I missed my dog's booster. What now?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
Book a vet visit soon and take the vaccination card. For an adult dog, a late core booster (DHPPi on many cards) usually does not mean starting over: WSAVA says one dose of modified live core vaccine will very likely protect a dog over 26 weeks old. Lapsed leptospirosis vaccines may need two doses again, 2 to 4 weeks apart.
Rabies boosters follow your vaccine's licence and local rules, so let your vet decide. Until your dog is up to date, keep it away from unknown dogs and, in the monsoon, from puddles and flooded areas.
Which vaccines restart, and which just need the next dose?
It depends on the type of vaccine, as WSAVA's 2024 guidelines explain. Your vet reads the card and decides.
If An adult dog's core booster (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus: DHPPi on many Indian cards) is late
Usually one dose now. WSAVA says a single dose of modified live core vaccine will very likely immunise a pet dog over 26 weeks of age, with a second dose 2 to 4 weeks later worth considering in high-risk situations such as outbreaks. WSAVAstudy
If The leptospirosis or another non-core vaccine has lapsed for a long time
WSAVA advises, as a precaution, to start again with two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart. WSAVAstudy
If The rabies booster is overdue
Follow your vet and local rules. WSAVA says rabies revaccination intervals are often set by law, and AAHA notes that laws may also govern how overdue rabies doses are handled. AAHA (JAAHA)study
If A puppy missed a dose in its first course
Call your vet. The puppy doses are not boosters but repeated tries to immunise as the mother's antibodies fade, and WSAVA wants the last one at 16 weeks or older, so the plan may shift. Puppy and dog vaccination schedule WSAVAstudy
How long is my dog protected after the due date?
Often for a while, but you cannot count on it.
PDSA says a dog that has missed a vaccine might still have protection for 2 to 3 months after its booster was due, but after that it is at risk. That is a rough guide, not a guarantee. It is why the advice is to book the vet soon rather than wait for a convenient month.
The core vaccines last longest. WSAVA explains that vaccines against canine parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus give long-lasting protection, and in many dogs they are given no more often than every three years. Non-core vaccines, including leptospirosis, generally need giving every year to protect reliably, which is why a lapse there matters more.
WSAVA also notes that adult dogs usually still have antibodies against the core viruses at booster time, however long it has been since their last vaccination. Some vets can test for these antibodies in the clinic, which can help decide whether a core dose is needed.
What should you do this week?
- Find the vaccination card and photograph it, so the vet can see which vaccines and batches your dog had and when. WSAVAstudy
- Book the earliest appointment you can. Say the booster is overdue. PDSA
- Until then, keep your dog away from unknown or unvaccinated dogs. PDSA
- Avoid high-risk places for leptospirosis, such as ponds, rivers, puddles and flooded streets. PDSA
- Check your city licence or registration: many depend on a current rabies vaccination, and some lapse with it. Municipal Corporation of Delhi
- Put the next due dates in your phone, or use a reminder tool, before you leave the clinic.

Why does a late booster matter more in India?
WSAVA says that wherever rabies is endemic, all dogs and cats should be vaccinated against it, for the protection of pets and people. India is one of those places. It also says that where canine leptospirosis is endemic and suitable vaccines exist, vaccinating all dogs against it is highly recommended and should be considered core there. Leptospirosis spreads in water, which is why the monsoon is the worst time to be behind.
If you are travelling or booking boarding, check the card well in advance: many boarders and sitters ask for current vaccinations. A Petym sitter follows your dog's plan as you write it and keeps a copy of the vaccination record with the care sheet.
Going away soon? Tell us your dates.
A checked local sitter feeds, walks and keeps your pet company at home, follows your care sheet to the letter and sends a photo every day. Petym is opening city by city: send your dates and we will tell you when a sitter can take them.

Questions owners ask
Does my dog need to restart vaccines if the booster is a year late?
- For the core vaccine, usually not: WSAVA says one dose of modified live core vaccine will very likely immunise an adult dog. For leptospirosis and other non-core vaccines, WSAVA advises restarting with two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart after a long lapse. Your vet decides from the card.
Is it dangerous to give a booster late?
- Giving the vaccine late is not more dangerous than giving it on time. The risk is the gap: PDSA says protection may last 2 to 3 months past the due date and then fades. Book the vet soon and keep your dog away from unknown dogs meanwhile.
My puppy missed its second vaccine. What do I do?
- Call your vet. Puppy doses are repeated so one lands after the mother's antibodies fade, and WSAVA wants the last dose at 16 weeks or older, with another at or after 26 weeks. Your vet will adjust the plan; keep the puppy away from unknown dogs and public ground until then.
Can a vet test whether my dog still has immunity?
- For the core viruses, yes. WSAVA describes in-clinic antibody tests for distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus, and says the presence of antibody indicates immunity to those viruses. The tests do not apply to leptospirosis, and rabies vaccination follows the law.
Will my dog's licence be valid if the rabies booster is late?
- Check your city's rules. In Delhi, for example, the Municipal Corporation links pet dog registration to rabies vaccination. Bring the updated vaccination card when you renew, and ask the corporation if your licence lapsed while the vaccine was overdue.
