Dog walking

Dog walking with a walker from your neighbourhood

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Dog walking on Petym means a local walker collects your dog from your door for a 30 or 60 minute one-to-one walk, never in a pack, and brings it home again. Walks follow your route, lead and lift rules, are kept to the cooler hours, and every day of a booking ends with a photo update.

It suits owners who work long hours, dogs with more energy than their family has time for, and any dog that needs a break in the day: PDSA and the RSPCA say adult dogs should not be left alone for more than about four hours. Petym is not taking bookings yet.

What’s included

  • A 30 or 60 minute walk, collected from your doorThe walker comes to your flat, puts on the lead or harness inside, and brings your dog back to the same door. Time on the walk starts at the gate, not in the lift.
  • One-to-one walks, never a packEvery walk is your dog and the walker only. Two dogs from the same home can walk together if they walk calmly side by side; no other dogs join.
  • Walks at the times you set, kept to the cool hoursEarly morning and evening in summer, avoiding the hottest part of the day, and the road tested with the back of the hand before a long walk. PDSA
  • Your dog on a lead in the society and on the roadLeashed in lifts, corridors and common areas as the AWBI guidelines ask, and on a lead no longer than six feet in parks. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Poop picked up, every timeBags carried on every walk and waste put in a bin, in the society compound, on the pavement and in the park. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Toilet first, then the walkA walk starts with the toilet spot your dog uses, so a dog that has waited since morning is not rushed. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Water on hot daysA bottle and bowl in summer, a pause in the shade, and fresh water at home when the walk ends. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Paws wiped and a quick tick check after the walkMud and rain wiped off in the monsoon, and the ears, neck and between the toes checked for ticks. A tick found is reported to you. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • A daily photo updateEvery day of the booking: photos, walk times and length, toilet, and anything you should know, such as a limp, a tick or a dog that would not settle.
  • Your rules keptThe route, which dogs to avoid, whether your dog may greet others, treats or none, and how it is handed back. Write them on the care sheet.

What’s not included

  • Off-lead running in public places Dogs stay on the lead in common areas and parks. Off-lead play happens only in a fenced space you have agreed, with a dog whose recall you trust.
  • Training A walker keeps the commands and lead manners you already use. Teaching loose-lead walking or recall is a job for a trainer and you.
  • Vet treatment decisions The walker does not diagnose or treat. If your dog is hurt or unwell, they call you, and in an emergency take your dog to the nearest 24-hour vet on Petym's list.
  • Medicines and injections, unless agreed A walk is not a care visit. If your dog needs a tablet at walk time, agree it and write it on the care sheet; injections need a trained sitter, agreed before you book.
  • Baths and grooming Paws and belly wiped after a muddy walk, yes. A bath, a brush-out or nail clipping, no.

What happens on a 30 minute walk?

A typical solo walk for an adult dog in a city society. A 60 minute walk adds a longer route, a park or a quiet lane for sniffing, and a rest in the shade.

Who is dog walking for?

Dogs that need more walking or a break in the day, and owners who cannot always be there.

  • You work long hours and your dog would otherwise be alone for most of the day.
  • Your dog has more energy than one short walk a day uses up.
  • You cannot manage the early morning walk, or the evening one after a late day.
  • You are ill, injured, pregnant or have a new baby, and need help for a few weeks.
  • Your older dog needs short, gentle outings more often rather than one long walk.
  • You want your dog walked on its own, never in a pack of other dogs.

  1. PAN identity check. Identity verified with PAN before listing.
  2. Home walk-through. A video walk-through of the home by Petym, for sitters who host pets.

Trust and safety in full, including what happens if your pet falls ill.

What should you prepare?

  • Write the care sheet: walk times, route, toilet spot, dogs and places to avoid, treats allowed, and how your dog behaves on the lead.
  • Book the free meet and greet and do a short walk together, so the walker sees how your dog handles the lift, the gate and the road. RSPCA (England and Wales)
  • Leave a well-fitting collar with an ID tag, or a harness your dog cannot back out of.
  • Keep the microchip details up to date, in case your dog slips the lead. PDSA
  • Leave a fixed-length lead, poop bags, a towel by the door and a water bottle and bowl.
  • Tell the society office and the gate guard the walker's name and walk times, and add them to your visitor app.
  • Hand over a key or lock code, and leave a spare with a neighbour you trust.
  • Write down your vet's name and number and save it in the walker's phone. PDSA
  • Add an emergency contact nearby who can take your dog in if you cannot be reached.
  • Tell the walker about health limits from your vet: hip or joint problems, heart conditions, a flat-faced breed's breathing.
  • Keep vaccinations, tick prevention and deworming up to date, and leave the vaccination card with DHPPi and rabies dates.
  • If your dog is new to a walker, start with 30-minute walks and build up as it settles.

Put it all on one page: make a free pet care sheet for your sitter.

How much walking does your dog need?

Petym’s working from the official rules, no government publishes a total.

