Taking a dog or cat from India to Australia
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
There is no direct route. India is not on Australia's list of approved countries, so a dog or cat must first live in an approved country, such as the UAE, the UK, Canada or the USA, for at least 180 consecutive days, with every vaccine and test done there (DAFF).
It then flies as cargo straight to Melbourne and stays at least 30 days in quarantine at Mickleham, or at least 10 if an official vet in that country verified its identity before the rabies blood test. DAFF's site does not answer automated checkers, so Petym read each DAFF page in a web-archive capture (DAFF, checked 21 October 2026); confirm the rules with DAFF before you book.
Australia's rules for a pet that starts in India
| What | The rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| India's status | Not an approved country: "If your country is not in this list, it means it is not approved." | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| First step | Live in an approved country for at least 180 consecutive days immediately before export to Australia. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Vaccines given in India | Not accepted: all testing and vaccination must take place in an approved country. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Approved countries (examples) | The UAE, the UK, Canada and the USA (excluding Guam and Hawaii), among many others. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Microchip | ISO-compliant; numbers starting with 999 are not accepted. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Rabies vaccine | Given when the pet is at least 84 days old, and valid without a break up to the day of export. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |

| Import permit | Required: AUD 626 for the first animal and AUD 299 for each extra one in the same consignment. Most are issued in 20 to 40 business days; it can take up to 123. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Arrival | Directly into Melbourne International airport, as manifested cargo in an IATA-approved crate; no domestic transfers. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Quarantine | At least 30 days at the Mickleham facility; at least 10 if the pet's identity was verified by the authority before the titre test. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Quarantine fees | From 1 July 2026: AUD 282 to reserve, AUD 1,132 on importation and AUD 56 a day, per animal. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Other tests for dogs | Leptospirosis vaccination or a test, a Brucella canis test if the dog is not desexed, and a Leishmania infantum test. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
| Cats | The same core steps; flea and tick treatment starts at least 21 days before export. Bengal cats are banned from 1 March 2026. | Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) |
Why is there no direct route from India to Australia?
Australia's rabies rules recognise only approved countries, and India is not one, so your pet has to live in one of them first.
DAFF's FAQ says a pet from a non-approved country may still come, but only after at least 180 consecutive days of continuous residence in an approved country, meeting every condition for that country, and it does not accept a rabies vaccine given in a non-approved country.
So the journey starts with a move to an approved country under that country's own rules, and the Australian steps begin there. Your pet still needs the AQCS export certificate to leave India, valid for 10 days.
DAFF's website does not answer automated checkers, so Petym read each DAFF page in a web-archive capture made on 21 October 2026 (the heat warning in an older copy of 2 September 2026). Rules change: confirm each step on DAFF's website or with DAFF before you book a flight.
Which approved country should your pet live in before Australia?
Any approved country with a health certificate agreed with DAFF works, the Bahamas and the Seychelles, for example, have none, and these are the four Petym covers from India. Every vaccine and test is done there, and a pet quarantined on arrival starts its 180 days only when it is released.
Group 3
The UAE
No extra Australian test. DAFF says its rules for pets in Middle Eastern countries have not changed; if the conflict affects you, call 1800 900 090 or email [email protected]. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Group 3
The UK
No extra Australian test. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Group 3, not Guam or Hawaii
The USA
Dogs also need full canine influenza (CIV) vaccination, with the first course finished at least 14 days before export. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Group 3
Canada
Dogs need CIV vaccination, or 10 days isolated from other dogs, a negative PCR swab within 7 days of export and an exam within 48 hours of export. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Two countries
Starting in one, leaving from another
Possible if the exporting country's official vet agrees: for example the rabies vaccine, identity check and blood test in one approved country, and export from another. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
What do RNATT, BICON and Australia's other import terms mean?
DAFF's guides use their own words for each step; these are the ones an owner moving a pet from India meets first.
- Approved country
- A country Australia accepts cats and dogs from. India is not one: “If your country is not in this list, it means it is not approved.” Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
- Group 3 country
- DAFF's group for approved countries that includes the UAE, the UK, Canada and the USA (not Guam or Hawaii). Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
- RNATT
- The rabies blood test: FAVN or RFFIT, passing at 0.5 IU/ml or more, sampled between 12 months and 180 days before export. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
- Identity check
- A separate check of your pet's identity by an official vet employed by the approved country's government, before the RNATT sample. It earns the 10-day quarantine. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
- BICON
- DAFF's import system, where you apply for the permit as soon as the RNATT declaration is signed. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
- OK to Forward
- The request your airline sends DAFF; DAFF must approve it before your pet's departure. DAFF
- Mickleham
- The post entry quarantine facility near Melbourne where every imported cat and dog stays at least 10 or 30 days. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
When does each step for Australia fall, counted back from the day your pet leaves?
Count back from the export date (DAFF counts the day of a treatment as day 0). These are the Group 3 dog rules, with cat differences in brackets.
7 months or more before export
Start preparing in the approved country: DAFF's recommendation for Group 3 countries. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
At least 180 days before export
Check the ISO microchip and, for the 10-day quarantine, have an official government vet verify your pet's identity, before, and not at the same visit as, the RNATT blood sample. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
3 to 4 weeks after the rabies vaccine
The RNATT blood sample is taken (sooner for a dog vaccinated regularly). Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
12 months to 180 days before export
The RNATT sample must fall in this window. Export comes no sooner than 180 days after the sample reaches the laboratory; the test is valid 12 months from the blood draw. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Right after the RNATT declaration
Apply for the import permit in BICON. Most are issued in 20 to 40 business days; some take up to 123. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Once the permit is issued
Book Mickleham, then the flight. Your airline sends DAFF an “OK to Forward” request, which DAFF must approve before departure. DAFF
12 months to 14 days before export
The last leptospirosis (Canicola) vaccine or booster, or a negative test within 45 days of export instead. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Within 45 days of export
The Leishmania infantum test, a Brucella canis test if the dog is not desexed, and the first of two worming treatments at least 14 days apart. (Cats: the worming only.) Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
At least 30 days before export (cats: 21)
Start the flea and tick treatment and keep it going. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Within 5 days of export
The second worming treatment, the final vet check and the official vet's endorsement of the health certificate. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
Arrival day
Straight into Melbourne. Mickleham accepts arrivals 05:00 to 14:30 on Monday, Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday and 05:00 to 21:00 Wednesday to Friday, and emails you within 24 hours. DAFF
Day 10 or day 30 of quarantine
Collect your pet and its crate between 10:00 and 12:00 on the release date. DAFF
How much do the permit and Mickleham quarantine cost from 1 July 2026?
DAFF estimates AUD 3,114 for one pet with a 10-day stay and AUD 4,234 with 30 days; the line items are below, per animal.

