Rampur Greyhound care in India: leads, heat and sitters

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

The Rampur Greyhound, or Rampur Hound, is an Indian sighthound that the Border Security Force now trains and parades. For a sitter, treat it as a fast chasing dog: a secure harness and lead on every walk, exercise only in the cool hours, a soft bed, and the owner's routine and food followed exactly.

There is no published breed standard, no ICAR-NBAGR registration and no measured study of the breed's size, health or temperament that Petym could find, so this page keeps to what is on record.

Where does the Rampur Greyhound come from?

The Rampur Hound comes from the princely state of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. The Tribune reported in 2025 that it was historically bred by the Nawabs for hunting jackals, and is known for its speed, stamina and fearlessness; an IANS report the same year says the Nawabs of Rampur bred it for hunting large game.

Little else about its development is on record. An ICAR-NBAGR paper from 2016 names the Rampur Hound among India's dog breeds, with the Caravan Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, Rajapalayam, Kanni and Mudhol Hound, but no study has measured it, and popular accounts of its ancestry and size cite no source.

How did the Rampur Greyhound come to India?

The Rampur Greyhound is a native Indian breed, but it is not on ICAR-NBAGR's register of Indian dog breeds, which lists six breeds, and we found no Kennel Club of India standard for it. Its revival has come through the security forces. PTI reported in October 2023 that trials of the Rampur Hound were under way at CRPF, SSB, ITBP and BSF training centres, and that it was likely to be deployed as a police dog.

The BSF trains Rampur and Mudhol Hounds at its National Training Centre for Dogs in Tekanpur and runs breeding programmes there and in its field units. It fielded a marching contingent of the two breeds at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade in October 2025, and The Tribune reported that over 150 Indian breed dogs are now deployed, a push that gained pace after the Prime Minister's visit to Tekanpur in January 2018.

What care does a Rampur Greyhound need?

The three things that shape a good day for this breed.

  • Exercise

No study measures it, but it is a sighthound bred for speed and stamina. Plan long walks in the cool hours on a well-fitted harness and lead, and let it sprint only inside a fully fenced space. The Tribune (Tribune News Service)news report

  • Grooming

No source describes its coat care. Check the coat, ears and toes for ticks after every walk, as ticks were found on more than half the dogs in a four-city Indian survey. Parasites & Vectors (2011)study

  • Training

The BSF's deputy inspector general described Rampur and Mudhol Hounds as intelligent and aggressive working dogs. Start socialisation early, reward calm behaviour, and do not rely on recall near roads. The Morung Express (IANS)news report

How much should a Rampur Greyhound eat?

Daily calories for a healthy, neutered adult Rampur Greyhound, worked out from its weight with the formula vets use (70 x weight in kg to the power 0.75, then AAHA's factor for a neutered adult). Divide by the kcal per kg on your food's pack for grams a day, and adjust by body shape.

Resting need (kcal a day)Neutered adult (kcal a day)
21 kg AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)690960 to 1100
30.5 kg9101270 to 1450
40 kg11101560 to 1780

No source sets a special diet for the Rampur Hound. Feed a complete and balanced dog food, or a home-cooked diet only if a vet nutritionist has formulated it: the Merck Veterinary Manual says nutrition problems come mostly from unbalanced home-made diets. Because no weight is published for the breed, weigh your own dog and ask your vet which row of the energy table fits, then adjust by body condition. Keep onion and garlic, grapes and raisins, tamarind, chocolate, salty snacks, xylitol, milk and cooked bones out of its bowl, and do not leave food out all day. Meals a day: 6 to 12 weeks, 4 a day; 3 to 6 months, 3 a day; 6 to 12 months, 2 a day; adult, 2 a day. Puppies, kittens, working, pregnant and older animals need different amounts: ask your vet, or use Petym's food calculator.

Which illnesses is the Rampur Greyhound prone to, and how are they treated?

The conditions veterinary studies and breed surveys most often report in the Rampur Greyhound. Knowing the early signs means a vet sees it sooner.

See your vet first. This is general information from veterinary sources, not a diagnosis. Only a vet who has examined your pet can say what is wrong and prescribe treatment, and this page never gives a dose. Do not give your pet human medicine. If your pet seems very unwell, go to a 24-hour vet: find one in your city.

