Summer pet care in India: heat waves, walks and water

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

In an Indian summer, keep your pet in shade with fresh water all day, walk only in the early morning or late evening, test the road with your palm before walks, and never leave a pet in a parked car. Flat-faced, overweight, old and very young pets need the most care.

IMD says heat waves come mainly from March to June and peak in May. Heatstroke is an emergency: start cooling your pet with cool water and moving air at once, then go to a vet.

Why is the Indian summer hard on dogs and cats?

Pets cool themselves mostly by panting, and that works less well when the air is hot, humid or still.

IMD notes that high humidity and hot winds make a heat wave worse for people, and that warm nights stop the body recovering from the day's heat. Pets live in the same flats and streets. The Animal Welfare Board of India's 2026 heat advisory says animals, including but not limited to dogs, are particularly vulnerable to dehydration, heatstroke and burns from hot surfaces in extreme heat.

Heat does not have to be extreme to cause harm. In a large UK study of dogs seen by vets for heat-related illness, exercise triggered about three in four cases, hot surroundings about one in eight and vehicles about one in twenty. In other words, the everyday walk and the stuffy room matter more than the rare dramatic case, and they are exactly what an Indian summer makes risky.

Use IMD's colour-coded heat-wave warnings, which it publishes in its daily bulletins for the next five days, as your signal to change the day's plan.

Which pets are most at risk in the heat?

Any dog or cat can get heatstroke, but some start with a handicap.

Why the risk is higherWhat to change in summer
Flat-faced dogs (Pug, Bulldog, French Bulldog, Shih Tzu) Scientific Reports (2020)studyAbout twice the odds of heat-related illness of medium-nosed dogs in a large UK studyShort, slow walks at dawn only; air-conditioning or a fan room through the day
Flat-faced cats (Persian, Himalayan) PDSAPDSA lists flat-faced cats such as Persians among the most vulnerableA cool, ventilated room; never a closed balcony or a parked car
Overweight pets PDSAExtra weight makes it harder to stay cool; heavier dogs had higher odds in the UK dataKeep play gentle and talk to your vet about weight before the next summer
Old pets Scientific Reports (2020)studyDogs aged 12 or older had the highest odds in the UK study; very old cats are on PDSA's listCheck on them more often on hot afternoons
Puppies and kittens PDSAPDSA lists very young dogs and very young kittens as higher riskShort play sessions indoors, water always within reach
Thick or long coats (Husky, Golden Retriever, Persian) PDSAPDSA lists thick-coated dogs and long-coated cats as more vulnerableBrush often; ask your groomer and vet before any clip
Pets with heart or lung disease PDSAPDSA lists cats with heart or lung disease as higher risk; breathing trouble is a reason to skip exerciseAsk your vet for a summer plan

No Indian data on heat illness in pets was found; the risk figures come from UK veterinary records.

What does a safe summer day look like for a pet?

Plan the day around the heat, not the other way round.

  • Shade at all times, indoors or out. The AWBI advisory asks for shaded areas throughout the day. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Clean, fresh water, refilled often, in wide, stable bowls or earthen pots that cannot be knocked over, placed in the shade. Animal Welfare Board of India
  • Walks early in the morning or in the evening, never in the hottest part of the day. PDSA
  • No exercise at all on hot days for a dog that is unfit, elderly, young, overweight, unwell or has breathing trouble. PDSA
  • Before a walk, press your palm on the road for 7 seconds. If you cannot keep it there comfortably, it is too hot for paws. Tarmac and sand heat up fast. PDSA
  • Water on every walk, and a cool spot or a shallow tub of water at home for dogs that like it. Never force a frightened dog into water. PDSA
  • No pet in a parked car, even briefly, even in shade, even with the windows open. PDSA
  • Before you shut a store room, balcony door, car or cupboard, check that the cat is not inside. PDSA

What are the signs of heat stress, and what should you do?

Act at the first signs. Cool first, then go to the vet.

  • If Mild: heavy panting, fast or laboured breathing, low energy

Stop all activity and move your pet into shade or a cool room. Offer water without forcing it. Watch closely and call your vet if the signs do not settle. PDSA

  • If Moderate: drooling, foaming, vomiting, diarrhoea, very red or pale gums, shaking, weakness

Start cooling now: pour cool tap water over the body, away from the nose and mouth, with a fan or open windows for moving air. Then go to a vet, keeping the car cool, with someone cooling your pet on the way. PDSA

  • If Severe: confusion, seizures, collapse, unconsciousness, blood in vomit or stools

This is an emergency. Cool on the spot with cool running water while someone calls the nearest 24-hour vet, and travel as soon as you can. Never put an unconscious pet in water. RECOVER Initiative (Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2026)study

  • If A cat panting, breathing fast or staggering

Cats rarely pant. PDSA lists panting and fast breathing as early signs of heatstroke in cats: cool the cat gently with cool, not icy, water and contact your vet. PDSA

What if the power goes off in a hot flat?