- DAFF's own estimate, one pet, 30-day stayAUD 4,234 Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
You pay the quarantine bill in full by Visa, MasterCard or American Express before your pet is released. DAFF reviews its fees every year. Petym found no official figure for flights, the crate, an agent, or vets and labs in the approved country.
Does every pet get the 10-day stay at Mickleham?
No: the standard stay is at least 30 days, cut to 10 only after an official government vet's identity check, which DAFF says it is still negotiating with some approved countries.

The vet scanning the chip at the blood test counts as the identity check.
Myth
What the sources say
No. The check is a separate procedure by an official vet employed by that government. A pet passport, vaccination card or microchip certificate does not count either. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)

Myth
What the sources say
No. Oral products and tick collars are not accepted: the product must kill fleas and ticks on contact. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
What gets a pet held, sent back or refused at Melbourne?
A broken permit condition, a microchip that does not match, a lapsed vaccine or a banned breed, and you pay for whatever follows.
If a permit condition is broken
Your pet may be held longer in quarantine, tested again, exported or euthanised, and you are liable for the costs. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If the microchip cannot be read, or its number does not match the papers
The pet cannot be imported. DAFF does not accept a lab report on which the microchip number, collection date or result has been corrected. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If the rabies vaccine lapses
The pet becomes ineligible: it needs a new vaccine and a new RNATT, and the 180 days start again. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If your dog is a banned breed
Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, American pit bull terrier or pit bull terrier, Perro de Presa Canario and four wolfdog hybrids cannot come. If a dog may be one after arrival, the Department of Home Affairs may investigate. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If your cat is a Bengal, Savannah, Safari or Chausie
It cannot come: Bengal cats have been banned since 1 March 2026, alongside the three hybrids. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If your dog is more than 30 days pregnant, or nursing puppies
It cannot be exported to Australia. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If you pack toys, medicines or valuables in the crate
They are destroyed as biosecurity waste on arrival, and so is any food sent with the pet. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia)
If your pet is old or unwell
DAFF treats cats over 12, small dogs over 10 and large dogs over 7 years as special-care animals, and does not recommend importing sick or very elderly pets. DAFF
If your pet lands between December and February
Melbourne can pass 40 °C, with a real risk of heatstroke; DAFF names snub-nosed dogs as at risk. DAFF

How long is pet quarantine in Australia for a dog that started in India?
- At least 30 days at the Mickleham facility near Melbourne, or at least 10 days if an official vet in the approved country verified the dog's identity before its rabies blood test.
Does Australia accept a rabies vaccine given in India?
- No. DAFF requires every vaccine and test to be done in an approved country.
How much does Australia's pet import permit cost?
- AUD 626 for the first cat or dog and AUD 299 for each extra one in the same consignment, according to DAFF's permit page.
Can I visit my dog or cat in quarantine at Mickleham?
- No. DAFF does not allow visits during the 10- or 30-day stay. It emails you within 24 hours of arrival and sends updates during the stay.

- No. Since 1 March 2026 Bengal cats are no longer allowed into Australia by any route, along with Savannah, Safari and Chausie hybrids.
Does NexGard or Bravecto count as the flea and tick treatment for Australia?
- No. DAFF does not accept oral products or tick collars. Use a product that kills fleas and ticks on contact, started at least 30 days (dogs) or 21 days (cats) before export.
How long does moving a dog from India to Australia take?
- Well over a year in most cases, by Petym's working: the move to an approved country, the rabies vaccine and blood test there, at least 180 days after the sample reaches the laboratory, the permit's 20 to 40 business days (up to 123), then 10 or 30 days at Mickleham. The steps can overlap; the 180 days cannot be shortened.
