Cane Corso in India: breed rules, heat, training and notes for your sitter
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
A Cane Corso can stay with a sitter it knows, but only with someone confident handling a large guardian. The FCI standard calls it a guardian of property, family and livestock, and AKC rates it 5 of 5 protective. It needs serious exercise, which in India means dawn and after dark, and a sitter who follows the owner's commands exactly.
The Cane Corso is on the centre's March 2024 list of breeds called ferocious. Two High Courts struck that letter down, but Gurugram still requires a leash, chain lead and muzzle outside the home.

Where does the Cane Corso come from?
The FCI standard names the old Roman Molossian as the Cane Corso's direct ancestor. AKC traces it to the Molossian guardian dogs Roman legions brought back from Greece and crossed with Italian dogs. The name comes from the Latin "cohors", meaning protector or guardian of the farmyard.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire the breed turned to farm work: hunting wild boar, droving livestock and guarding farmsteads. Once found all over Italy, it was by the mid-20th century nearly extinct, surviving mainly in Apulia and the south.
Italian enthusiasts began reviving the breed in the 1970s and formed a society of Cane Corso lovers in 1983. The first Cane Corso reached America in 1988, and AKC recognised the breed in 2010.
How did the Cane Corso come to India?
Petym found no official or published source that records when or how the Cane Corso first came to India, so its arrival is not documented here. Pedigree dogs can be registered with the Kennel Club of India.
The Cane Corso is on the centre's 12 March 2024 list of breeds called ferocious. The Delhi High Court set that letter aside on 16 April 2024 and recorded that the Karnataka High Court had quashed it on 10 April 2024. Local rules still apply: Gurugram's June 2026 order requires listed breeds to be registered and kept on a leash, chain lead and muzzle outside private premises.
What care does a Cane Corso need?
The three things that shape a good day for this breed.
Exercise
Serious exercise: AKC suggests a brisk walk or run of at least a mile morning and evening, plus mental work such as training or scent games. In Indian summers move both sessions to dawn and after dark. American Kennel Club
Grooming
Brush weekly, daily in a heavy shed, with a medium-bristle brush or rubber mitt. Trim the nails regularly, check the ears for infection and brush the teeth often (AKC). Do not shave the double coat: it does not help a dog cool off. Canadian Kennel Club (The Dish, June 2018)
Training
Early socialisation and puppy classes are a must for a dog this big and protective, says AKC. Cane Corsos are intelligent and eager to please, and respond far better to rewards than to harsh corrections. American Kennel Club
How much should a Cane Corso eat?
Daily calories for a healthy, neutered adult Cane Corso, worked out from its weight with the formula vets use (70 x weight in kg to the power 0.75, then AAHA's factor for a neutered adult). Divide by the kcal per kg on your food's pack for grams a day, and adjust by body shape.
| Resting need (kcal a day) | Neutered adult (kcal a day) | |
|---|---|---|
| 40 kg AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) | 1110 | 1560 to 1780 |
| 45 kg | 1220 | 1700 to 1950 |
| 50 kg | 1320 | 1840 to 2110 |
AKC advises a good-quality dog food suited to the dog's age, commercial or home-prepared with your vet's approval. Watch weight and treats, and keep clean water out all day. Large and giant breeds can take almost 2 years to become adults, so ask your vet when to switch from puppy food. The breed is deep-chested and can get bloat, so feed two or three smaller meals a day instead of one large one. Keep onion, garlic, grapes and raisins, chocolate, bones and xylitol sweets away; ASPCA lists them as harmful. Meals a day: 6 to 12 weeks, 4 a day; 3 to 6 months, 3 a day; 6 to 12 months, 2 a day; adult, 2 to 3 smaller meals a day. Puppies, kittens, working, pregnant and older animals need different amounts: ask your vet, or use Petym's food calculator.
Which illnesses is the Cane Corso prone to, and how are they treated?
The conditions veterinary studies and breed surveys most often report in the Cane Corso. Knowing the early signs means a vet sees it sooner.
See your vet first. This is general information from veterinary sources, not a diagnosis. Only a vet who has examined your pet can say what is wrong and prescribe treatment, and this page never gives a dose. Do not give your pet human medicine. If your pet seems very unwell, go to a 24-hour vet: find one in your city.
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus)
Emergency: go to a vet nowThe stomach fills with gas and can twist. AKC says the breed may be affected, and large, deep-chested dogs are at higher risk. American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Signs to watch for
- Retching with nothing coming up
- Restlessness and drooling
- A swollen, tight belly
- Weakness or collapse
How a vet treats it
This needs a vet straight away. A vet stabilises the dog with fluids and oxygen, lets the gas out of the stomach, and operates to put the stomach back and fix it in place (gastropexy).
Prevention
Two or three smaller meals a day. Ask your vet about a preventive gastropexy, which can be done during spaying or neutering.