Many Indian homes lose power on summer afternoons, and a closed flat on a high floor heats up quickly once the fan or air-conditioner stops. This section is Petym's practical advice, built on the sources above: shade, water and airflow are what keep a pet safe.

  • Pick the coolest room before summer starts: usually one that does not face west, on a lower floor, with a tiled floor your pet can lie on.
  • Draw curtains and close shutters on the sunny side in the morning, before the room heats up.
  • If you have an inverter, put the fan in your pet's room on it.
  • Leave extra water bowls in two or three places, in case one is knocked over.
  • If you are out all day in a heat wave, arrange for someone to check on your pet in the afternoon, or for your dog to spend the day somewhere cooler.
  • Keep your vet's number and the nearest 24-hour vet's address where anyone at home can find them.

How should a sitter look after a pet in a heat wave?

When Petym opens in a city, a sitter will follow your pet's plan as you write it, including walk times, and log each walk and meal as it happens; you will get a photo update every day of the booking. In a heat wave, write the summer rules into the plan: the walk window, the coolest room, where the spare water bowls go and what to do in a power cut.

If your pet shows signs of heatstroke, the sitter will start cooling it, call you and take it to the nearest 24-hour vet on the city's list. Tell the sitter, in writing, if your pet is flat-faced, old, overweight or has a heart or breathing problem, so they know to take extra care. A free meet and greet before the first booking is the time to show them the room and the routine.

Yes. The AWBI's 2026 advisory points out that under Section 3 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, every person in charge of an animal must take all reasonable measures to ensure its well-being and prevent unnecessary pain or suffering, and that failing to do so is an offence under Section 11(1). It asks people to provide shade and water and to watch for heatstroke signs such as excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, rapid heartbeat and collapse, seeking veterinary help at once if they appear.

The same advisory reminds readers that working animals may not draw vehicles or carry loads between 12 noon and 3 pm where the temperature exceeds 37 °C. The rule is for draught and pack animals, but the hours are a sensible guide for a dog's walk too.

Questions owners ask

What time should I walk my dog in an Indian summer?

Early in the morning or in the evening, after the road has cooled. PDSA advises avoiding the hottest part of the day and testing the ground with your palm for 7 seconds before a walk. On heat-wave days, keep walks short and slow, and skip them for old, overweight or flat-faced dogs.

How do I know if the road is too hot for my dog's paws?

Press the back or palm of your hand on the road for 7 seconds. If you cannot hold it there comfortably, it is too hot for paws. PDSA notes that tarmac, sand and artificial grass heat up fast, so walk on shaded grass or wait until evening.

Is it safe to leave my dog at home alone during a heat wave?

Only in a cool, shaded room with plenty of water in stable bowls and airflow that does not depend on one fan. If power cuts are common, or your dog is flat-faced, old or unwell, arrange an afternoon check or a cooler place to spend the day.

Do cats get heatstroke in India?

Yes. PDSA lists panting and fast breathing as early signs in cats, followed by vomiting, weakness and staggering. Flat-faced cats such as Persians, overweight, long-coated and very old cats are at higher risk. Keep them in a cool, ventilated room and contact your vet if they pant.

When is heat-wave season in India?

IMD says heat waves occur mainly from March to June, rarely into July, and peak in May. They affect the plains of northwest, central and east India most, and sometimes Tamil Nadu and Kerala. IMD publishes colour-coded warnings for the next five days in its daily bulletins.

How much water should my dog drink in summer?

There is no single figure that suits every dog: needs change with size, food, health and the heat. Keep clean water available at all times, refill it often, and tell your vet if your dog suddenly drinks much more or much less than usual, which can be a sign of illness.

Should I shave my dog for summer?

Ask your vet or a groomer who knows the breed before any clip. PDSA lists thick-coated dogs as more vulnerable to heat, but regular brushing to remove dead undercoat, shade and cool walking hours are the first steps. A clip changes how the coat protects the skin, so get advice first.
