Pembroke Welsh Corgi care in India: shedding, heat, weight and notes for your sitter
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
A Corgi usually settles quickly with a sitter: the FCI standard calls it outgoing and friendly, never nervous or aggressive. The sitter's work is a thick double coat that sheds every day, a dog AKC says needs a job, and food control, since AKC notes some dogs gain weight easily. In summer, walks happen only in the cool hours.
AKC rates the breed 4 of 5 for barking and 5 of 5 for protectiveness, so expect it to announce every delivery in a flat. Brain games and two good walks help.

Where does the Pembroke Welsh Corgi come from?
The Pembroke is named for the county of Pembroke in south Wales. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America cites Clifford Hubbard, an authority on Welsh dogs, who held that the breed certainly dated back to the early twelfth century and possibly to the reign of Hywel Dda in the tenth. The Royal Kennel Club calls it the traditional droving dog of Wales.
Corgis drove cattle by nipping at their heels, low to the ground and quick enough to dodge a kick. The Kennel Club in Britain granted challenge certificates in 1928 and recognised the Pembroke and the Cardigan as separate breeds in 1934. A Pembroke bought for Princess Elizabeth in 1933 drew wide attention to the breed, and The Royal Kennel Club links much of its popularity to royal patronage under King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.
The FCI standard still lists its use as a sheepdog and describes a bold, workmanlike dog, outgoing and friendly, never nervous or aggressive.
How did the Pembroke Welsh Corgi come to India?
No source we found records when or how the Pembroke Welsh Corgi reached India; its arrival is not documented. It lives here as a companion dog, and the Kennel Club of India registers pedigree dogs of recognised breeds through its single-dog and litter forms.
Two things shape a Corgi's life in India. Its dense double coat sheds more in late spring and early summer, just as the heat arrives, and the AKC tells owners to avoid extreme heat and always give cool, fresh water after exercise. Ticks are the other: in a survey of 525 dogs across four Indian cities, ticks were found on 53%, and a dense coat close to the ground hides them well.
What care does a Pembroke Welsh Corgi need?
The three things that shape a good day for this breed.
Exercise
Up to 1 hour a day, says The Royal Kennel Club. The AKC says Corgis do well on long walks or slow jogs but cannot keep up beside a bicycle, and that they are happiest with a job, so add training games and food puzzles. The Royal Kennel Club
Grooming
More than once a week (The Royal Kennel Club), and daily in the shedding season with a comb and slicker brush. Do not shave it: the Canadian Kennel Club says shaving a double-coated dog does not help it cool off. American Kennel Club
Training
The AKC says the breed thrives on having a job and may try to herd its people, children included. Redirect nipping at heels to a toy or a sit, and use part of each meal as training rewards so food earns work. Canadian Kennel Club (The Dish, June 2018)
How much should a Pembroke Welsh Corgi eat?
Daily calories for a healthy, neutered adult Pembroke Welsh Corgi, worked out from its weight with the formula vets use (70 x weight in kg to the power 0.75, then AAHA's factor for a neutered adult). Divide by the kcal per kg on your food's pack for grams a day, and adjust by body shape.
| Resting need (kcal a day) | Neutered adult (kcal a day) | |
|---|---|---|
| 9 kg AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) | 360 | 510 to 580 |
| 10.5 kg | 410 | 570 to 650 |
| 12 kg | 450 | 630 to 720 |
Feed a complete and balanced food suited to the dog's age, with puppy food until adulthood, as the Merck Veterinary Manual advises. The AKC notes that some Corgis are prone to getting overweight, so measure every meal and keep treats under about 10% of daily calories, as WSAVA suggests. A Corgi will beg for roti, biscuits and fried snacks; skip them. Never give onion or garlic, grapes, raisins or tamarind, chocolate, or anything sweetened with xylitol. Use the energy table below as a starting point and adjust with your vet so you can feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat. Meals a day: 6 to 12 weeks, 4 a day; 3 to 6 months, 3 a day; 6 to 12 months, 2 a day; adult, 2 a day. Puppies, kittens, working, pregnant and older animals need different amounts: ask your vet, or use Petym's food calculator.
Which illnesses is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi prone to, and how are they treated?
The conditions veterinary studies and breed surveys most often report in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Knowing the early signs means a vet sees it sooner.
See your vet first. This is general information from veterinary sources, not a diagnosis. Only a vet who has examined your pet can say what is wrong and prescribe treatment, and this page never gives a dose. Do not give your pet human medicine. If your pet seems very unwell, go to a 24-hour vet: find one in your city.