Eyelid disorders (ectropion and entropion)
See a vet soonEctropion is a lower lid that droops out; entropion is a lid that rolls in so the lashes rub the eye. The Cane Corso had 7.02 times the odds of crossbreds in a UK study, and 39.63 times the odds for ectropion. PLOS ONE (2025), Royal Veterinary College VetCompassstudy
Signs to watch for
- A red, drooping lower lid
- Eye discharge or watering
- Squinting
How a vet treats it
A vet may plan medical treatment for the eye first. Some dogs need surgery to correct the eyelid, such as a wedge resection.
Hip dysplasia
Ask at a routine checkA loose hip joint in a growing dog that wears and turns arthritic. It is most common in large breeds, and AKC says Cane Corso breeders screen for it. American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Signs to watch for
- Stiffness after rest
- Difficulty rising or jumping
- Limping, or shifting weight onto the front legs
- Muscle loss on the back legs
How a vet treats it
A vet diagnoses it with an examination and X-rays. A vet may advise weight control, controlled exercise, physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory pain relief, and surgery such as a hip replacement for some dogs.
Prevention
Keep the dog lean from puppyhood and buy from screened parents.
Demodectic mange
See a vet soonAn overgrowth of Demodex mites that live normally in the skin. AKC lists it among the conditions Cane Corso breeders screen for, and it often starts in puppies under 6 months. Companion Animal Parasite Council
Signs to watch for
- Patchy hair loss on the head or legs
- Red skin
- Itching only if a skin infection follows
How a vet treats it
A vet confirms it with deep skin scrapes or hair plucks under a microscope. A vet may prescribe anti-parasite medicine for some months, and antibiotics if the skin is infected. Mild patches in puppies often clear by themselves.
Heatstroke
Emergency: go to a vet nowA dangerous rise in body temperature. Heavy dogs and dogs above their breed's average weight had higher odds in a large UK study, mostly during exercise. Scientific Reports (2020)study
Signs to watch for
- Heavy panting that does not settle
- Drooling, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Wobbling, weakness or collapse
How a vet treats it
Cool the dog with cool water and moving air and go to the vet at once. A vet may cool the dog further, give a fluid drip and oxygen, and test the blood for organ damage.
Prevention
Exercise only in the cool hours, keep the dog lean, and never shave its coat.
Is the Cane Corso banned in India?
It was on the 2024 central list, which courts in Delhi and Karnataka struck down. Some local bodies still regulate it.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's D.O. letter of 12 March 2024 told all States and Union Territories that an expert committee had identified certain breeds as ferocious and dangerous for human life. Gurugram's municipal order of 23 June 2026 reproduces the list, and the Cane Corso is on it, along with the Boerboel, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiler and others, and their mixes and crosses.
On 16 April 2024 the Delhi High Court set the circular aside after the Union's counsel admitted that no private body had been heard first, and directed the Ministry to invite written objections before any final notification. The order records that the Karnataka High Court had quashed the circular on 10 April 2024. AWBI's public notice of 19 March 2024 confirms the letter came from the Ministry, not AWBI.
Gurugram's order is a local rule that still applies there: owners of the listed breeds must register them, keep strict control, and use a leash, chain lead and muzzle whenever the dog is outside private premises. A sitter caring for a Cane Corso in Gurugram follows that on every walk. Elsewhere, ask your corporation.
How a Cane Corso handles a sitter
Well, if trust comes first. Badly, if a stranger simply walks in.
AKC calls the Cane Corso smart, trainable, assertive and confident, and says many can be dominant and protective, which is why early socialisation is a must for a dog this big and strong. It also says Cane Corsos respond to love and rewards far better than to harsh corrections. For a sitter, that means calm confidence, the owner's exact commands, and food rewards, never force.
Make the free meet and greet count. Walk together, then hand over the lead. Let the sitter feed a meal and practise an arrival at the front door while you are home. Tell the sitter honestly about any growling at visitors, guarding of food, toys or rooms, or reactions to dogs on the road. AKC rates the breed 3 of 5 with other dogs and 3 of 5 for openness to strangers.
PDSA's general advice is no more than 4 hours alone at a time for any dog. AKC warns that without mental as well as physical stimulation, undesirable behaviour will result. A Cane Corso bored in a flat for a long day is a real problem for the furniture and the neighbours.
Cane Corso health signs a sitter should report
A sitter notices, records, tells the owner and calls the vet. The first two are emergencies.
If Restless, retching with nothing coming up, a swollen or tight belly, drooling. AKC says the breed may be affected by bloat, and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons says it mainly affects large, deep-chested dogs.
Go to the nearest 24-hour vet straight away and call the owner on the way. American College of Veterinary Surgeons
If Heavy panting that will not settle in the cool, drooling, wobbling or collapse after exercise.
Heatstroke: move the dog somewhere cool, pour cool water over its body, use a fan and go to the vet at once. PDSA
If A red, drooping lower eyelid, an eyelid rolling in, or a watering, squinting eye. The Cane Corso had 7.02 times the odds of conformational eyelid disorders of crossbreds, and very high odds of ectropion, in a UK study.
Call the vet; do not let the dog rub its eye. PLOS ONE (2025), Royal Veterinary College VetCompassstudy
If Stiffness after rest, difficulty rising, a limp or reluctance on stairs.