PDSA says every dog needs at least one walk a day, and how much more depends on breed, age, health and temperament. This is Petym's working from that advice; ask your vet for your own dog.

Which walk should you book for your dog?

Every Petym walk is one-to-one. Choose the length and how often by your dog's age and energy.

  • Toilet break

    One-to-one, 30 minutes

A toilet break and a short walk. Suits puppies, flat-faced breeds, older dogs and a midday break on a working day.

  • Full walk

    One-to-one, 60 minutes

A longer route with time to sniff. Suits energetic dogs, reactive or nervous dogs, and dogs that pull or chase.

  • Monthly

    Twice a day, every month

A month of 52 one-to-one walks, morning and evening. Suits energetic breeds and dogs alone through a working day.

  • All day

    Doggy day care instead

If your dog would still be alone for most of the day after a walk, day care in a sitter's home may suit it better.

Is a walker enough, or does your dog need more?

A walk breaks up the day. It does not replace company for a dog that is alone from morning to night.

  1. If You are out for a normal working day

One midday walk breaks the time alone into shorter stretches. Adult dogs should not be alone for more than about four hours at a time. How long can a dog be left alone? PDSA

  2. If Your dog barks, howls or chews at the door when alone

A walk helps, but the dog may need company for most of the day. Day care or a sitter may suit it better; talk to your vet about the anxiety. Separation anxiety in dogs RSPCA (England and Wales)

  3. If You are away overnight

A walker cannot cover the night. Book overnight pet sitting or home boarding. Overnight sitting

  4. If Your dog reacts to other dogs

Book solo walks only, on quiet routes and at quiet times, and tell the walker the dog's triggers. Reactive dog

  5. If You cannot decide between a walker and day care

Compare the two side by side. Dog walker or doggy day care?

What are the rules for walking dogs in Indian societies and parks?

The Animal Welfare Board of India's guidelines protect a dog's right to be walked and ask walkers to keep dogs leashed and clean up (checked 21 October 2026).

AWBI's guidelines for residents' welfare and apartment owners' associations, of 26 February 2015, say a society cannot ban pet dogs, cannot stop pets using the lifts and cannot charge for it. They advise that dogs be leashed in all common areas, say associations cannot insist on muzzles, and ask owners, care-givers and dog walkers to clean up after the dog. Where a society has more than one working lift, owners are advised not to object to using an alternate one.

AWBI's guidelines on pet dogs in public parks, of 15 November 2016, say leashed dogs walked by adults should not be banned from parks. Parks may set reasonable morning and evening timings for dogs, which can change with the season, and dogs must be on a lead no longer than six feet. Park authorities cannot insist on muzzles, but owners who think their dog needs one are advised to use it.

AWBI's circular of 1 June 2020 adds that pets have small bladders and need walks for their physical and mental health, and that neglecting to exercise a dog kept chained or closely confined is an offence under section 11(1)(g) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

  • Use the lift your society asks dog walkers to use, if there are two.
  • Keep your dog close and short on the lead in corridors and lifts, especially near children.
  • Pick up every time, including on the lawn inside the society.
  • Walk in the park at the timings it sets for dogs, if it has them.

How does a walker adjust for heat, the monsoon, ticks and Diwali?

Walk times and routes change with the season. The aim is the same walk, at a safer hour.

In summer, walks move to early morning and after sunset. PDSA advises avoiding the hottest part of the day and testing the ground: if you cannot comfortably hold the palm of your hand on it for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws. Asphalt, sand and artificial grass get especially hot. Obese, flat-faced, young, old, giant-breed and long-haired dogs are most at risk of heatstroke. At the first heavy panting, drooling or wobbling, the walker stops in the shade, cools the dog and calls you.

In the monsoon, walks are shorter and fitted between showers. The walker avoids waterlogged lanes and puddles where possible, because dogs catch leptospirosis through contact with contaminated urine or water, and dries the paws and belly at home. After every walk, the walker checks the head, neck, ears and toes and tells you about any tick, which should be removed as soon as possible.

Around Diwali and New Year, the evening walk happens while it is still light and the dog is home before the crackers start. PDSA warns never to let a dog out alone during fireworks. A frightened dog can slip a collar, so the walker uses a harness and a short lead on those days.

Community dogs are part of most Indian walks. The walker keeps your dog moving past their spots, avoids feeding points at feeding times, and turns back calmly rather than letting dogs meet nose to nose.

What does a walker do if something goes wrong on a walk?

In an emergency the walker calls you and takes your dog to the nearest 24-hour vet on Petym's list for your city.

  • If Heavy panting, drooling, wobbling or collapse in the heat

Stop, move into shade or indoors, pour cool water over the body away from the nose and mouth, and go to the vet. PDSA

  • If A cut paw from glass or a hot surface

Stop the walk, keep the dog off the paw where possible, wrap it, and call you. Bleeding that will not stop is an emergency. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Your dog eats something off the road

Take a photo of what is left, tell you, and go to the vet if it could be poison, bones or a human medicine. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If A fight with another dog, or a bite

Separate safely without reaching between the dogs, check for wounds and go to the vet.