  • Tick fever (ehrlichiosis)

    See a vet soon

No study links any disease to the Rampur Hound. Tick fever is a risk for every dog in India: ticks were found on 53% of 525 dogs in a four-city survey, and Ehrlichia canis is spread mainly by the brown dog tick. Parasites & Vectors (2011)study

    Signs to watch for

    • Fever and dullness
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nosebleeds, bruising or blood in the stool

    How a vet treats it

Merck says vets diagnose it with blood tests such as serology and PCR, and treat it with a course of antibiotics, with supportive care and sometimes a platelet or blood transfusion.

    Prevention

Tick control as your vet advises, and a tick check after every walk.

  • Heatstroke

Emergency: go to a vet now

No study has measured the breed's heat tolerance. Any dog that runs hard in Indian heat can overheat, and PDSA says heatstroke can progress very quickly. PDSA

    Signs to watch for

    • Heavy panting and fast breathing
    • Drooling, vomiting or diarrhoea
    • Very red or very pale gums
    • Weakness, confusion or collapse

    How a vet treats it

PDSA calls it an emergency: start cooling with cool, not icy, water and moving air, and go straight to the vet, who cools the dog further and may give a fluid drip, oxygen and medicines to protect the organs.

    Prevention

Exercise only in the early morning or evening, carry water, and follow AWBI's advice to protect animals from direct heat.

  • Leptospirosis

    See a vet soon

A bacterial infection caught from contaminated urine or water. It is not specific to the breed, but a dog that runs through puddles and fields in the monsoon is exposed, and it can spread to people. Merck Veterinary Manual

    Signs to watch for

    • Lethargy and poor appetite
    • Vomiting and dehydration
    • Changes in urination
    • Yellow gums, skin or eyes

    How a vet treats it

Merck says vets confirm it with specialised blood and urine tests and treat it in hospital with fluid therapy, antibiotics and supportive care for the kidneys and liver.

    Prevention

Merck says vaccination, usually yearly, protects against the common types. Wear gloves when cleaning up after a sick dog.

What does the record say about the Rampur Greyhound?

Very little that has been measured, and a growing amount about its work with India's forces.

The Rampur Hound appears in an ICAR-NBAGR paper from 2016 among India's dog breeds, alongside the Caravan Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, Rajapalayam, Kanni and Mudhol Hound. Unlike the Mudhol Hound, it has not been registered by NBAGR: the bureau's list of registered Indian dog breeds had six entries in October 2026, and the Rampur is not one of them. Petym also found no published standard from the Kennel Club of India, the FCI, The Royal Kennel Club or the AKC.

Its working life is better documented. A Press Trust of India report in October 2023 said trials of the Rampur Hound were under way at training centres of the CRPF, SSB, ITBP and BSF, and that Indian breeds were likely to be deployed as police dogs. In October 2025 the Press Information Bureau announced that the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade would feature a BSF contingent of Indian breed dogs, specifically Rampur Hounds and Mudhol Hounds.

Popular accounts of the breed's royal history, size and lifespan vary widely and cite no study. If you are buying a puppy, ask the breeder for parents you can meet and for vet records, rather than relying on a website's figures.

How a sitter handles a sighthound safely

Speed is the risk. Everything else follows from keeping the dog attached to its lead.

A sighthound hunts by sight and runs down what it sees. That means a cat across the lane or a kite on the ground can trigger a sprint, and a dog that comes back to its owner at home may not come back to a sitter on a busy road. The safest rule is a well-fitted harness, a strong lead looped round the wrist, and no off-lead running except in a fenced ground the owner already uses.

Petym's free meet and greet is the time to check the kit: the sitter should see the dog walked, try the harness on, and learn the words the family uses. In a flat, the danger points are the main door, the lift and the society gate. Agree that the dog is leashed before any door opens and that guests are met outside.

A slim, short-coated dog also feels hard floors and cold more than a Labrador. Leave its bed, blanket and any winter coat with the sitter, especially in North Indian winters, and note where it likes to sleep.

A safe walk with a Rampur Hound, stop by stop

A sample route plan a sitter can follow. Change the details to fit your colony.

