Kombai dog care in India: strangers, heat and sitters

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

A Kombai is a medium-sized guarding hound from Theni in Tamil Nadu that a 2023 veterinary study describes as obedient with its owners and aggressive towards strangers. While you travel it does best at home with one sitter it has already met, kept on a leash outside, walked in the cool hours and fed exactly as you feed it.

ICAR-NBAGR added the Kombai to India's register of dog breeds in 2026. Beyond one survey of Theni dogs, little has been measured about its health or exercise needs.

Where does the Kombai come from?

The Kombai takes its name from Kombai village in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. A 2023 study by scientists at the TANUVAS veterinary college in Theni says its guarding nature made it popular, and it spread through the district and into neighbouring Madurai and Virudhunagar. The authors note it was used to hunt deer, wild boar and bison before hunting was banned.

These districts lie at the foothills of the Western Ghats, with fertile farmland and large orchards, and the study says the Kombai was the dog of choice to guard them for its hardiness, guarding behaviour and adaptability. It describes a medium-sized, muscular dog with powerful jaws and strong legs, aggressive towards strangers and obedient with its owners, and classes it as a mid-sized hound, a little shorter than the Rajapalayam.

How did the Kombai come to India?

The Kombai is native to Tamil Nadu. ICAR's National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources lists it as the sixth registered Indian dog breed, with Tamil Nadu as its home tract, after the Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Mudhol Hound, Gaddi and Changkhi; NBAGR announced it among 16 new breeds approved at the 14th meeting of its Breed Registration Committee, and Down To Earth reported the registration in August 2026. In his Mann Ki Baat address of 30 August 2020, the Prime Minister named the Kombai among Indian breeds and said the CRPF had included Kombai dogs in its squads.

In Theni today, the 2023 survey found most owners shared the family's food with the dog, and 65% kept it in its own shelter inside the house or on the farm. We found no published Kennel Club of India standard and no study of the breed's lifespan.

What care does a Kombai need?

The three things that shape a good day for this breed.

  • Exercise

No study has measured its exercise needs. It was bred to hunt and to guard farms, so plan two proper walks a day in the cool hours, on a secure collar and leash, and test the pavement with the back of your hand first. Veterinary Practitioner (December 2023), TANUVAS Veterinary College, Thenistudy

  • Grooming

The coat is short and needs little work. Check for ticks every day, since ticks were found on more than half the dogs in a four-city Indian survey. The Royal Kennel Club

  • Training

The 2023 study describes the Kombai as aggressive towards strangers and obedient with its owners. Socialise a puppy calmly with visitors, introduce any sitter at home with you present, and seek a qualified trainer early if guarding grows. Parasites & Vectors (2011)study

How much should a Kombai eat?

Daily calories for a healthy, neutered adult Kombai, worked out from its weight with the formula vets use (70 x weight in kg to the power 0.75, then AAHA's factor for a neutered adult). Divide by the kcal per kg on your food's pack for grams a day, and adjust by body shape.

Resting need (kcal a day)Neutered adult (kcal a day)
21.7 kg AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association)700990 to 1130
22 kg7101000 to 1140
22.4 kg7201010 to 1150

The 2023 survey found that 74% of owners cooked nothing special for their Kombai and shared the family's food, while kennels fed meat regularly and gave commercial puppy food up to about 45 days. The Merck Veterinary Manual says nutrition problems arise most often with unbalanced home-made diets, so a complete and balanced dog food, or a home recipe formulated by a vet nutritionist, is the safer base. Shared family food brings Indian kitchen risks: ASPCA lists onion, garlic, grapes, chocolate, salty food, milk and cooked bones among foods to avoid, which rules out most curries and leftovers. Change foods slowly, as PDSA advises, to avoid diarrhoea. Meals a day: 6 to 12 weeks, 4 a day; 3 to 6 months, 3 a day; 6 to 12 months, 2 a day; adult, 1 or 2 a day. Puppies, kittens, working, pregnant and older animals need different amounts: ask your vet, or use Petym's food calculator.

Which illnesses is the Kombai prone to, and how are they treated?

The conditions veterinary studies and breed surveys most often report in the Kombai. Knowing the early signs means a vet sees it sooner.

See your vet first. This is general information from veterinary sources, not a diagnosis. Only a vet who has examined your pet can say what is wrong and prescribe treatment, and this page never gives a dose. Do not give your pet human medicine. If your pet seems very unwell, go to a 24-hour vet: find one in your city.

