Dog walker or doggy day care: which suits your dog?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

A dog walker breaks up a day alone with a walk in your dog's own neighbourhood; doggy day care keeps your dog in company all day, often with other dogs. PDSA says dogs should not be left alone for more than 4 hours, so the choice depends on your hours and how your dog copes with other dogs.

Day care means more contact with other dogs, and infections such as kennel cough spread where dogs gather. A walk keeps contact low but leaves your dog alone for the rest of the day.

What problem are you trying to solve?

Both services exist for the same reason: a dog left alone too long on a working day.

PDSA's guidance is that dogs should not be left alone for more than 4 hours at a time, and that if you will be out for longer you should consider a pet sitter or dog walker. An Indian office day with a commute is often ten hours or more. Something has to fill the gap.

A walker fills it with one or two outings. Your dog stays in its own home, sees its own streets and comes back to its own bed, but is alone before and after. Day care fills the whole day with company, and often with other dogs, but it means a journey, a different place and, usually, new animals. Which one is right depends less on the services than on your dog.

The Animal Welfare Board of India makes the underlying point in a 2020 circular: pets need regular chances to relieve themselves and some exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy, and neglecting to exercise a dog kept in close confinement can be cruelty under Section 11(1)(g) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Which suits which dog?

A starting point. Your vet, and how your own dog behaves around other dogs, decide.

What is the infection risk at day care?

Wherever many dogs share a space, some infections spread more easily. The Merck Veterinary Manual says kennel cough spreads where dogs are kept close together, including boarding, day care, kennels and vet hospitals. A vaccine reduces the risk of severe illness but does not stop infection.

A US study adds a warning for the monsoon. During an outbreak of canine leptospirosis in Maricopa County, Arizona, dogs with the disease were about 7.7 times as likely as healthy dogs to have visited dog day care, while dog park visits were not significantly linked once other factors were accounted for. It is a single outbreak study from the US, not Indian data, but its authors concluded that transmission where dogs congregated likely spread the outbreak, and that this exposure should be considered in leptospirosis vaccine decisions. Ask your vet whether your dog's vaccines suit day care.

None of this makes day care unsafe by type. It means asking every provider about vaccination and tick and flea policies, how they keep sick dogs away, and how many dogs share a space.

What should you ask a walker or a day care provider?

Questions that work for either, with the Indian details that matter.

  • Which vaccinations, and tick and flea prevention, do you require of every dog, and do you check the vaccination card? Merck Veterinary Manual
  • How many dogs do you walk or look after at once, and how are they grouped?
  • What do you do in the heat? Walks should be early or late, and the road tested with a palm for 7 seconds. PDSA
  • Do you keep dogs leashed in common areas and clean up after them, as the AWBI's 2015 guidelines ask of owners and their dog walkers? Animal Welfare Board of India
  • For day care in a home: has the housing society agreed, and how many dogs does the home take at once?
  • What happens if my dog is hurt, ill or gets into a fight, and which 24-hour vet would you use?
  • Can we do a trial walk or a short trial day first?
  • How will you tell me how the day went?

How can you tell your dog is not coping?

Watch the first few walks or day care days closely, and ask the carer what they saw.

  • If A low body posture, raised hackles, yawning, lip licking or trying to get away from other dogs

These are signs of fear, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. Ask for a quieter group, a solo walk, or stop group day care and talk to your vet. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If A cough, nasal discharge or tiredness after day care

Kennel cough spreads where dogs gather. Keep your dog home, tell the provider and call your vet. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Heavy panting, drooling or weakness after a walk on a hot day

Possible heat stress: move to a cool place, cool with water and call your vet. Change walk times at once. PDSA

  • If Still barking, soiling or destroying things at home on walker days

One walk may not be enough. PDSA lists these among signs of separation-related problems; talk to your vet or a behaviourist. PDSA

How will Petym's walking and day care work?

Petym is not taking bookings yet. When it opens in a city, dog walking will be with a local sitter, and doggy day care will be in a sitter's home. Every sitter will have their identity verified with PAN, pet first-aid training before their first booking and a named 24-hour vet within reach. Sitters who host dogs for day care will also have had a video walk-through of their home by Petym, the housing society's permission for paid pet sitting, and a pet limit set for the home.

Both start with a free meet and greet before the first booking. The sitter follows your dog's plan as you write it, logs walks and meals as they happen and sends a photo update every day. In an emergency the sitter calls you and takes your dog to the nearest 24-hour vet on the city's list.

Questions owners ask

Is doggy day care better than a dog walker?

Neither is better for every dog. Day care gives company all day, which suits social dogs and dogs that should not be alone, but brings more contact with other dogs. A walker suits calm, older or shy dogs, but leaves them alone between walks. It depends on your dog and your hours.

How long can a dog be left alone while I am at work?

PDSA says dogs should not be left alone for more than 4 hours at a time, and suggests a pet sitter or dog walker if you will be out longer. For a full Indian working day with a commute, plan two breaks, or day care.

Can my dog catch kennel cough at day care?

It can. The Merck Veterinary Manual says kennel cough spreads where dogs are kept close together, including day care, boarding and kennels. A vaccine reduces the risk of severe illness but does not stop infection. Keep a coughing dog at home and call your vet.

Is day care good for a dog with separation anxiety?

It can help. The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs with separation anxiety should be left alone as rarely as possible, and that day care or dog sitters can be beneficial. Treatment is led by a vet or behaviourist, so talk to your vet as well.

Are group dog walks a good idea?

For some dogs. Group walks mean more contact with other dogs and more leashes for one walker to manage, and nervous or reactive dogs often do better alone. The AWBI's 2015 guidelines ask that dogs are leashed in common areas and that walkers clean up after them.

What should a dog walker do in summer?

Walk early in the morning or in the evening, test the road with a palm for 7 seconds before setting out, carry water, and skip walks for flat-faced, old, overweight or unwell dogs on hot days, as PDSA advises. The walk times belong in your dog's written plan.

Can someone run doggy day care from a flat?

Only with care and permission. Petym will require every sitter to have the housing society's permission for paid pet sitting, a video walk-through of the home and a pet limit for it. The AWBI's guidelines on pets in societies cover residents' own pets, not paid services.