  • If Your dog slips its collar and runs

Do not chase into traffic. Call the dog calmly, alert the guard and nearby shops, and call you at once.

  • If Limping or a sudden refusal to walk

Walk home slowly or carry a small dog, and tell you. Suspected broken bones need a vet straight away. Merck Veterinary Manual

What do the welfare sources say about walks?

  • 1 walk a day

PDSA's minimum for every dog unless your vet advises otherwise. Many dogs need more. PDSA

  • 4 hours

The most an adult dog should be left alone at a time, according to PDSA and the RSPCA. PDSA

  • 7 seconds

PDSA's palm test: if you cannot hold your hand on the ground this long, it is too hot to walk. PDSA

  • 6 feet

The longest lead AWBI's park guidelines allow for dogs in public parks. Animal Welfare Board of India

What makes a good walk for a city dog?

Do

  • Keep your dog on a lead in all common areas. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Pick up and bin every poop.
  • Let your dog sniff: a slow, sniffy walk tires a dog as well as a fast one.
  • Walk in the coolest hours and carry water in summer. PDSA
  • Bring in any change to your dog's exercise gradually. PDSA

Don’t

  • Do not walk on asphalt you cannot hold your palm on for seven seconds. PDSA
  • Do not let your dog greet unknown dogs or community dogs nose to nose.
  • Do not use a long retractable lead next to traffic or in a lift.
  • Do not walk during fireworks or colour play on Diwali and Holi. PDSA
  • Do not walk through floodwater or deep puddles if you can avoid it. Merck Veterinary Manual

Questions owners ask

How long is a dog walk on Petym?

Walks are 30 or 60 minutes, counted from when your dog leaves the society gate. A 30 minute walk suits a toilet break, puppies, flat-faced breeds and older dogs. A 60 minute walk suits energetic dogs that need a longer route, time to sniff and a rest in the shade.

Will my dog walk with other dogs?

No. Every Petym walk is one-to-one, your dog and the walker only, never a pack, which suits nervous, reactive or energetic dogs and any dog new to a walker. Two dogs from the same home can walk together, and that is the most on any walk.

How often should my dog be walked?

PDSA says every dog needs at least one walk a day unless your vet advises otherwise, and many need more. How much depends on breed, age, health and temperament. Energetic breeds such as Labradors, Beagles and German Shepherds usually need two good walks; flat-faced and older dogs do better with short, frequent ones.

Is it safe to walk my dog in an Indian summer?

Yes, at the right hours. Walk in the early morning and after sunset, avoid the hottest part of the day and test the road: if you cannot hold your palm on it for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws. Flat-faced, overweight, old and long-haired dogs are most at risk of heatstroke.

Can my housing society stop a dog walker using the lift?

AWBI's 2015 guidelines say residents' and apartment owners' associations cannot stop pets using the lifts or charge for it. Dogs should be leashed in all common areas, and walkers should clean up after the dog. Where there are two working lifts, owners are advised not to object to using an alternate one.

Will the walker let my dog off the lead?

Not in public places. AWBI's guidelines ask for dogs to be leashed in common areas, and on a lead no longer than six feet in parks. Off-lead play happens only in a fenced space you have agreed in writing, and only for a dog whose recall you trust.

What happens if my dog is hurt on a walk?

The walker calls you, and in an emergency takes your dog to the nearest 24-hour vet on Petym's list for your city. Every Petym walker does pet first-aid training before the first booking. Leave your vet's number, an emergency contact and the vaccination card where the walker can find them.

Can a dog walker help with separation anxiety?

A walk breaks up the day and can help, but it does not replace company. Adult dogs should not be left alone for more than about four hours at a time. If your dog barks, howls, chews at doors or toilets indoors when alone, ask your vet, and consider day care or a sitter.

How does a walker handle community dogs on the road?

The walker keeps your dog on a short lead, moves steadily past known spots, avoids feeding points at feeding times and turns back calmly instead of letting dogs meet nose to nose. Tell the walker which lanes and dogs your own dog reacts to, so the route can avoid them.

How much does dog walking cost on Petym?

A 30-minute one-to-one walk is Rs 349 in Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru and Rs 279 in other cities; 60 minutes is Rs 599 or Rs 479. A month of 26 half-hour walks is Rs 7,999 or Rs 6,299, and of 52, twice a day, Rs 14,999 or Rs 11,999. A second dog from your home adds half the price again.

Should my puppy go on walks with a walker?

Ask your vet first when your puppy can walk outside safely, based on its vaccination course. Then start with short walks, as growing joints tire quickly. Petym walks are one-to-one, so your puppy does not walk with other dogs while it is still settling on the lead.

Going away soon? Tell us your dates.
