Drop-in visits or overnight sitting: which does your pet need?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Drop-in visits suit most healthy adult cats: Cats Protection suggests someone visits at least twice a day. Overnight sitting suits most dogs, because PDSA says dogs should not be left alone for more than 4 hours, and any pet that needs company, night-time medicines or close watching. Which is right depends on your pet.

Both keep your pet at home in its own territory and routine, which the RSPCA says is usually best. The difference is how many hours your pet spends alone.

What is the real difference between the two?

Both keep your pet at home. The difference is how long it spends alone, and whether anyone is there at night.

The RSPCA's advice to owners going away is that having someone look after a pet in its own home is usually best, and that someone who stays in the home usually works best. Cats Protection goes further for cats: keeping a cat at home is the safest and least unsettling option. Both drop-in visits and overnight sitting do that. Neither involves a journey, a carrier, a new place or other people's animals.

What changes is company. With visits, your pet is alone between them, and alone all night. With overnight sitting, someone is there for most of the day and every night, keeping the walks, meals and bedtime close to normal. For a confident adult cat, the visits may be all it needs. For most dogs, and for pets that are young, old, unwell or anxious, the hours alone are the problem.

Which suits which pet?

A starting point, not a rule. Your vet and your knowledge of your own pet decide.

What should a good drop-in visit cover?

Cats Protection's list of what a sitter should do and what to leave them, with the visit habits that matter.

  • Fresh food and water, as your plan says, and a check that the cat is well fed and safe. Cats Protection
  • Litter cleaned at every visit, and a note of anything unusual in the tray.
  • Regular play. Cats Protection advises keeping string-like toys such as feather teasers out of reach afterwards, so the cat cannot get tangled. Cats Protection
  • Medicines given at the times your plan sets, and logged. Cats Protection
  • Doors and windows checked and locked on the way out, and the door tested with the sitter before you leave. Cats Protection
  • Enough food, litter and medicine left for the whole trip, with written daily instructions and your vet's details. Cats Protection
  • A look at the cat itself, not just the bowl: is it eating, using the tray, coming out to greet the sitter? Stressed cats often hide more and eat less. International Cat Care

What does overnight sitting add?

Time. A dog's day is built around its people: walks morning and evening, meals, company in the afternoon, a last toilet break at night. Overnight sitting keeps that shape, so the dog is not alone for most of the day. PDSA's guidance is that dogs should not be left alone for more than 4 hours at a time, and suggests a pet sitter or dog walker if you will be out for longer.

It also covers the night. Merck notes that dogs with separation distress often start showing signs within 15 to 30 minutes of being left: distress barking, house soiling, drooling, pacing and destruction near doors. For those dogs a sitter who stays is not a luxury. For an old pet, or one recovering from illness, someone in the home overnight can notice a problem hours earlier than a morning visit would.

And it changes the home. A lived-in flat has lights on, a fan running, and someone to hear the doorbell, take in a delivery or notice a leak. Those are not the reason to choose a sitter, but in an Indian city, with power cuts, water motors and a society gate to manage, they help.

    What the sources say

It suits any pet that would otherwise be alone for long hours, including most dogs, puppies and pets on medicines at night. Anxious dogs need it most: Merck says they should be left alone as rarely as possible. Merck Veterinary Manual

What should you ask before booking either?

  • How many visits a day, at what times, and how long each will be; or, for overnight sitting, what hours the sitter will be out.
  • Has the sitter given your pet's kind of medicine before? Cats Protection advises checking experience with medicines or special care.
  • Can you meet at home with your pet first, ideally several days before you leave?
  • Who is the backup if the sitter falls ill?
  • How will you hear how your pet is, and how often?
  • What will the sitter do in an emergency, and which 24-hour vet would they use?

Which to pick when

How will Petym handle both?

Petym is not taking bookings yet; it opens city by city once its sitters have passed its checks. When it does, both drop-in visits and overnight sitting will start with a free meet and greet with the sitter before the first booking. You will book and pay through Petym, and the sitter is paid after the booking.

Either way, the sitter follows your pet's plan as you write it, logs feeding, walks and medicines as they happen, and sends a photo update every day. In an emergency the sitter calls you and takes your pet to the nearest 24-hour vet on the city's list. Every sitter will have had pet first-aid training before their first booking and their identity verified with PAN.

Questions owners ask

How many times a day should a sitter visit a cat?

At least twice a day, according to Cats Protection, and more often for very young or old cats or those with health conditions. Each visit should cover food, fresh water, the litter tray, play and a look at the cat itself, and any medicines at the set times.

Can drop-in visits work for a dog?

Only for short gaps. PDSA says dogs should not be left alone for more than 4 hours at a time, so two or three visits a day still leave long stretches and the whole night alone. For a trip away, most dogs do better with a sitter who stays overnight.

Does an overnight pet sitter stay all day?

Not always. An overnight sitter stays the night and looks after your pet through the day, but may go out for some hours. Agree the hours in advance and write them into your pet's plan, so your dog is never alone for longer than it can cope with.

Is overnight sitting better for an anxious dog?

Usually. The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs with separation anxiety should be left alone as rarely as possible and that dog sitters or day care can help. Talk to your vet too, since treatment for separation anxiety is led by a vet or behaviourist.

Do I need an overnight sitter for a senior cat?

Not always, but it can help. Cats Protection says old cats and cats with health conditions may need more frequent visits than a healthy adult cat. If your cat takes medicine at night or has a condition that can change quickly, someone staying overnight may be the simpler choice.

What is the difference between drop-in visits and overnight pet sitting?

With drop-in visits a sitter comes to your home at set times to feed, clean, play and give medicines, then leaves. With overnight sitting the sitter stays in your home, including at night. Both keep your pet in its own home; the difference is how long it is alone.

Which costs more, visits or overnight sitting?

A night costs more than a visit: Rs 2,199 against Rs 599 for 30 minutes in Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru. But three visits a day come to Rs 1,797, so compare the total for your trip, not the price per visit or per night.
