Free pet tools

Updated By Petym

Petym's free pet tools turn your own pet's details into answers: a puppy's vaccine dates from its birthday, whether its vaccines cover the dates of a stay, how much to feed, how far to walk, its age in human years, and a care sheet and checklist for whoever looks after it. Each is built on a named veterinary source.

Every tool is worked out in your browser, with no sign-up, and nothing you type is sent to Petym. None of them gives a dose or a diagnosis: where a question needs a vet, the tool says so.

Which tool do I need?

Leaving instructions for a sitter
The pet care sheetThe medication schedule

The vaccine tools follow WSAVA's 2024 guidelines and ICAR-IVRI's schedule, and show where the two differ. The food calculators use AAHA's 2021 energy formula, the age calculators the 2020 DNA-methylation study of Wang and colleagues and International Cat Care's chart, and the walk planner the Royal Kennel Club's exercise bands.

What does each free pet tool answer?

The questions owners ask before a trip, at a new puppy's first vet visit or at the food bowl, each answered from your own pet's details.

Which source is each tool built on?

Every tool works from a published guideline, manual or study, named on its own page with the date it was checked.

The pet care sheet, the medication schedule and the going-away checklist are templates for your own instructions, built on RSPCA and PDSA advice on leaving a pet with a carer.

Which tools should you use before a trip, and when?

Used in order, five of the tools take you from booking the care to handing over the keys.

  1. Three to four weeks before

Run the vaccine due-date checker with the stay's dates, and see your vet about any vaccine that falls due before or during it. WSAVAstudy

  2. Three weeks before

Open the going-away checklist with your departure date: it dates every job from here to the day you leave. RSPCA (England and Wales)

  3. Two weeks before

Use the pet care plan to count the visits, walks or nights your trip needs. Cats Protection advises a sitter at least twice a day for a cat left at home. Cats Protection

  4. One week before

Fill in the pet care sheet and the medication schedule, copying each medicine's name and amount from its label. PDSA

  5. The day before

Print both sheets and leave them where the sitter will see them, with the vaccination card. RSPCA (England and Wales)

What do the tools show that rules of thumb get wrong?

  • You may have read

One dog year equals seven human years.

    Myth

    What the sources say

The American Veterinary Medical Association says dogs do not age at 7 human years per dog year. They age fastest in their first years and more slowly after. AVMA

  • You may have read

The feeding guide on the pack is exact for your pet.

    Myth

    What the sources say

WSAVA says real energy needs can differ by up to 50% either way between pets. Any amount, the pack's or a calculator's, is a starting point: weigh again and adjust. WSAVA

  • You may have read

A pavement that feels warm is fine for paws.

    Myth

    What the sources say

The Royal Kennel Club advises putting the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds: if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws. The Royal Kennel Club

  • You may have read

Life stage does not matter once a pet is grown.

    Myth

    What the sources say

AAHA recommends that vets plan care by life stage, which is why the age calculators show the stage beside the human years. AAHA (JAAHA)

When should you stop using a tool and call a vet?

The tools are for planning. These moments need a vet, not a calculator.

  • If Your dog has eaten onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol or another toxic food

Call your vet or the nearest 24-hour vet now, before signs appear. The checker gives no safe amounts. ASPCA Animal Poison Control

  • If Your dog collapses, pants heavily or struggles to breathe on a walk

Stop, cool it with water and call your vet. Heatstroke is an emergency. PDSA

  • If Your puppy seems too thin, too heavy or is not growing

Ask your vet. The estimator is a range from a small study, not a prediction for your puppy. Revista MVZ Cordoba (2014), Posada, Gomez and Roserostudy

  • If Your pet is losing weight, has stopped eating, or is pregnant or nursing

Your vet sets the amount to feed, not a calculator. WSAVA

  • If A vaccine is overdue or falls due during a stay

See your vet before the stay. Only your vet decides whether and when to give it. WSAVAstudy

What do the words in the tools mean?

Resting energy requirement (RER)
The calories a pet burns at rest: 70 x its weight in kg to the power 0.75. The food calculators start here. AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)
Life-stage factor
The number RER is multiplied by for a pet's age and activity: 1.4 to 1.6 for a neutered adult dog and 1.2 to 1.4 for a neutered adult cat, AAHA advises. AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)
kcal per kg
The energy in your food, printed on the pack. Dividing the day's calories by it gives grams a day. WSAVA
Core vaccine
A vaccine every dog or cat should have wherever it lives, such as DHPPi for dogs and the Tricat for cats on Indian cards. WSAVAstudy
Next-due date
The date your vet writes on the vaccination card for the next dose. The due-date checker reads only these dates. WSAVAstudy
Life stage
Puppy or kitten, young adult, mature adult, senior: the stages vets use to plan care, which the age calculators show. AAHA/AAFP (Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2021)

Is anything you type sent to Petym?

No. Every tool works in your browser, and nothing you enter leaves your device.

Your puppy's birthday, your pet's weight, your vet's number and the medicines on the sheet are worked out and printed on your own phone or computer. Petym does not see them, store them or ask you to sign up. To keep a result, print it or save it as a PDF.

The only thing that ever reaches Petym is a form you choose to send, such as the waitlist for your city, which is separate from every tool. Petym is not taking bookings yet: it is opening city by city, once local sitters have passed its checks.

Questions owners ask

Are Petym's pet tools free?

Yes. Every tool on this page is free to use, with no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it. Petym is a pet sitting marketplace opening city by city in India, and the tools are free whether or not you ever book a sitter.

Do I need to create an account to use the tools?

No. The tools work in your browser without an account. Nothing you type is sent to Petym, so to keep a result, such as a vaccine plan or a care sheet, print it or save it as a PDF.

Which tool should I use before going on holiday?

Start with the going-away checklist, which dates every job from your departure. Use the vaccine due-date checker three to four weeks ahead, then fill in the pet care sheet and medication schedule a week before and leave them for your sitter.

Can the food calculators tell me exactly how much to feed?

No calculator can. They give a starting point from AAHA's energy formula and the kcal on your pack. WSAVA says real needs can differ by up to 50% either way, so weigh your pet every two weeks and adjust, and ask your vet for a sick, pregnant or overweight pet.

Do the vaccine tools follow the Indian schedule?

They follow WSAVA's 2024 guidelines and show ICAR-IVRI's Indian schedule beside them where the two differ. They show typical windows, not a prescription: your vet decides which vaccines your pet gets and when.

Is the dog age calculator accurate for Indie dogs?

It applies the same published methods to every dog. The 2020 formula was built almost entirely on Labrador retrievers, and no Indian study we could find gives age figures for Indie dogs, so treat the number as approximate and use the life stage for care.

Can a tool tell me if my dog is safe after eating something?

No. The food checker says which foods are toxic and why, but gives no safe amounts, because that depends on your dog's size and health. If your dog has eaten something toxic, call your vet or the nearest 24-hour vet now.

Can my pet sitter use the care sheet and medication schedule?

Yes, that is what they are for. Print them and leave them where the sitter will see them. The medication sheet has a tick box for every dose on every day, so anyone can see what has been given and what is due.