  • Canine parvovirus

Emergency: go to a vet now

A fast-spreading virus that attacks the gut, most dangerous in puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Kombai owners in the 2023 survey named parvovirus among the breed's problems, and only 60% had vaccinated against all diseases. Veterinary Practitioner (December 2023), TANUVAS Veterinary College, Thenistudy

    Signs to watch for

    • Lethargy and loss of appetite
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhoea, often bloody
    • Weakness, belly pain and dehydration

    How a vet treats it

Cornell says a vet confirms it with a quick faecal or rectal swab test and blood tests. Care is usually in hospital: IV fluids, antibiotics against secondary infection, medicines to control vomiting, nausea and pain, and sometimes plasma transfusions or a feeding tube. Most dogs do not survive without treatment.

    Prevention

Vaccination is the most important step: keep the DHPPi course and boosters your vet sets, and keep an unvaccinated puppy away from other dogs.

  • Canine distemper

    See a vet soon

A highly contagious, often fatal virus, worst in young or unvaccinated dogs. Owners in the 2023 Kombai survey reported it alongside parvovirus. Veterinary Practitioner (December 2023), TANUVAS Veterinary College, Thenistudy

    Signs to watch for

    • Fever
    • Discharge from the eyes or nose, and coughing
    • Vomiting and diarrhoea
    • Thickened nose and paw pads
    • Later, twitching, wobbling or seizures

    How a vet treats it

Cornell says vets prefer a PCR test to detect the virus. There is no specific cure: care is supportive, with IV fluids, antibiotics for secondary infections, anti-nausea drugs and, for nerve signs, anti-seizure medication.

    Prevention

Distemper is a core vaccine for every dog, and properly vaccinated dogs are usually immune.

  • Tick fever (ehrlichiosis)

    See a vet soon

A blood infection with Ehrlichia canis, spread mainly by the brown dog tick. It is not specific to the Kombai, but in a survey of 525 dogs in four Indian cities about half carried a tick-borne infection. Merck Veterinary Manual

    Signs to watch for

    • Fever and dullness
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nosebleeds or bruising
    • Pale gums

    How a vet treats it

Merck says vets diagnose it with blood tests such as serology and PCR, and treat it with a course of antibiotics, with supportive care and sometimes a blood or platelet transfusion for bleeding.

    Prevention

Tick control as your vet advises and a daily coat check.

  • Heatstroke

Emergency: go to a vet now

No study has measured the Kombai's heat tolerance, even though it comes from hot southern Tamil Nadu. Any dog can overheat, and PDSA says nearly three in four cases happen during play or exercise. PDSA

    Signs to watch for

    • Heavy panting and fast breathing
    • Drooling or vomiting
    • Bright red or very pale gums
    • Weakness, wobbling or collapse

    How a vet treats it

PDSA says start cooling at once with cool water over the body and moving air, then go to the vet, who cools the dog further, gives fluids by drip, runs blood and urine tests and may give oxygen and medicine to protect the organs.

    Prevention

Walk early and late in summer, and give shade and water all day, as AWBI's heat circular asks.

Where the Kombai comes from, and what is on record

A farm guard from the foothills of the Western Ghats, now a registered Indian breed.

The Kombai takes its name from Kombai village in Theni district. A 2023 study by scientists at the TANUVAS veterinary college in Theni says its guarding nature made it popular in the district and in neighbouring Madurai and Virudhunagar, where farms and orchards along the foothills needed a hardy watchdog. The authors note the dog was used for hunting deer, wild boar and bison before hunting was banned.

ICAR's National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) now lists the Kombai as the sixth registered Indian dog breed, after the Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Mudhol Hound, Gaddi and Changkhi. NBAGR announced the registration after the 14th meeting of its Breed Registration Committee. Earlier, in his Mann Ki Baat address of 30 August 2020, the Prime Minister named the Kombai among fabulous Indian breeds and said the CRPF had included Kombai dogs in its squads.

What is not on record matters as much. Petym found no published Kennel Club of India standard, no study of the breed's lifespan, and no measured data on how it copes with heat, flats or being left alone. Treat confident claims on breeder websites with care.

How does a Kombai react to a pet sitter?

With suspicion at first. Plan the introduction as carefully as the trip.

