Monsoon pet care in India: leptospirosis, paws and ears

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

In the Indian monsoon, keep your dog out of floodwater and puddles, dry its paws, ears and skin folds after every wet walk, keep tick prevention going, and ask your vet about the leptospirosis vaccine before the rains. Leptospirosis cases rise in the monsoon, and it can spread from dogs to people.

See a vet the same day if your dog is dull, vomiting or off its food after wading through water, and go to a 24-hour vet for yellow gums, very little urine, bleeding or breathing trouble. The rains reach Kerala around 1 June and Delhi around 27 June; Chennai's heaviest rain comes later, from October to December.

Why is the monsoon a risky season for pets in India?

Standing water, damp skin and more ticks arrive together, and the vet may be harder to reach on a flooded night.

The Health Ministry's 2026 advisory notes that leptospirosis cases start rising in the monsoon in endemic states. The bacteria are passed in the urine of infected animals such as rats, wash into puddles, drains and flooded streets, and survive a long time in surface water. A dog that walks through that water, drinks from a puddle or has a cut paw is exposed, and the disease can pass from dogs to people.

Damp is the second problem. Warm, moist skin, ear canals and the gaps between toes let bacteria overgrow, so wet walks that are not followed by a good dry can lead to skin fold infections, ear infections and sore paws. Ticks are the third: studies in Chennai, Bhubaneswar and Tripura found ticks on dogs most often in the monsoon months. India's National Centre for Disease Control runs a national programme against leptospirosis in people, and outbreaks in people have followed floods in Kerala. The water that puts your family at risk puts your dog at risk too, so treat a flood warning for your area as a warning for your pet.

Then there is the practical side. Waterlogged roads make a night trip to a 24-hour vet slower, thunderstorms frighten noise-sensitive dogs, and a snakebite needs a vet fast. None of this means keeping a dog indoors for four months; it means changing the walk, the drying routine and the plan for an emergency.

How do you prepare a pet before the rains arrive?

Start in May in most of India, and in September for Chennai. The timing is Petym's practical sequence, built from the sources on this page.

  1. Four to six weeks before your city's onset date

Book a vet visit: ask whether your dog needs the leptospirosis vaccine or its yearly booster, and check the date of the last dose on the card. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

  2. Before the first heavy rain

Make sure tick prevention is current, and keep it going all year. Tropical Council for Companion Animal Parasites

  3. Before the first heavy rain

Seal gaps where rats get in, and keep your pet's area clean and rodent-free. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

  4. In the first week of rain

Walk your usual routes and note where water collects, where drains overflow and where garbage piles up, and plan routes around them. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

  5. Through the season

Dry paws, ears and skin folds after every wet walk, and check for ticks. Merck Veterinary Manual

  6. As the rains withdraw

Keep up the tick checks, and in Mumbai expect a hot, humid October and November. India Meteorological Department

How do dogs catch leptospirosis, and can it spread to your family?

Through water, soil or urine contaminated by infected animals. And yes, it can pass to people.

Dogs catch leptospirosis through contact with contaminated urine or water, through bite wounds or broken skin, or by eating infected meat or carcasses, and occasionally at birth. The bacteria survive a long time in surface water, which is why floodwater, drains and puddles near garbage points, where rats feed, are the riskiest places in a city. Some infections cause no signs; others come on suddenly and become severe.

Kidney damage is the most common pattern: lethargy, poor appetite, vomiting, dehydration, back pain, and too much or too little urine. Sudden liver failure can turn the gums, skin and eyes yellow. Some dogs bleed, with nosebleeds, bruising or blood in the stool or vomit, and some cough or struggle to breathe. Diagnosis needs laboratory tests, and very ill dogs are treated in hospital.

Dogs that survive can carry the bacteria in their kidneys and shed them in urine for months or years. If your dog is diagnosed, Merck advises letting it urinate only where you can clean and disinfect, wearing gloves to clean up urine, washing your hands well after handling the dog, and talking to your own doctor about any health concerns. The Health Ministry's advice for people is to avoid stagnant and flooded water and areas frequented by rats, and to wear gloves and boots where contact is likely.

Which signs after a wet walk need a vet?

Tell the vet if your dog waded through floodwater, drank from puddles or caught a rat. That history changes what they test for.

  • If Lethargy, poor appetite or vomiting in the days after floodwater

See a vet the same day and mention the water. These are the commonest early signs of leptospirosis. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Drinking and urinating much more, or passing very little or no urine

Urgent: these point to kidney damage. Call your vet now. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Yellow gums, skin or whites of the eyes

Go to a 24-hour vet: a sign of liver failure. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Nosebleeds, bruising, blood in the stool or vomit, a cough or difficulty breathing

Go to a 24-hour vet now and call ahead. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Dull, feverish or pale gums a week or two after ticks

Call your vet: tick fever is common in the rains. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If A suspected snakebite: sudden swelling, fang marks, bleeding from the wound, or weakness

Keep the dog calm and still and go straight to a vet: a venomous snakebite is a true emergency. Merck Veterinary Manual

Should your dog have the leptospirosis vaccine before the rains?

