How hot is too hot to walk my dog?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

No veterinary body sets one safe air temperature, because sun, humidity, the ground and the dog all change the risk. Use two checks: if the road is too hot for the back of your hand for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws; and in Indian summer, walk only at dawn or late evening, briefly.

Exercise, not hot cars, sets off most heatstroke in dogs. On heat wave days, or with a flat-faced, heavy, old or thick-coated dog, keep outings to short toilet breaks on grass or shade and play indoors instead. Panting that will not settle means stop, cool and call a vet.

Is there a temperature at which I should not walk my dog?

Not one number that the vet bodies agree on. The risk depends on more than the air temperature.

The Royal Kennel Club, PDSA and RSPCA all advise against walking in the hottest part of the day and suggest early morning or evening, but none of them publishes a cut-off temperature, and Petym does not invent one. What raises the risk is a mix of things: direct sun, humidity, still air, the surface underfoot, how hard the dog is working, and the dog itself.

India does publish heat warnings. IMD declares a heat wave in the plains when the maximum is at least 40 degrees C and well above normal, or 45 degrees C or more outright, and its colour-coded warnings are on mausam.imd.gov.in for the next five days. IMD and NDMA advise people to stay out of the sun from 12 noon to 3 pm. On those days, treat midday walks as off for your dog too.

How do I check whether it is safe to walk right now?

  • The seven-second test: press the back of your hand on the road or pavement for seven seconds. If it is too painful for your hand, it is too painful for your dog's paws. The Royal Kennel Club
  • Look at the surface: dark, dense surfaces such as tar soak up and hold heat; grass stays cooler. The Royal Kennel Club
  • Check the hour and the forecast. Early morning and evening are cooler; IMD's heat wave warning for your district tells you which days to keep walks to toilet breaks. India Meteorological Department
  • Think about humidity. IMD notes that high humidity worsens the effect of heat because sweat evaporates more slowly, so a humid day can be more dangerous than the thermometer suggests. India Meteorological Department
  • Know your dog. Flat-faced, heavy, giant, thick-coated, very young and very old dogs are most at risk. PDSA
  • Carry water and a bowl, plan a shaded route, and turn back early. PDSA

How much hotter is the road than the air?

Much hotter, in afternoon sun. One measured study shows the gap.

In a 2022 study in Texas, a suburban street was surveyed at 30 points in the morning and afternoon. The air ranged from about 25.6 degrees C in the morning to 35.6 degrees C in the afternoon, but ground surfaces passed 65.6 degrees C in the afternoon surveys. Tar was the hottest by median temperature, followed by chip seal, concrete and grass. On a nature trail nearby, brown sand reached 52.1 degrees C at 4 pm with the air at about 33 degrees.

Indian streets are mostly tar and concrete, and summer air is often hotter than in that study. The lesson is not a precise figure but a habit: test the ground, keep to grass and shade, and walk when the sun is low.

Why is a hot walk more dangerous than a hot car?

A VetCompass study of UK vet records found 1,259 heat-related illness events in a year. Exercise set off 74.2% of them, hot surroundings 12.9% and confinement in a vehicle 5.2%. Young male dogs had greater odds of heatstroke from exercise, and flat-faced dogs had greater odds of every type. The authors' conclusion: exercise affects more dogs, and kills more dogs, than a hot car. RSPCA puts it as dogs being far more likely to suffer heat-related illness on hot walks than in hot cars.

That was in the UK, with milder summers than ours. A dog that keeps running after a ball or keeps pace with a cycle will not stop on its own when it is overheating, so the owner has to stop it.

What are the signs I should stop the walk?

Stop. Move into shade, offer water, wet the coat and head home slowly, or carry a small dog. PDSA

  • If Thick drool, bright red or pale gums, vomiting, wobbling or collapse

  • If Limping, whimpering, licking the paws; pads look red, swollen or blistered

Get the dog off the hot surface and contact your vet promptly. The Royal Kennel Club

How do I exercise my dog when it is too hot to go out?

Play and training indoors, a food puzzle, a sniff game with treats hidden around the room, or a frozen treat in a toy all use energy without heat. PDSA reminds owners that frozen treats alone will not prevent overheating, so pair them with a cool room and water. If you work long days in summer, a dog walker who goes at dawn and dusk is safer than a midday walk; Petym's dog walk planner helps you plan the length.

Questions owners ask

What time should I walk my dog in Indian summer?

Early morning before the sun is high, and after sunset once the ground has cooled. IMD and NDMA advise staying out of the sun from 12 noon to 3 pm; on heat wave days keep any daytime outing to a short toilet break on grass or in shade.

Is 35 degrees too hot to walk a dog?

No vet body publishes a cut-off, but at 35 degrees C in sun the road can be far hotter: one study measured street surfaces above 65 degrees C with air at about 35.6 degrees. Walk only at dawn or after dark at that heat, briefly, after the seven-second hand test.

Can hot roads burn my dog's paws?

Yes. Dark surfaces such as tar absorb and hold heat. If the back of your hand cannot stay on the road for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws. Signs of a burn are limping, whimpering and red, swollen or blistered pads: take the dog off the surface and contact your vet.

Should I buy dog shoes for summer?

Booties can protect pads on a surface you cannot avoid, but they do nothing for heatstroke, which is the bigger danger and is mostly set off by exercise. Changing the time of the walk and the route matters more than any gear. Introduce booties slowly if you use them.

Do Indie dogs cope better with heat?

Many Indies have short coats and live outdoors in Indian summers, but no dog is immune. The UK research found that young male dogs had higher odds of heatstroke from exercise, whatever the breed. Use the same rules for an Indie: dawn and dusk walks, water, shade and no running in the heat.