The study's owners described the Kombai as aggressive towards strangers and obedient with its own family. That is exactly what a farm guard should be, and exactly what makes the first day with a sitter delicate. A sitter who walks in alone with a key is, to this dog, an intruder.

Use Petym's free meet and greet in your home, with you present. The sitter should sit, ignore the dog, and let it approach; treats from the dog's own food are thrown, not handed over, until the dog relaxes. If you can, arrange a second short visit a day or two before you leave, and let the sitter take the leash for part of a walk while you are beside them.

Tell the sitter plainly if your Kombai has snapped at visitors, guards the gate, or goes for other dogs. A sitter who knows can plan: deliveries left at the door, no guests in the home, and walks at quiet times. Keeping the dog at home with one person is usually kinder than a new house full of new smells.

Health signs a Kombai's sitter should act on

The 2023 study, based on an owner survey, says disease is less common in Kombais than in exotic breeds. That is not a measured rate, so the usual dog emergencies still apply.

  • If Vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, refusing food or sudden weakness, especially in a young dog. Owners in the study named parvovirus among the breed's problems.

Call the vet the same day and take the vaccination card. Parvovirus spreads fast and needs a vet. Veterinary Practitioner (December 2023), TANUVAS Veterinary College, Thenistudy

  • If Discharge from eyes or nose, cough, fever or twitching. Distemper was the other disease owners reported.

Call the vet and keep the dog away from other dogs until it has been seen. Veterinary Practitioner (December 2023), TANUVAS Veterinary College, Thenistudy

  • If Fever, dullness or pale gums after ticks were found. In a survey of 525 dogs in four Indian cities, about half carried a tick-borne infection.

Call the vet the same day and say ticks were found. Parasites & Vectors (2011)study

  • If Heavy panting, drooling, a racing heart or collapse on a hot day.

Heatstroke: move the dog somewhere cool, pour cool water over it, use a fan, and go to the vet at once. Animal Welfare Board of India

  • If A bite or cut after a scuffle with another dog on the walk.

Clean it if the dog allows, tell the owner, and have a vet check any bite, however small.

Feeding a Kombai while you are away

Many Kombais eat home food. The sitter's job is to keep it exactly the same.

Do

  • Write out the recipe, the portion and the times, whether it is rice and meat, curd rice or a commercial food.
  • Keep the same food for the whole stay: a sudden change is a common cause of diarrhoea. PDSA
  • Keep treats under about 10% of the day's calories. WSAVA
  • Feed the dog in its own spot, away from other animals and from the sitter's own meal.

Questions owners ask

Is the Kombai a recognised Indian breed?

Yes. ICAR-NBAGR lists the Kombai as the sixth registered Indian dog breed, with Tamil Nadu as its home tract, after its Breed Registration Committee approved it; Down To Earth reported the registration in August 2026. Petym did not find a published Kennel Club of India standard for the breed, and it is not listed by the FCI.

Is a Kombai dangerous with strangers?

It can be wary and defensive. A 2023 study of Kombais in Theni district describes them as aggressive towards strangers and obedient with their owners. Introduce a sitter at home with you present, ideally more than once, keep the dog leashed outside, and keep visitors away while you travel.

Can a Kombai be left alone at home?

No study has looked at this. PDSA's general advice is that dogs should not be left alone for more than four hours at a time. A guarding dog alone in a flat may bark at every sound in the corridor, so arrange a sitter or a midday walk on long days.

How big does a Kombai get?

In a 2023 study of adult dogs in Theni, males averaged about 60 cm at the withers and 22.4 kg, and females about 56 cm and 21.7 kg. The authors class it as a mid-sized hound, a little shorter than the Rajapalayam.

Does a Kombai handle Indian heat?

It comes from hot southern Tamil Nadu, and the 2020 Mann Ki Baat address said Indian breeds are better adapted to the Indian environment. No study has measured its heat tolerance, though, and any dog can get heatstroke. Walk early and late and give shade and water all day.

What do Kombai dogs eat?

Most owners in the 2023 survey shared the family's food rather than cooking for the dog, and kennels fed meat regularly. Whatever your dog eats, write it down for the sitter and keep it unchanged, and leave out onion, garlic, grapes, chocolate and cooked bones.

Do Kombais need vaccines if they are hardy?

Yes. Owners in the 2023 study reported parvovirus and distemper in their dogs, and only 60% had vaccinated against all the diseases. Keep the DHPPi and rabies vaccines your vet recommends up to date, and leave the card with the sitter.
