Is pet insurance worth it in India?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

It can be, for a young, healthy, fully vaccinated dog facing a large surgery or hospital bill. But the limits are real. In the wording we read, illness claims in the first 30 days are not paid, earlier conditions are excluded, cover ends at a set age, and diseases the dog was not vaccinated against are not covered.

So the honest answer is: it depends on your dog's age and health and on the wording, not the brochure. Read the exclusions, waiting periods, age limits and co-pay before you buy, and compare them with what you could set aside each month as your own vet fund.

What does pet insurance in India actually cover?

In the wording we read, a menu of separate covers, each with its own limits and exclusions.

We read the Bajaj Allianz Pet Dog Insurance Policy wording that is published on the website of IRDAI, the insurance regulator. It is a dog policy: the wording covers an insured dog only, so if you have a cat, ask any insurer directly whether it offers cat cover. The policy has seven sections: surgery and hospitalisation, a mortality benefit, terminal diseases, long-term care, outpatient (OPD) treatment, third-party liability, and theft, loss or straying.

Each section has its own exclusions. The surgery section, for example, carries a 10% co-pay on every claim, which means you pay a tenth of each admissible claim yourself. The terminal diseases section lists conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, distemper and leptospirosis and pays only if the dog survives at least 30 days after diagnosis.

The dog has to be identified in the policy schedule with a photograph or microchip number, and the owner must take it for regular annual check-ups and keep it vaccinated for rabies, distemper, hepatitis, adenovirus, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, corona and parvovirus throughout the policy.

Which terms in the wording matter most?

The words that decide whether a claim is paid, as this wording uses them.

Waiting period
Illness claims under the first five sections arising within 30 days of the start are not paid. Theft, loss and straying claims are not paid in the first 90 days. Accidents and third-party liability have no waiting period. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)
Pre-existing condition
Accidents that happened, and diseases contracted, before the policy started are excluded, except on policies renewed without a break. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)
Co-pay
The share of each admissible claim you pay yourself. It does not reduce the sum insured. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)
Entry age
From 3 months, up to 4 years for giant breeds and 7 years for small, medium and large breeds. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)
Exit age
10 years for small, medium and large breeds, and 6 years for giant breeds. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)
Continuous renewal
Renewing without a break keeps your waiting periods served. A break means a fresh proposal with fresh waiting periods. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)
Working dog
A dog used or trained for guarding, security, farming, hunting, racing or volunteering. Their illness and injury claims are excluded. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)

What does pet insurance usually not pay for?

From the general and section exclusions of the wording we read. Read your own policy's list in full.

Is it worth it for your dog?

Petym’s working from the official rules, no government publishes a total.

Petym's reading of how the wording plays out for different owners. Your own numbers decide it.

  1. If You have a young puppy with no health history, and you will keep vaccines up to date

This is when cover is most useful: the dog fits the entry age, has no pre-existing conditions, and each continuous renewal keeps the waiting periods served. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)

  2. If Your dog is over 4 years old

In this wording a new policy needs recent blood, urine and chest X-ray reports, or there is no cover for the first three months, and any condition found in the reports is excluded. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)

  3. If Your dog already has a long-term condition

That condition is pre-existing and will not be covered. A monthly vet fund may do more for you than a policy that excludes the illness you worry about. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)

  4. If Your dog guards a farm, shop or factory, or is a giant breed near the age limit

Working dogs are excluded from illness and injury claims, and giant breeds have lower entry and exit ages. Read those clauses first. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)

  5. If You want help with routine costs such as vaccines and deworming

Look elsewhere: preventive care is excluded. Plan these costs yourself with your vet, using a vaccination card to keep dates. Puppy and dog vaccination schedule Bajaj Allianz General Insurance (policy wording filed with IRDAI, copy on irdai.gov.in)

Why do vaccines and records matter so much to a claim?

Because the wording ties cover to them. It excludes claims for diseases for which preventive medicines or vaccines were not taken, refuses the mortality benefit where the dog dies or is put to sleep from an illness it was not vaccinated against, and asks for vaccination certificates and a self-declaration that vaccinations were done on time with the proposal.

In practice, a lapsed booster can cost you a claim. Keep the vaccination card current, file every vet bill and prescription, and keep the photograph or microchip number that identifies your dog on the policy. Our dog vaccination schedule and the vaccine due date checker help you stay on top of the dates.

What if a claim is refused?

Complain to the insurer first, in writing, using the grievance route in your policy wording. If the insurer does not reply within one month, or you are not satisfied with the reply, you can go to the Insurance Ombudsman, set up under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017.

The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen says a complaint must be made within one year of the insurer's rejection, or within one year after the one-month reply period ends if there was no reply, and that the Ombudsman does not charge any fee. The wording we read lists the Ombudsman offices and their addresses.

Questions owners ask

What is the waiting period for pet insurance in India?

In the Bajaj Allianz pet dog wording on IRDAI's website, illness claims arising within 30 days of the start are not paid, and theft, loss or straying claims are not paid in the first 90 days. Accidents and third-party liability have no waiting period, and continuous renewals carry none. Other insurers' wordings may differ.

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Not in the wording we read. It excludes accidents that happened and diseases contracted before the policy began, unless the policy is renewed without a break. A dog over 4 years old taking a new policy needs recent test reports, and any listed illness they show is not covered.

Does pet insurance pay for vaccinations?

No. The wording we read excludes the cost of vaccination, microchipping and spaying, and it goes further: it refuses claims for diseases the dog was not vaccinated against. Keeping vaccines up to date is a condition of cover, not something the policy pays for.

Up to what age can I insure my dog in India?

In the wording we read, a dog can join from 3 months old up to 7 years for small, medium and large breeds, and up to 4 years for giant breeds. Cover ends at 10 years, or 6 years for giant breeds. Check the policy schedule for your own plan's limits.

Can I insure my cat in India?

The wording we read is a dog-only policy, so it does not cover cats. Ask insurers directly whether they offer cat cover, and read the full wording, including the waiting periods, exclusions and age limits, before you buy. Never rely on a summary or an advert alone.
