A stray dog bit my dog: what should I do?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
Get both dogs apart without using your hands, check your dog for bleeding, and take it to your vet within a few hours, even if the bite looks small. VCA vets say all bite wounds are treated as contaminated, and wounds treated within six hours heal best. Take the vaccination card so the vet can decide on a rabies booster.
Watch your dog closely for the next weeks and tell your vet about any change in behaviour. If you were bitten or scratched while separating the dogs, or your dog's saliva touched a cut, wash it and see a doctor the same day.
What should you do in the first hour?
Safety first, for you and your dog. Then a vet, the same day.
If The dogs are still fighting.
Do not reach between them with your hands. VCA's vets warn that pain or fear can make even a gentle dog bite, and that includes your own dog once it is hurt. VCA Animal Hospitals
If Heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, weakness, pale or blue gums, or collapse.
This is an emergency. Press a clean cloth on any bleeding and go straight to the nearest 24-hour vet. VCA Animal Hospitals
If Only a few small puncture marks.
Still call your vet now. Small punctures can close over quickly and hide damage to muscle underneath. VCA Animal Hospitals
If You want to clean the wound at home first.
Muzzle or gently restrain your dog before touching it, wear gloves, and do not use hydrogen peroxide unless your vet tells you to: it can slow healing. VCA Animal Hospitals
If You got bitten, scratched or licked on a cut in the struggle.
Wash it with soap and running water for up to 15 minutes and see a doctor or a government anti-rabies clinic today. National Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
Why does a small bite need a vet?
Because what you see on the skin is rarely the whole injury.
A dog's mouth is full of bacteria, so any bite that breaks the skin carries bacteria into the tissue underneath. VCA's vets say all bite wounds are considered contaminated or infected, and that wounds which look minor on the surface can be deceptive and even life-threatening, with crushed muscle or damage to the neck, chest or belly beneath a few small holes.
Left alone, the infection can form an abscess or spread under the skin as cellulitis, and in rare cases reach joints, bone or the chest. Time matters: VCA says wounds treated within six hours of the injury have the best chance of healing without complications. Your vet may need to sedate your dog to clean the wound properly and decide whether to close it, leave it open or drain it. Any medicine is the vet's decision.
Follow your vet's plan for cleaning and rechecks, and go back early if a wound smells, oozes or swells, because VCA notes that untreated bites can turn into abscesses or cellulitis.
Does my dog need a rabies booster after a stray dog bite?
Your vet decides. This is what the veterinary sources say the decision depends on.
If Your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date and on the card
Ask your vet about a booster straight away. The Merck Veterinary Manual says a vaccinated dog exposed to a possibly rabid animal should have wound care, be revaccinated immediately and be closely observed. Merck Veterinary Manual
If The vaccine is overdue, or you have no card
Tell the vet at once. WSAVA counts rabies vaccine as core wherever the disease is endemic, as it is in India, and an unprotected dog is at real risk. Puppy and dog vaccination schedule WSAVA
If Your dog is a puppy that has not had its rabies vaccine yet
See the vet the same day. The vet decides how to protect a young puppy after a bite, following local rules and the vaccine maker's leaflet, as WSAVA advises. WSAVA
If You can see the stray dog again
Note whether it stays well over the next days and tell your vet and your local animal welfare group if it falls ill or behaves oddly. Do not try to catch it yourself. Merck Veterinary Manual
Where do the rules on a bitten dog differ?
The firmest published rules come from the United States, and they are not India's. The Merck Veterinary Manual, following the US National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians, says a vaccinated dog exposed to rabies should be revaccinated and observed for 45 days, and that an unvaccinated dog should be put to sleep or kept in strict isolation for four to six months. We found no equivalent Indian rule for pet owners in the national guidelines we checked on 21 October 2026, so in India this is a decision you make with your vet.
That gap is one more reason to keep your dog's rabies vaccine current. The NCDC advises keeping rabies vaccinations up to date for every pet and supervising pets outdoors so they do not come into close contact with possibly rabid street animals. Your vet sets the timing, which WSAVA says follows local law and the licensed product.
What should you watch for in the weeks after?
Keep a note each day. Call your vet the same day if you see any of these.
- Swelling, heat, pain, smell or discharge at the wound, or a lump that appears days later. VCA Animal Hospitals
- Limping, crying or whining, or not wanting to be touched. VCA Animal Hospitals
- Weakness, fast or difficult breathing, or pale gums: an emergency. VCA Animal Hospitals
- A new change in behaviour, especially unusual aggression. Merck lists pronounced aggression in the furious form of rabies. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Heavy drooling, trouble swallowing, or a wobbly walk. Merck lists these in the paralytic form. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Signs can appear weeks later: Merck says most rabies cases in dogs develop within 21 to 80 days of exposure. Merck Veterinary Manual
Are the people at home at risk?
Handling a bitten dog is a small but real risk, so be careful rather than worried. India's rabies guidelines treat licks on broken skin and saliva on the eyes, nose or mouth as exposures, as well as bites and scratches. Wear gloves when you clean or dress the wound, keep children from handling it, and wash your hands afterwards.
If your dog bites or scratches anyone in the weeks after, or its behaviour changes, that person should wash the wound and see a doctor the same day and mention the stray dog bite. The NCDC says every animal bite in India is treated as a possible rabies exposure, and that anti-rabies vaccine and serum are free at public health facilities.

Questions owners ask
Should I wash my dog's bite wound at home?
- You can rinse it gently with clean water while you arrange the vet, but muzzle your dog first and wear gloves. VCA advises against hydrogen peroxide unless your vet says so, because it can slow healing. Home cleaning does not replace the vet: bite wounds hide damage and need checking within hours.
My dog is vaccinated. Does he still need a rabies injection after a bite?
- Ask your vet the same day. The Merck Veterinary Manual says a vaccinated dog exposed to a possibly rabid animal should be revaccinated immediately and closely observed. Your vet will check the date on the card and decide what your dog needs.
How long after a bite can rabies show in a dog?
- Usually weeks, sometimes longer. The Merck Veterinary Manual says most clinical cases of rabies in dogs develop within 21 to 80 days after exposure. Keep watching your dog's behaviour for weeks after a stray dog bite and tell your vet about any change.
Should I report the stray dog that bit my dog?
- Telling your local animal welfare group or the municipal ABC programme helps, especially if the dog seems ill or aggressive, so it can be checked. Do not try to catch or harm the dog: community dogs are protected under India's cruelty and ABC rules.
Can my dog give me rabies after a stray bite?
- Only if your dog became infected, which is why vets act fast on boosters. To be safe, wear gloves when handling the wound. If your dog bites or scratches you later, wash it and see a doctor the same day, as India's guidelines advise for any animal bite.