Ask your vet. Most guidelines now lean towards yes where the disease is common, and the Health Ministry asks owners to consider it.

WSAVA's 2024 vaccination guidelines call the leptospirosis vaccine core where the disease is endemic, the disease-causing types are known and a suitable vaccine exists. In India the types have not been established. The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine advises yearly vaccination for all dogs, and the Health Ministry's 2026 advisory asks pet owners to consider vaccinating against it.

The vaccine is given yearly, starting with two doses a few weeks apart (2 to 4 weeks, depending on the vaccine). Vaccines cover the common types but not every strain, so a vaccinated dog still needs to stay out of floodwater. If 18 months or more have passed since the last dose, WSAVA advises restarting with two doses, so a lapsed dog needs planning a month or more ahead. Time the booster so it is not overdue when the rains arrive, and see the dog vaccination schedule for the full card.

What should you do after every wet walk?

Ten minutes with a towel prevents most of the skin, ear and paw problems vets see in the rains.

How do you walk a dog safely in the rains?

Shorter, planned walks on higher ground, with the dog on a lead.

What about thunderstorms, storms and street animals?

Noise sensitivity was the most common anxiety trait in a survey of 13,700 Finnish dogs, affecting about a third, and fear of thunder often goes with fear of fireworks. If your dog trembles, hides or tries to escape in storms, give it a quiet den in an inner room, close windows and curtains, and keep it on a lead for toilet trips in bad weather. The same plan works for Diwali, and our Diwali guide covers it in detail.

The Animal Welfare Board of India's 2026 monsoon advisory asks citizens to help community animals through the rains: temporary shelters on dry, raised, ventilated ground away from paths, parks, staircases and parking areas; clean drinking water in stable, wide-mouthed metal bowls; good drainage and waste disposal so food and water are not contaminated; and coordination with local vets for sick or injured animals. It also encourages people to let stray animals shelter in porches and garages where they can.

What does a Petym sitter do differently in the monsoon?

When Petym opens in a city, a sitter will follow your pet's plan as you write it and log each walk and meal as it happens, with a photo update every day of the booking. For the rains, write the monsoon rules into the plan: which routes flood, how long walks should be, where the towels are kept, how you dry the ears and folds, and the tick product and its due date.

Every Petym sitter completes pet first-aid training before the first booking and has a named 24-hour vet within reach. If your dog is dull, vomiting or off its food after wet walks, has yellow gums, or is bitten by a snake, the sitter will call you and take it to the nearest 24-hour vet on the city's list, telling the vet about any floodwater or ticks. A free meet and greet before the first booking is the time to walk the route together.

Questions owners ask

How can I keep my dog safe from leptospirosis in the rains?

Keep your dog out of floodwater, stagnant water and puddles, carry clean drinking water, keep it away from drains, garbage points and dead rats, and dry and check its paws for cuts after walks. Ask your vet about the yearly leptospirosis vaccine before the monsoon, and keep your home and your pet's area rodent-free.

What are the first signs of leptospirosis in a dog?

Often lethargy, poor appetite and vomiting, sometimes with a painful back, more thirst, or much less urine. Yellow gums or eyes, bleeding and breathing trouble are later, serious signs. Some infections cause no signs at all. If your dog has been in floodwater and seems unwell, see a vet the same day.

Can I catch leptospirosis from my dog?

Yes, it can pass to people through an infected dog's urine, and a dog can shed the bacteria for months after recovering. Wear gloves to clean up urine, wash your hands after handling the dog, keep children away from its urine, and talk to your own doctor if your dog is diagnosed.

Is it safe to walk my dog in the rain?

Yes, with care. Walk on higher, drained ground, go around puddles and floodwater, keep your dog on a lead near drains and garbage, and carry water so it does not drink from puddles. Towel-dry the coat, paws, ears and skin folds when you get home, and check for ticks.

Why does my dog smell and scratch more in the monsoon?

Damp skin and ears let bacteria overgrow, especially in skin folds, armpits, ears and between the toes, and ticks are common in the rains. Dry your dog well after every wet walk. If the smell, redness or scratching does not settle, see your vet rather than trying home remedies.

Do cats need monsoon care too?

Yes. Keep cats indoors during heavy rain and storms, give them a dry, warm bed, and keep their food and water away from rats. Cats need tick and flea products licensed for cats only, because some dog products are toxic to them. Take a cat that stops eating or hides more than usual to the vet.

When does the monsoon start in my city?

IMD's normal dates are around 1 June in Kerala, 3 June in Bengaluru, 10 June in Pune, 11 June in Mumbai and Hyderabad, 12 June in Kolkata, 26 June in Ahmedabad and 27 June in Delhi. Chennai gets most of its rain later, from October to December, in the northeast monsoon.

What should I do if my dog is bitten by a snake in the monsoon?

Keep your dog calm and still and go straight to a vet: Merck calls a venomous snakebite a true emergency, and antivenom works best within 6 hours. Do not use a tourniquet, cut or suck the wound, or apply ice. Bring the dead snake only if that is safe.
