How often should I bathe my dog in India?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

For most healthy dogs, about once a month is enough. The Merck Veterinary Manual says to bathe a dog with pet shampoo about once a month, depending on the season, or whenever the coat gets very dirty or smells bad. Brushing in between does more for the coat and skin than extra baths.

In India, adjust for the weather rather than bathing more often: rinse muddy paws after monsoon walks and dry the coat right down to the skin, because damp, matted fur can lead to skin infections. A dog with a skin condition follows its vet's bathing plan instead.

How often should different dogs be bathed?

Start from once a month and move it up or down for your dog's coat, skin and life.

These are starting points from veterinary sources, not a fixed schedule. Your vet can tell you what suits your dog's skin.

Why not bathe a dog every week?

Frequent washing strips the skin's protective layer, and a dog's skin is thinner than ours.

Dogs, cats and people all have a thin film on the skin called the acid mantle. VCA's vets explain that bathing washes it away, which is why shampoos and conditioners for pets contain moisturisers, and that people have 10 to 15 layers of skin cells while dogs have only 3 to 5, so dogs rely on a healthy skin barrier. The American Kennel Club notes that the acid mantle protects the top layer of skin and helps it hold moisture.

That does not mean a dirty dog should stay dirty. Merck's rule is about once a month or whenever the dog is very dirty or smells bad. If your dog seems to need a bath every few days because it smells, scratches or has greasy or flaky skin, the cause may be a skin problem: Merck lists hair loss, excessive itching and red spots on the skin among signs that a dog may be ill. That is a reason to see a vet, not to bathe more.

Brushing is the daily work. Merck says regular brushing removes loose hair and prevents mats, especially in dogs with thick or long fur, and that matted hair can irritate the skin and lead to infection.

How do you bathe a dog safely at home?

A good bath is mostly about what happens before and after the shampoo.

  • Brush out loose hair and tangles first. Do not cut mats with scissors: Merck warns it is easy to cut the skin, and suggests pet clippers instead. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Use a shampoo made for pets. VCA says the pH of dog skin is more neutral than human skin. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • For a medicated shampoo, follow your vet's instructions; Merck says medicated shampoos usually need to stay on the coat for 10 minutes to work. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Dry the coat right through, including the armpits, feet, neck and any skin folds, where Merck says warm, moist skin carries more bacteria. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Check for mats that stay wet: VCA says matted fur holds water after a dog swims or is caught in rain, a set-up for hot spots. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • Run your hands over the coat for ticks, especially between the toes, in the ears and around the neck. Merck Veterinary Manual

Should you bathe a dog more in an Indian summer or monsoon?

Summer heat tempts owners to bathe a dog every day. A bath does not replace shade, water and walks at cooler hours, and frequent shampooing works against the skin barrier VCA describes. On hot days a plain-water rinse or a damp towel is gentler than a full shampoo, and a dog with a heavy coat is better helped by thorough brushing, which AKC says lets air circulate through the coat. Do not shave a double coat down to the skin for summer: Texas A&M says shaving is generally unnecessary unless there is matting.

The monsoon is about drying, not washing. Wipe or rinse muddy paws and the belly after walks, then dry them well, including between the toes. Merck says warm, moist skin areas carry more bacteria and are at greater risk of infection, and VCA lists wet, matted fur among the conditions behind hot spots, red, oozing sores that can grow quickly. A fan or a towel matters more in July than an extra shampoo.

Tick season overlaps with both. A bath is a good time to check the coat for ticks, but shampoo does not replace a vet-recommended tick preventive, and some spot-on products need a few dry days after they are applied. If you leave your dog with a Petym sitter, write the bathing and drying routine into the care plan so it is followed as you wrote it.

Questions owners ask

Can I bathe my dog every day in summer?

It is better not to shampoo daily. VCA explains that bathing washes away the skin's protective acid mantle, and dogs have only 3 to 5 layers of skin cells against our 10 to 15. Merck suggests about once a month. On hot days, use shade, water and cooler walking times, and a plain-water rinse if your dog needs one.

How often should I bathe a puppy?

Only when needed, with a shampoo made for pets, keeping the puppy warm and drying it fully afterwards. Ask your vet when to start and which shampoo to use, especially during the vaccination course. Gentle brushing and handling from early on gets a puppy used to grooming without frequent baths.

How often should I bathe a Labrador or Golden Retriever in India?

Roughly once a month suits most healthy dogs, Merck says, or when the dog is very dirty or smells. Labradors and Golden Retrievers have dense coats, so dry them right down to the skin after a bath or rain. Brushing between baths removes dead undercoat and lets air reach the skin.

Why does my dog smell again a few days after a bath?

A smell that comes back quickly can come from the skin, ears or teeth rather than dirt. Merck lists hair loss, excessive itching and red spots among the signs a dog may be ill, and warm, moist skin folds carry more bacteria. See your vet rather than bathing more often.

Can I bathe my dog after a flea or tick treatment?

Not straight away. The RSPCA says pets should not swim, be bathed or go to the groomer for a few days after a flea treatment, and to check the product leaflet for details. Wait times differ between products, so read your product's leaflet or ask your vet before the next bath.