Shorter walks on soft ground, no jumping from cars, and a call to the vet.
If Tiredness, weight loss or lumps in a dog that is middle-aged. Cane Corsos had a median lifespan of 8.1 years in a UK study, so changes in middle age deserve attention.
Tell the owner; do not wait for the next routine check. Scientific Reports (2024)study
A Cane Corso's exercise day in Indian heat
Petym’s working from the official rules, no government publishes a total.
A sample plan for the hot months that meets AKC's morning-and-evening exercise advice without the midday sun.
Before sunrise
The long walk, brisk, on a strong lead and on soft ground where possible. Test the road with the back of a hand for seven seconds first. Follow any local breed rule on the walk. The Royal Kennel Club
After the walk
Water and rest. Breakfast only once the dog has fully cooled; no hard play straight after the meal.
Mid-morning
Ten minutes of training indoors: sit, down, wait at the door, a 'place' command, with pieces of the day's food. AKC says the breed is happiest with a job. American Kennel Club
Midday to late afternoon
Indoors in the coolest room. A chew or food puzzle toy. Toilet breaks on shaded ground only. Animal Welfare Board of India
After dark
The second brisk walk once the ground has cooled, then dinner after a rest.
Evening
Quiet time, a weekly brush with a rubber mitt, a tick check and the daily photo update.
Handling a Cane Corso in a flat and society
Do
- Use a strong, well-fitted collar or harness and a short lead in lifts, corridors and at the gate.
- Put the dog in a separate room before opening the door to deliveries, cleaners or guests.
- Use rewards, not harsh corrections: AKC says the breed responds far better to love and rewards. American Kennel Club
- If a muzzle is used, it must fit and must never be left on unsupervised, as AWBI's guidelines say. Animal Welfare Board of India
- Give daily exercise. AWBI notes that failing to exercise a dog kept chained or closely confined is cruelty under the PCA Act, 1960. Animal Welfare Board of India
Don’t
- Do not let unfamiliar dogs or people rush up to the dog.
- Do not take a bowl, bone or toy away by hand if the dog guards it; trade it for a treat.
- Do not exercise it in the afternoon heat or straight after meals.
- Do not feed chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic or xylitol. ASPCA Animal Poison Control
Heat, weight, coat and ticks
A Cane Corso is a big, muscular dog. In the UK study of heat-related illness, dogs over 10 kg had higher odds than small dogs, dogs of 50 kg and above had the highest odds, and dogs at or above their breed's average weight had higher odds again; exercise caused most cases. That is why the long walks belong at dawn and after dark, and why the dog should be kept lean. AKC notes some dogs are prone to getting overweight and that too many treats cause obesity; WSAVA suggests treats stay under about 10% of daily calories.
The coat is short but double. AKC says the undercoat sheds through the year and more in the shedding season, and recommends weekly brushing, daily in a shed. Do not shave it: the Canadian Kennel Club says shaving a double-coated dog does not help it cool off. Ticks are common on Indian dogs: in a survey of 525 dogs in four Indian cities, ticks were found on 53%. Check the ears, neck, armpits and between the toes after every walk.
Talk to your vet about sterilisation if your dog is not neutered. The Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023 make the owner of a pet dog responsible for it, and the 2024 central letter, as reported, asked for it for the listed breeds. Never abandon a dog over a breed rule: abandonment without reasonable cause is cruelty under the PCA Act.

Questions owners ask
Is the Cane Corso banned in India?
- Not clearly, as of 21 October 2026. It is on the centre's 12 March 2024 list of breeds called ferocious, but the Delhi High Court set that letter aside on 16 April 2024 and recorded that the Karnataka High Court had quashed it. Gurugram still requires registration, a leash, chain lead and muzzle.
Can a Cane Corso stay with a pet sitter?
- Yes, with a confident sitter it has met and accepted, ideally in your own home. Use Petym's free meet and greet to walk together, hand over the lead and practise the front-door arrival. Tell the sitter honestly about guarding and reactions to visitors or dogs.
How long do Cane Corsos live?
- AKC gives 9 to 12 years. A 2024 UK study of 584,734 dogs found a median lifespan of 8.1 years for the Cane Corso, placing it among the breeds most at risk of early death. Regular vet checks and early reporting of changes matter.
How much exercise does a Cane Corso need?
- A lot. AKC suggests a brisk walk or run of at least a mile in the morning and again in the evening, plus mental work. In India, do it before sunrise and after dark, with training games indoors in the heat of the day.
Can a Cane Corso handle Indian heat?
- With care. In a large UK study, heavy dogs and dogs above their breed's average weight had higher odds of heat-related illness, mostly during exercise. Walk only in the cool hours, keep the dog lean, give it a cool room and never shave its double coat.
Is a Cane Corso good with other dogs?
- It varies. AKC rates the breed 3 of 5 with other dogs and says many can be dominant and protective, so socialisation matters. A sitter should avoid greetings with unfamiliar dogs and should not board it with other dogs unless the owner knows it is relaxed with them.
