How much should I feed my cat?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Work out your cat's resting energy need as 70 x its weight in kg to the power 0.75, then multiply by its life-stage factor: 1.2 to 1.4 for a neutered adult and 2.5 for a kitten, AAHA advises. Divide by the kcal per kg on the pack for grams a day, and recheck its shape every two weeks.

How does the cat food calculator work?

It takes your cat's resting energy need, multiplies it by a factor for its life stage, then divides by the energy in the food.

The resting energy requirement (RER) is what a cat burns at rest. The 2021 AAHA Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines use the same formula for cats as for dogs: 70 x body weight in kg to the power 0.75. The Merck Veterinary Manual says this exponential formula can be used at any body weight, while the simpler 30 x kg + 70 is only for animals between 2 and 45 kg, which rules it out for kittens and cats under 2 kg.

The maintenance energy requirement (MER) is the RER times a life-stage factor. AAHA gives ranges, shown below. Merck's table gives single values: 1.2 for a neutered adult, 1.4 for an intact adult, 1.0 for an obesity-prone adult and 2.5 for a kitten, which may also be fed free choice. Merck's values sit at the low end of AAHA's ranges, a useful hint that most indoor cats need less than owners expect.

AAHA adds that sedentary or indoor pets may need fewer calories than these factors suggest. A cat that lives in a flat and sleeps most of the day is that cat.

What does the result look like for a typical cat?

Petym’s working from the official rules, no government publishes a total.

Petym's own working from the AAHA formula, rounded to the nearest kcal. It shows the arithmetic, not what your cat needs.

Resting need (RER)Neutered adult (x 1.2 to 1.4)Intact adult (x 1.4 to 1.6)
3 kg cat AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)160 kcal191 to 223 kcal223 to 255 kcal
4 kg cat AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)198 kcal238 to 277 kcal277 to 317 kcal
5.5 kg cat AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)251 kcal302 to 352 kcal352 to 402 kcal

For grams: a 4 kg neutered cat at 238 to 277 kcal, on a dry food whose pack says 3,500 kcal per kg, would start at about 68 to 79 g a day. The 3,500 is only an example: use the figure on your own pack.

How do I work out grams of dry and wet food?

The same sum for both, done separately for each food, then the two added up.

  • Weigh your cat on a kitchen or vet scale. Use its current weight unless your vet gives you an ideal one. WSAVA
  • Let the calculator give you a daily calorie range from AAHA's formula and factor. AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)
  • Find the calorie statement on each pack: kcal per kg, and often per pouch or can. Merck notes it is metabolisable energy, as fed. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Grams a day = kcal a day divided by (kcal per kg divided by 1,000). If you feed both wet and dry, give each a share of the calories first. WSAVA
  • Keep treats under about 10% of the calories (WSAVA); Cornell gives 10 to 15%. WSAVA
  • Weigh again in two weeks and adjust; WSAVA says to keep adjusting until the cat holds an ideal body condition. WSAVA

How should I read the result?

As a first guess that you correct by your cat's weight and shape.

WSAVA's Global Nutrition Committee says individual cats can need up to 50% more or less than any starting estimate; Merck says as much as 30% either way. So the calculator gives a range. Start in the middle for a typical neutered indoor cat, and nearer the bottom if it is already round.

The check is the body condition score, on WSAVA's 9-point scale: 4 to 5 out of 9 is ideal, under 4 underweight and over 5 overweight. Your vet can teach you to score your cat by feel and by eye. Cornell's Feline Health Center calls obesity the most common nutrition-related problem in cats and links it to arthritis and diabetes, so ask your vet what your cat's ideal weight is and feed for that.

The feeding guide on the pack is a fair starting point too, WSAVA says. If its figure and the calculator's are far apart, use the lower and watch the body condition score.

What is different about feeding a cat?

Cats are not small dogs: they need animal-based food and they drink little.

