What is group dog walk?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
A group dog walk is when one walker takes several dogs from different homes out together, instead of a solo walk with one dog. It can give sociable dogs company and exercise, but more dogs means less control near traffic and street dogs. As a benchmark, England's licensing guidance caps a day care walker at 6 dogs at once.
Also called pack walk, group walk, multi-dog walk, solo vs group dog walking.
Key facts
- England's dog day care guidance says a dog walker may walk no more than 6 dogs at the same time. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK)
- The same guidance requires every dog to be screened before it joins a group, to check it is not afraid, anxious or stressed around other dogs. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK)
- Dogs outside the premises must wear an identity tag with the licence holder's details. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK)
- Dogs pull when excited, and PDSA recommends a harness for a dog that pulls, to help prevent neck injury. PDSA
Solo or group walk: which suits your dog?
A general comparison. Your dog's temperament matters more than the price.
| Solo walk | Group walk | |
|---|---|---|
| Attention | All of the walker's attention on one dog | Shared between several dogs |
| Control near traffic PDSA | Easier to hold one lead and steer | Harder with several leads and dogs pulling different ways |
| Good for Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK) | Puppies, seniors, reactive or nervous dogs, dogs in training | Calm, sociable adult dogs that walk well on a lead |
| Pace and route | Set to the one dog's needs | Set to the group; slower or faster dogs adjust |
| Disease risk Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK) | Lower | Close contact can spread infections such as kennel cough; vaccines matter |
How many dogs is too many for one walker?
Petym has not found a national Indian rule on how many dogs one walker may take at once. England's statutory guidance for licensed dog day care sets 6 at the same time as the limit for its walkers, which is a useful benchmark: beyond a handful of dogs, one person cannot hold every lead firmly, pick up after every dog, and react when a scooter swerves onto the footpath or a group of community dogs comes running.
Size and behaviour matter as much as the number. Three large dogs that pull can be harder to manage than five small calm ones. A good walker groups dogs that know each other and walk at the same pace, and walks a dog solo if it does not fit.
What should you ask a walker who walks dogs in groups?
Ask before the first walk, and watch a walk if you can.
- How many dogs are on each walk, and is there a maximum? Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK)
- How a new dog is introduced to the group, and whether it is assessed first. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK)
- Which vaccinations the other dogs must have. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (UK)
- Whether dogs stay on leads, and what equipment the walker uses; ask for a harness rather than a choke chain. PDSA
- What time and where they walk in summer, and how they keep dogs cool and watered.
- What happens if a dog is hurt or a fight starts, and which vet they would use.
How does dog walking work on Petym?
On Petym, dog walking is paid per walk, booked and paid through Petym, with the walker paid after the booking. The walker follows your dog's plan as you wrote it, including your rules on leads, routes and other dogs, and logs each walk. Agree at the free meet and greet whether your dog walks alone or with other dogs.
Every Petym walker's identity is verified with PAN, and they complete pet first-aid training before their first booking. In an emergency the walker calls you and takes your dog to the nearest 24-hour vet on the city's list. Petym is pre-launch, and its walk prices are on its rate card on the Pricing page.

Questions owners ask
How many dogs can a dog walker walk at once?
- Petym has not found a national Indian rule on this. As a benchmark, England's statutory guidance for licensed dog day care says a dog walker may walk no more than 6 dogs at the same time. Fewer is safer on busy Indian streets, and size and behaviour matter as much as the number.
Are group walks good for dogs?
- For calm, sociable adult dogs that walk well on a lead, a small group walk can add company and exercise. They are not right for puppies, seniors, nervous or reactive dogs, or dogs still learning to walk on a loose lead, which do better on solo walks.
Is my dog at risk of kennel cough on a group walk?
- Any close contact between dogs can spread airway infections such as kennel cough. Ask the walker which vaccinations the other dogs must have, and keep your own dog's vaccinations current as your vet advises. Keep a coughing dog off group walks.

More in services and booking
- Background checkA background check is what a pet care service verifies about a sitter before they care for your pet and enter your home. It can cover identity, police verification, references, training and the sitter's home. Services differ widely, so ask what was checked. Petym verifies identity with PAN; police verification is not one of its stated checks.
- Care sheetA care sheet is the written plan you leave for whoever looks after your pet: what and when it eats, walks and toilet routine, medicines and how to give them, habits and fears, and who to call, including your vet. Welfare bodies list these as the essentials. On Petym, the sitter follows your plan as written and logs each task.
- Daily photo updateA daily photo update is a photo of your pet, with a short note, that the sitter sends each day of a booking, so you can see your pet is fed, well and settled. The best updates are specific: food, walks, toilet, medicines and mood. On Petym, a daily photo update is sent every day of every booking.
- Doggy day careDoggy day care is daytime care for your dog while you work: you drop it off in the morning and collect it in the evening, with no overnight stay. The dog gets company, play, walks and rest instead of a long day alone. Good day care screens each dog first and keeps groups small.
- Drop-in visitA drop-in visit is when a pet sitter comes to your home, once or more a day, to feed your pet, refresh water, clean the litter tray or take the dog out, give medicines and spend time with it, then leaves. It suits cats and independent pets that are happier at home. On Petym, drop-in visits are paid per visit.
- Home boardingHome boarding means your pet stays in a sitter's own home while you are away, living as part of the household rather than in a kennel run. It suits sociable dogs that settle well in new places. Good sitters take few pets, meet each one first and keep its records. On Petym, every sitter's home is checked by video first.
- House sittingHouse sitting means someone lives in your home while you are away, looking after the house and often the pets. The arrangement is built around the home: security, plants, post. Pet sitting is built around the animal: its meals, walks, medicines and company. Many pet owners want both, which is what an overnight pet sitter staying in your home provides.
- Key handoverA key handover is the agreed way a pet sitter gets into your home: a key handed over, one left with a trusted neighbour or the society office, or a digital lock code. In a flat it also means telling the watchman the sitter is expected. Done well, it is planned, written down and reversed when the booking ends.
- Meet and greetA meet and greet is a short visit before any booking where the owner, the pet and the sitter meet. You see how the sitter handles your pet and ask questions; your pet learns the sitter's face and smell. Welfare bodies advise meeting a sitter before hiring. On Petym, the meet and greet is free, before the first booking.
- Overnight pet sittingOvernight pet sitting means a sitter stays in your home, including overnight, while you are away, so your pet keeps its own home, routine and company. It suits dogs that cannot be left alone, senior pets, pets on medicine and anxious animals. It is Petym's main service: the sitter follows your pet's plan and is paid by the day.