  1. At the door

Harness on and lead clipped before the door opens. Check for cats or dogs in the corridor first.

  2. Lift and lobby

Wait for an empty lift. Keep the dog close on a short lead past the guard cabin and parked bikes.

  3. Road and pavement

Test the surface with the back of a hand for seven seconds in summer; if it is too hot to hold, walk on grass or wait. The Royal Kennel Club

  4. The park

Stay on the lead unless the ground is fully fenced and the owner has said running there is fine. Watch for squirrels, cats and kites.

  5. Coming home

Check paws for cuts and the ears, neck and toes for ticks, then water and rest. Merck Veterinary Manual

Health signs to report for a Rampur Greyhound

No study covers the breed's health. These are the problems a sitter can spot in any lean, fast dog in India.

  • If Heavy panting, drooling, a fast heartbeat or collapse after exercise in the heat.

Heatstroke: move it somewhere cool, pour cool water over it, use a fan and go to the vet at once. Animal Welfare Board of India

  • If Fever, tiredness or pale gums in a dog that had ticks. In a survey of 525 dogs in four Indian cities, about half carried a tick-borne infection.

Call the vet the same day. Parasites & Vectors (2011)study

  • If A limp, a torn nail or a cut after a sprint.

Rest the dog, send the owner a photo, and call the vet if it bleeds, swells or the dog will not bear weight.

  • If Scrapes or sores on the elbows and hips from lying on hard floors.

Give a thick bed or folded blanket and tell the owner.

  • If Vomiting, diarrhoea or refusing food for more than a day.

Call the vet and keep the food exactly as the owner left it. PDSA

Meals and comfort for a Rampur Hound

No source describes a special diet. Consistency is what protects the dog's stomach while you are away.

Do

  • Leave the exact food, measured portions and meal times in writing, and ask the sitter to log every meal in the daily update.
  • Stick to that food for the whole stay; PDSA notes that a sudden change can upset the gut. PDSA
  • Measure treats so they stay under about 10% of daily calories. WSAVA
  • Rest the dog after meals and feed after walks, not just before a run.
  • Keep a thick bed off the floor, and a blanket ready for December and January in the north.

Don’t

  • Do not share rotis with ghee and onion, dal tadka, sweets or grapes: onion, garlic, grapes, raisins and xylitol are all toxic to dogs. ASPCA Animal Poison Control
  • Do not leave the dog in a car, on a terrace or on a balcony in the afternoon sun.
  • Do not change the walking route for an unfamiliar one on the first days.

Questions owners ask

Is the Rampur Greyhound a recognised breed?

It is named among Indian dog breeds in a 2016 ICAR-NBAGR paper, but it is not on NBAGR's register of Indian dog breeds. Petym found no published standard from the Kennel Club of India, the FCI, The Royal Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club as of October 2026.

Does the BSF use Rampur Hounds?

Yes. The Press Information Bureau announced that the BSF would field a marching contingent of Indian breed dogs, specifically Rampur Hounds and Mudhol Hounds, at the 2025 Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, describing them as force multipliers in operations.

Can a Rampur Greyhound be let off the lead?

Only in a fully fenced space. It is a sighthound, a dog that chases what it sees, and a sprint after a cat or squirrel can take it into traffic. A sitter should use a well-fitted harness and lead on every walk outside a secure fence.

How long can a Rampur Greyhound be left alone?

There is no study of the breed. PDSA's general guidance is that dogs should not be left alone for more than four hours at a time. On longer days, a midday walk or a sitter keeps the dog exercised and less likely to bark or chew.

Does a Rampur Greyhound cope with Indian summers?

No study has measured it. It is an Indian breed, and Mann Ki Baat in 2020 described Indian breeds as better adapted to the Indian environment, but any dog can get heatstroke after running in the heat. Walk early and late, and keep water and shade available.

What size is a Rampur Greyhound?

Petym found no published measurements of the breed, and online figures vary and cite no study. Ask your breeder about the parents and your vet about your dog's healthy adult weight, and give the sitter that figure for food and any medicines.

What should a sitter feed a Rampur Greyhound?

Exactly what you feed at home, at the same times, written down with portions. No source sets a special diet for the breed. Keep onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate and xylitol out of reach, and feed after walks rather than just before a run.