Do

  • Feed a complete cat food. Cornell describes cats as obligate carnivores that rely on nutrients found only in animal products. Cornell Feline Health Center
  • Keep clean, fresh water out at all times. Canned food is at least 75% moisture, Cornell notes, a good extra source of water. Cornell Feline Health Center
  • Use small, frequent meals, food toys or several bowls: WSAVA says cats graze and eat small amounts through the day and night. WSAVA
  • When changing foods, go slowly over at least 3 days with the new food in a separate bowl, as many cats refuse a mixed bowl (WSAVA). WSAVA

Don’t

  • Do not feed dog food as the diet. Merck says dog foods are generally not satisfactory for cats. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Do not give milk or curd as a treat. Many cats are lactose intolerant, Cornell warns, and can get stomach upsets from dairy. Cornell Feline Health Center
  • Do not free-feed a cat that is gaining weight. WSAVA says leaving food out only suits pets that hold an ideal weight by themselves. WSAVA

When should a vet set the amount instead?

  • If Your cat has stopped eating or is eating much less

WSAVA says a pet not eating enough to hold its weight needs a vet as soon as possible. Do not force-feed: it can cause food aversion. WSAVA

  • If Pregnant or nursing

AAHA's factors rise to 1.6 to 2.0 in pregnancy and 2.0 to 6.0 in lactation, by litter size and week. Your vet works this out. AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)

  • If Overweight and needs to lose weight

AAHA's weight-loss factor is 0.8, but it is applied to the ideal weight with your vet watching. Merck warns that cutting a normal food too far can leave a pet short of nutrients. Merck Veterinary Manual

What about Indian packs, home food and a sitter?

Count every source of calories and keep the plan the same while you are away.

WSAVA notes that calorie information is only required on pet food labels in the United States. Look for it on your pack anyway; if it is missing, WSAVA's advice is to contact the manufacturer, who should be able to give it or work it out from the analysis. Without it the calculator cannot give grams, so follow the pack's feeding guide and your vet.

In many Indian homes a cat gets bits of boiled fish or chicken from the family's meal. Plain cooked meat or fish counts as a treat in the 10% share; anything cooked with onion or garlic should not be shared at all, as WSAVA lists both among foods toxic to pets. A full home-cooked diet needs a recipe from a veterinary nutritionist, as Merck advises, because cats need nutrients that are easy to miss.

If a sitter or a drop-in visitor is feeding your cat while you travel, write down the grams of each food, the meal times and the treat limit on the care sheet. Ask them to tell you at once if your cat eats much less than usual: WSAVA says a pet not eating enough to hold its weight needs a vet as soon as possible.

Questions owners ask

How many calories does a cat need a day?

Start with 70 x weight in kg to the power 0.75, then multiply by AAHA's factor: 1.2 to 1.4 for a neutered adult, 1.4 to 1.6 for an intact one. A 4 kg neutered cat works out at about 238 to 277 kcal a day. Adjust from there by body condition.

How many grams of dry food should I feed my cat?

Divide the daily calories by the food's kcal per kg, then multiply by 1,000. Take the kcal figure from the pack's calorie statement, or ask the maker if it is missing. If you also feed wet food, subtract its calories first. Recheck weight and shape after two weeks.

How much should I feed a kitten?

AAHA's factor for a growing kitten is 2.5 x the resting energy need, and Merck notes kittens can also be fed free choice. Use a food labelled for growth or all life stages, weigh the kitten often, and ask your vet at each vaccination visit.

Can I give my cat milk or curd?

It is better not to. Cornell's Feline Health Center says many cats are lactose intolerant and can develop stomach and bowel problems from dairy. Fresh water is what a cat needs to drink, and wet food adds more water.

Why is my indoor cat getting fat on the amount the calculator gives?

Because the formula is an average. WSAVA says real needs vary by up to 50% either way, and AAHA notes that indoor or sedentary pets often need less. Feed towards the lower end, count the treats, recheck in two weeks and ask your vet to score its body condition.

Can my cat eat dog food if it runs out?

Not as its diet. Merck says dog foods are generally not satisfactory for cats, because some are lower in protein and may lack nutrients cats need, such as taurine. A missed meal is better replaced with the cat's own food as soon as you can buy it.
