Can humans catch leptospirosis from dogs?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Yes, it is possible. Leptospirosis spreads through the urine of infected animals, and an infected dog can pass the bacteria in its urine. But the 2023 ACVIM consensus says the risk from pet dogs appears low, especially with basic precautions. In India, the Health Ministry names rats, mice and other rodents as the usual source.

If your dog has leptospirosis, wear gloves to clean up urine, wash your hands and keep children away from it. If you get a fever, headache or muscle pain after contact with a sick dog's urine or floodwater, see a doctor promptly and tell them about the exposure.

When should you see a doctor?

Do not wait to see if it passes. Early diagnosis and treatment matter, and only a doctor can decide on them.

  • If Fever, headache, muscle aches or weakness after contact with a sick dog's urine, floodwater or rat-infested areas

See a doctor promptly and say what you were exposed to. The Health Ministry warns that leptospirosis looks like malaria and dengue at first. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

  • If Yellow eyes or skin, passing little or no urine, bleeding, or signs of meningeal irritation

Get medical care urgently. These are among the signs in the Health Ministry's leptospirosis case definition. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

  • If Your dog has just been diagnosed and you feel well

Take the precautions below. Symptoms in people usually start 2 to 30 days after contact, so see a doctor if you become unwell in that time. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • If A child in the house touched the sick dog's urine

Tell your family doctor about the dog's diagnosis now, rather than waiting for symptoms. The one documented dog to person case ACVIM describes was a child in the household. ACVIM (Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2023)study

How does leptospirosis pass from a dog to a person?

Through urine. The bacteria get in through cuts and broken skin or from contaminated water, soil or food.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis, a disease that can pass between animals and people. The US CDC says people catch it through contact with water or soil containing the urine or body fluids of infected animals, by touching an infected animal's body fluids, or from contaminated food or water. It advises covering cuts and scratches with waterproof dressings. It is rare for people to pass leptospirosis to other people.

Dogs catch it the same way, most often from water contaminated with urine, such as puddles and ponds, according to Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center. ACVIM notes that an infected dog usually does not start passing the bacteria in its urine until 7 to 10 days after infection.

How long a dog stays infectious is where sources differ. The Merck Veterinary Manual says a dog that becomes a carrier may shed the bacteria in its urine for months or even years. The CDC says a dog that is not fully treated may shed them for up to 3 months. Both point the same way: finish the treatment your vet prescribes and keep up the precautions until your vet says they can stop.

How likely is it that my dog will give it to me?

Low, according to the veterinary consensus, and much lower than the risk from rats and floodwater in an Indian monsoon.

The 2023 consensus statement of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine reviewed the evidence. It found that the few reports suggesting transmission from pet dogs to people had not been confirmed with molecular methods, described one documented case of a sick dog passing it to a child in the household, likely through handling contaminated urine, and noted that surveys found no antibodies in vets and veterinary students. Its conclusion: the risk appears low, especially when basic precautions are taken, and treated dogs returned home are a low risk to the family.

In India the bigger exposure is the environment. The Health Ministry's advisory of 23 June 2026 says the disease is spread through the urine of infected rats, mice and other rodents, and that cases rise in the monsoon in endemic states. NCDC's programme covers 181 districts in 12 states and 2 union territories, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and West Bengal.

How do you protect your family if your dog has leptospirosis?

Simple hygiene does most of the work, from the day of diagnosis until your vet says the risk has passed.

How does leptospirosis compare in people and dogs?

The same bacteria, the same routes in, and different prevention.

Should your dog have the leptospirosis vaccine?

Ask your vet before the monsoon. The Health Ministry's 2026 advisory asks pet owners to consider it.

Vaccinating dogs also lowers the risk of people being exposed, Cornell notes. The vaccines cover the four most common types of Leptospira but not every strain, so a vaccinated dog can still be infected. Merck says it is usually recommended every year. WSAVA's 2024 guidelines treat it as core wherever the disease occurs and a suitable vaccine is available. Petym's glossary page on leptospirosis covers the vaccine and the signs in dogs in more depth, and the monsoon guide covers floodwater, paws and drying off after walks.

Questions owners ask

Is leptospirosis contagious from person to person?

Rarely. The US CDC says it is rare for people to spread leptospirosis to other people. It spreads mainly through the urine of infected animals, in India most often rats, mice and other rodents, and through water and soil contaminated with that urine, especially during the monsoon.

How long is a dog with leptospirosis infectious?

Sources differ. The CDC says a dog that is not fully treated may shed the bacteria in its urine for up to 3 months; the Merck Veterinary Manual says a carrier dog may shed them for months or even years. Finish the treatment your vet prescribes and keep up gloves and handwashing until your vet says otherwise.

What are the symptoms of leptospirosis in humans?

Fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, vomiting and diarrhoea, and in serious cases yellow skin and eyes, little or no urine, or bleeding. Some people have no symptoms. Signs usually begin 2 to 30 days after exposure. See a doctor and mention any contact with animal urine or floodwater.

Can a vaccinated dog still give me leptospirosis?

It is possible but less likely. The dog vaccines cover the four most common types of Leptospira, not all strains, so a vaccinated dog can still be infected. Vaccination lowers the risk to the dog and, Cornell notes, the risk of people being exposed. Keep up the yearly booster your vet advises.

Is it safe to keep my dog at home with children if it has leptospirosis?

Usually yes, with care. The 2023 ACVIM consensus says treated dogs at home are a low risk to the household. Keep children away from the dog's urine, clean up with gloves, wash hands, and tell your family doctor about the diagnosis. Your vet will tell you how long precautions should last.
