Do indie dogs need vaccines?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
Yes. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association says core vaccines are those all dogs should receive: distemper, canine adenovirus and parvovirus everywhere, and rabies wherever it is endemic, as it is in India. Being an Indie does not change that. A study in Kolkata found most parvovirus cases in unvaccinated non-descript dogs.
If you adopt an Indie of any age, take it to a vet in the first week. The vet will plan the vaccines from its age and any history, and India's Animal Birth Control Rules make you, as the owner, responsible for its vaccination.
Why do indie dogs need the same vaccines as other dogs?
Because the viruses do not care about breed, and they are common in India.
WSAVA's 2024 vaccination guidelines define core vaccines as those that all dogs and cats should receive. For dogs, in every country, that means protection against canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus. The guidelines add that where rabies is endemic, rabies vaccine should be considered essential even if no law requires it, and that where canine leptospirosis is endemic and suitable vaccines exist, leptospirosis vaccine should be treated as core as well. WSAVA also says it strongly recommends that all dogs get the benefit of vaccination, because it protects the individual and builds herd immunity.
The idea that Indies are naturally immune has no support in the evidence we found. In a 2023 study of dogs with diarrhoea in Kolkata, canine parvovirus was most common in puppies aged one to six months and in non-descript dogs with no history of vaccination. A 2024 study of cases from seven north-eastern states found the CPV-2c variant dominant there. The Merck Veterinary Manual says young, unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated dogs are the most susceptible to parvovirus, whatever their breed. Indies are hardy dogs, but hardy is not the same as protected.
Which vaccines does an indie dog need?
WSAVA's categories for pet dogs, with what they mean in India. Your vet chooses the products and the timing.
| WSAVA category | What it means for an Indie in India | |
|---|---|---|
| Canine distemper WSAVAstudy | Core for all dogs | Needed. Part of the combined DHPPi type vaccine on most Indian cards. |
| Canine parvovirus WSAVAstudy | Core for all dogs | Needed. Current vaccines protect against the 2a, 2b and 2c variants when used as the guidelines advise. |
| Canine adenovirus (hepatitis) WSAVA | Core for all dogs | Needed. Also in the combined vaccine. |
| Rabies WSAVA | Core wherever rabies is endemic or the law requires it | Needed. Rabies is endemic in India, and city licences ask for the certificate. |
| Leptospirosis WSAVA | Core where endemic and suitable vaccines exist | Ask your vet, especially before the monsoon. Mumbai's licence asks for a leptospirosis certificate too. |
| Parainfluenza and Bordetella (kennel cough) WSAVA | Non-core | Chosen by risk, for example before boarding or day care. |

What should you do for your indie dog?
Find the line that fits your dog, then book the vet.
If A puppy under four months
The vet will give a series of core vaccines. WSAVA advises repeat doses every 2 to 4 weeks with the last at 16 weeks or older, because the mother's antibodies can block early doses. Keep the puppy away from dog-heavy areas until the vet says it is protected. Puppy and dog vaccination schedule WSAVAstudy
If An adult Indie with no known vaccine history
It is not too late. WSAVA says a single dose of the core modified live vaccine and of rabies vaccine is enough for an unvaccinated adult dog, with two doses needed for leptospirosis. Your vet confirms the plan. WSAVAstudy
If An adopted Indie with a V-shaped notch in its right ear
Under the ABC Rules the notch marks a sterilised and immunised street dog. It does not show which vaccines or when, so ask your vet whether to vaccinate again. Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (Gazette of India copy on AWBI's site)
If A community dog you feed but do not own
The ABC Rules make the local authority responsible for street dogs' immunisation. Tell your local ABC programme or a welfare group if a dog you feed needs its rabies vaccine. Feeding community dogs Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (Gazette of India copy on AWBI's site)

Is vaccination a legal duty for indie dog owners?
Partly. The Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023 say that for pet animals the owner is responsible for deworming, immunisation and sterilisation, and that for street animals the local authority is. Once you take an Indie home, its vaccines are your responsibility.
City licences add a practical rule. Delhi's pet dog registration needs a current anti-rabies certificate from a registered vet, and Mumbai's licence also asks for a leptospirosis certificate. Housing societies, boarding homes and pet sitters will usually ask for the same card. The pet registration page lists each city's rule.

Questions owners ask
Do street dogs need the rabies vaccine?
- Yes. WSAVA says rabies vaccine is core wherever rabies is endemic, and India is endemic. Under the ABC Rules, 2023 the local authority is responsible for immunising street dogs, and once you adopt one, the duty passes to you as owner. City licences also ask for a current rabies certificate.
Is DHPPi enough for an indie dog?
- DHPPi covers distemper, hepatitis (adenovirus), parvovirus and parainfluenza, which includes the three core viruses WSAVA names for every dog. Rabies vaccine is separate and also core in India, and your vet may add leptospirosis. Ask the vet to write each vaccine and its next due date on the card.
My adult indie has never been vaccinated. Is it too late?
- No. WSAVA's guidelines give a protocol for unvaccinated adult dogs: core modified live vaccine and rabies vaccine, with two doses for leptospirosis. Your vet will check your dog's health first and set the plan. Starting late is far better than not starting.
Are indie dogs more resistant to parvovirus?
- Not that the evidence shows. A 2023 Kolkata study found parvovirus most often in puppies of one to six months and in non-descript dogs with no vaccination history. The Merck Veterinary Manual says young, unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated dogs are the most susceptible, whatever their breed.
Do I need to vaccinate an indie I adopted from an ABC centre?
- Ask your vet. Under the ABC Rules a V-shaped notch in the right ear marks a dog as sterilised and immunised, but it does not record which vaccines or when. A vet visit in the first week lets you start a proper card for your dog.