Degenerative myelopathy
See a vet soonA slow, progressive disease of the spinal cord that gradually takes away the use of the legs. Science for Animal Welfare says Corgis carry a mutation in the SOD1 gene behind it, and a study of affected Pembrokes found it mainly in older dogs. Science for Animal Welfare (formerly UFAW)
Signs to watch for
- Wobbling of the back legs, usually from around 11 years
- Scuffing or dragging the back feet
- Weakness spreading to paralysis, later reaching the front legs
How a vet treats it
A vet makes a working diagnosis by ruling out other causes with blood tests, imaging and spinal fluid analysis; it can only be confirmed after death. Science for Animal Welfare says there is no effective treatment, but physiotherapy can keep some dogs mobile for longer and a hind-limb cart can help for a time.
Prevention
A DNA test identifies at-risk dogs and carriers; test both parents before breeding or buying.
Hip dysplasia
See a vet soonA loose hip joint that wears into arthritis. The Royal Kennel Club recommends hip scoring for Pembrokes before breeding, and the AKC lists it for the breed. The Royal Kennel Club
Signs to watch for
- Stiffness after rest
- A bunny-hopping gait
- Reluctance to jump or climb stairs
How a vet treats it
A vet diagnoses it with hip x-rays and a hands-on check. ACVS says keeping the dog lean is the most effective long-term approach, with low-impact exercise, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory pain relief prescribed by the vet with blood test monitoring, and surgery in some dogs.
Prevention
Scored parents and a lean dog throughout life.
Obesity
Ask at a routine checkThe AKC says some Corgis are prone to getting overweight, and the large UK heat study found dogs at or above their breed's average weight had higher odds of heat-related illness. American Kennel Club
Signs to watch for
- Ribs hard to feel under the fat
- No visible waist from above
- Tiring sooner on walks and panting more
How a vet treats it
Your vet scores body condition on the WSAVA 9-point scale, sets a target weight and a measured diet, and rechecks the weight regularly.
Prevention
Measured meals, treats under about 10% of daily calories and daily exercise.
Heatstroke
Emergency: go to a vet nowA dense double coat and a love of chasing balls are a risky mix in Indian summers. In the UK heat study, exercise caused most cases, and heavier dogs had higher odds. PDSA
Signs to watch for
- Heavy panting that does not settle
- Drooling, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Weakness, wobbling or collapse
How a vet treats it
First aid at once: a cool place, cool water over the body away from the nose and mouth, a breeze, then the vet. PDSA says vets cool the dog with cold water, fans and, if needed, a fluid drip, and severe cases may need oxygen, medication or anaesthesia.
Prevention
Walk before sunrise and after dark, test the ground with your palm for seven seconds, keep the dog lean and give water after every walk.
How a Corgi gets on with a sitter
Usually very well. Expect it to supervise everyone, including the sitter.
The FCI standard describes the Pembroke as bold, workmanlike, outgoing and friendly, never nervous or aggressive, and AKC rates it 4 of 5 for openness to strangers and 5 of 5 for affection with family. It was bred, The Royal Kennel Club says, as the traditional droving dog of Wales. AKC adds that it thrives on having a job and may even herd its people, children included.
So a sitter should expect a confident little dog that follows them around, barks at the door and tries to round up running children. That is normal herding behaviour, not aggression. Redirect it calmly to a toy or a sit, and keep visiting children from running circles around it.
On alone time, PDSA's general advice for any dog is no more than 4 hours at a stretch. A bored Corgi barks, and AKC rates the breed 4 of 5 for barking, which carries in a housing society. Give it work: short training sessions, a food puzzle with part of a meal, and a walk with time to sniff.
Keeping a Corgi at a healthy weight
AKC notes some dogs are prone to getting overweight, and extra weight raised heat-illness odds in a large UK study.
Do
- Measure every meal with the owner's cup or scale, at the owner's times.
- Count treats: WSAVA suggests under about 10% of daily calories, with low-calorie choices such as carrot or apple. WSAVA
- Use part of a meal as training rewards, so food earns work. American Kennel Club
- Use a ramp or lift the dog onto sofas and into cars if the owner does, so it is not jumping down.
Don’t
- Do not share chapati with ghee, biscuits, mithai or fried snacks, however hard it stares.
- Do not feed chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic or xylitol. ASPCA Animal Poison Control
- Do not change the food during the stay; a sudden change can cause diarrhoea. PDSA
- Do not take it jogging beside a bicycle: AKC says its short legs will not keep up. American Kennel Club
Heat, shedding and the monsoon
AKC tells Corgi owners to avoid extreme heat and to always provide cool, fresh water after exercise. There is no breed-level heatstroke figure, but the large UK study of heat-related illness found exercise caused most cases and dogs at or above their breed's average weight had higher odds. A plump Corgi chasing a ball on a hot terrace is the risk. In Indian summers, walk before sunrise and after dark, test the road with the back of a hand for seven seconds first, and play indoors in the hot hours.
