Which dog breeds suit an apartment in India?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
A dog suits a flat when its energy, noise and heat needs fit the space, not just its size. The Royal Kennel Club rates the Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Pug, Maltese, toy Poodle, Pomeranian and French Bulldog as suited to a flat. A calm adult Indie also does well. High-drive working breeds and huskies struggle in small homes.
Your society cannot ban a dog through its bylaws, AWBI's advisory says, but you must keep it leashed in common areas and clean up after it. Plan walks, company and cooling before you choose.
Which breeds are rated for a flat?
From The Royal Kennel Club's breed information, with the main thing to plan for in an Indian flat.
| Daily exercise | Plan for | |
|---|---|---|
| Lhasa Apso The Royal Kennel Club | Up to 1 hour | Daily grooming; a watchdog bark |
| Shih Tzu The Royal Kennel Club | Up to 1 hour | Daily grooming; flat face in summer |
| Pug The Royal Kennel Club | Up to 1 hour | Strict heat care; thrives on company |
| Toy Poodle The Royal Kennel Club (UK) | Up to 1 hour | Regular coat care |
| Maltese The Royal Kennel Club (UK) | Up to 30 minutes | Long coat; loves attention |
| Pomeranian American Kennel Club | Up to 30 minutes | AKC rates it high for barking |
| Chihuahua The Royal Kennel Club (UK) | Up to 30 minutes | Fragile; careful with children |
| French Bulldog The Royal Kennel Club (UK) | Up to 1 hour | Low heat tolerance |
The Royal Kennel Club rates breeds for UK homes. Add Indian heat: the flat-faced dogs on this list need a room that stays cool in a power cut.
Does a big dog need a big house?
Not always. Energy and noise decide more than size.
The Royal Kennel Club gives the Saint Bernard up to 1 hour of exercise a day, less than many owners expect for a dog that size, while it rates the Border Collie for a small house but says it needs more than 2 hours a day and has to be kept engaged. A collie in a 2BHK with one short walk will be harder to live with than a calm big dog with two good walks.
Size still matters in a flat in other ways: lifts, stairs during power cuts, and how strong a dog is on a lead in a crowded society lane. Giant breeds also carry the highest heat risk: dogs over 50 kg had about 3.4 times the odds of heat-related illness of dogs under 10 kg in UK vet records.
A calm adult Indie is often a good flat dog. The INDog Project describes a medium, low-maintenance dog suited to tropical weather; it is alert and social, so it needs walks and company, but not the hours a working breed does.
What makes a dog easy to live with in a flat?
Do
- Two walks a day in the cool hours, with time to sniff, whatever the breed. Animals (2020)study
- A calm, cool resting spot of its own, away from the main door. RSPCA NSW
- Company: PDSA advises no dog be left alone for more than about four hours at a time. PDSA
- Reward quiet, calm behaviour and teach what to do instead of barking. American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior
- A lead in lifts and common areas, and picking up after your dog. Animal Welfare Board of India
Don’t
- Pick a husky for a hot flat. AKC rates the breed at the top of its scale for barking and howling, and The Royal Kennel Club wants more than 2 hours of exercise a day. American Kennel Club
- Leave a flat-faced dog alone in a room that heats up when the power goes. PDSA
- Use bark or shock collars. AVSAB advises against tools that work through pain. American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior
- Assume a small dog will be quiet: some toy breeds bark a lot. American Kennel Club
Can my housing society stop me keeping a dog in my flat?
AWBI's 2015 advisory to housing societies says residents' associations cannot ban pets through bylaws, cannot ban pets from lifts or charge for using them, and that pets should be leashed in common areas. Barking alone cannot justify a ban. The advisory also expects owners to keep their dogs clean, leashed and picked up after.
If you rent, your landlord's agreement is a separate matter. Read it before you bring a dog home, and agree terms in writing. Petym's pages on pets in housing societies and in rented homes go through both.

Questions owners ask
Can a Labrador live in a flat in India?
- Yes, if it gets its exercise. The Royal Kennel Club says Labradors need more than 2 hours a day, which in India means early morning and late evening walks. A Labrador that gets this is often calm indoors; one that does not will chew, jump and bark in a small space.
Can a German Shepherd live in an apartment?
- It can, but it is demanding. The Royal Kennel Club says the breed needs more than 2 hours of exercise a day, and it was bred to work with a handler. In a flat it needs long daily walks, training and mental work, and a lead you can hold in common areas.
Which small dog barks the least?
- Kennel clubs rate breeds, but every dog is different. AKC rates the Pomeranian high for barking, while the Lhasa Apso was bred as a companion and watchdog, so expect it to alert. Training, exercise and not leaving a dog alone for long matter more than breed for barking.
Can I keep a dog in a 1BHK?
- Yes, with the right dog. A calm small or medium dog, or a quiet adult Indie, can live well in a 1BHK if it gets two walks a day, company and a cool place to rest. Space inside matters less than what you do outside it.
Do I need permission from my society to keep a dog?
- AWBI's advisory says residents' associations cannot ban pets through bylaws, but owners must keep dogs leashed in common areas and clean up after them. Some cities also require a pet dog licence from the corporation. Check your city's rules on Petym's pet registration page.