The coat sheds every day and more in late spring and early summer, AKC says, which in India means just as the heat arrives. A daily once-over with a comb and slicker brush removes a lot of it, and AKC says a rake helps strip out the undercoat in the shedding season. Do not shave it: the Canadian Kennel Club says shaving a double-coated dog does not help it cool off.
In the monsoon, towel the low belly, chest and feet after every wet walk; they collect mud and water. Ticks are common in India: in a survey of 525 dogs in four Indian cities, ticks were found on 53%. Part the dense coat to check the ears, neck, armpits and between the toes.
Corgi health signs a sitter should report
Spot, note and tell the owner; call the vet for anything sudden or painful.
If A slowly worsening wobble or dragging of the back feet in an older dog. Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive spinal cord disease frequently found in Pembroke Welsh Corgis; in one study of affected Corgis the mean age was 12.7 years.
Not an emergency, but tell the owner so the vet can examine the dog. Help on stairs and slippery floors. Veterinary Pathology (2015)study
If Sudden back pain, a hunched back, yelping when picked up, or wobbly back legs that appear quickly.
Keep the dog still and quiet and call the vet the same day. American College of Veterinary Surgeons
If Stiffness after rest or a bunny-hop gait. AKC lists hip dysplasia, and The Royal Kennel Club recommends hip testing before breeding.
Shorter walks on soft ground, no jumping, and a note for the vet. The Royal Kennel Club
If A cloudy eye, squinting or bumping into things. AKC lists eye disease for the breed.
Tell the owner; a red, painful eye needs the vet the same day. American Kennel Club
If Heavy panting that does not settle, drooling, wobbling or collapse after a walk in the heat.
Heatstroke: move the dog somewhere cool, pour cool water over its body, use a fan, and go to the vet at once. PDSA
A Corgi's daily walk and work, step by step
Petym’s working from the official rules, no government publishes a total.
Petym's suggested routine for a sitter in the hot months: exercise for the body and a job for the brain.
Before sunrise
Harness and lead on, water bottle in the bag. Check the road with the back of a hand for seven seconds. The Royal Kennel Club
Sniff and stroll
Fifteen minutes at the dog's pace on grass or soil, with time to sniff.
A brisk loop
Ten to fifteen minutes at a steady walk; AKC says Corgis do well on long walks or slow jogs, but not beside a bicycle. American Kennel Club
Training stop
A few sits, downs, waits and recalls on a long line in a quiet corner, with pieces of the day's food.
Home and water
Cool, fresh water straight after exercise, as AKC advises, and rest in the coolest room. American Kennel Club
Comb and check
A quick comb to lift shed hair, then a tick check and a wipe of the belly and feet.

Questions owners ask
Can a Corgi live in Indian heat?
- With care. AKC advises avoiding extreme heat and giving cool water after exercise, and a large UK study found exercise and extra weight raised the odds of heat-related illness. Walk before sunrise and after dark, keep the dog lean, and never shave its double coat.
Do Corgis shed a lot?
- Yes. AKC rates shedding 4 of 5 and says the double coat sheds a fair amount daily, and more in late spring and early summer. A daily once-over with a comb and slicker brush, and an undercoat rake in the shedding season, keep it under control.
How long can a Corgi be left alone?
- PDSA's general advice is no more than 4 hours at a time for any dog. Corgis are active herding dogs that AKC rates 4 of 5 for barking, so a bored one can be noisy in a flat. On long days, use a sitter, day care or a midday walk.
Why does my Corgi try to herd people?
- It is herding behaviour. AKC says Corgis were bred to herd cattle and may herd their people, including children. Redirect calmly to a toy or a sit, give it training and walks as its job, and stop children running circles around it.
What health problems do Corgis have?
- AKC lists hip dysplasia and eye disease, and degenerative myelopathy, a progressive spinal cord disease, is frequently found in Pembroke Welsh Corgis, usually in older dogs. Talk to your vet about your dog.
Is a Corgi good for a flat in India?
- It can be. The Royal Kennel Club lists a small house and up to an hour of exercise a day, and AKC rates the breed 4 of 5 for adaptability. The challenges in a flat are barking, which AKC rates 4 of 5, and daily shedding. Two cool-hour walks and training games help with both.
How do I stop my Corgi getting fat?
- Measure meals, count treats (WSAVA suggests under about 10% of daily calories), use part of the meal for training, and keep human food away. AKC notes some dogs are prone to getting overweight. Ask your vet for your dog's ideal weight.
