How do I stop my dog barking at night?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
Find out why your dog barks, then remove the reason. At night the usual causes are noises outside such as community dogs, needing to toilet, being shut away alone, boredom after too little exercise, and pain or ageing. Block the view and sound, meet the need, and reward quiet. Shouting, punishment and anti-bark collars make most barking worse.
If the night barking is new, or your dog is older, restless or seems sore, see your vet first: the ASPCA advises ruling out medical causes before any training. If the barking happens only when your dog is left alone, it may be a separation problem that needs its own plan.
Why do dogs bark at night?
Barking is communication. The ASPCA groups it by purpose, and each purpose has a different fix.
| What it looks like at night | What helps | |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm or territorial ASPCA | Barks at footsteps, the watchman's stick, autos, or the lift door | Block the view, keep the dog away from the front door and windows, teach a quiet cue |
| Socially facilitated ASPCA | Joins in when community dogs in the lane start barking | Keep the dog in an inner room, play music to cover the sound, distract with a chew |
| Attention-seeking ASPCA | Barks at you until you get up, talk or scold | Do not respond to the barking; reward the dog once it is quiet |
| Needs to toilet Humane World for Animals | A puppy or an older dog barks or whines a few hours after settling | A short, boring toilet trip, then straight back to bed |
| Distress when alone PDSA | Barks or howls only when shut away from the family | Sleep nearer to people while you work on time alone |
| Pain, illness or ageing Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine | New barking, restlessness, pacing or wandering at night | See your vet before any training |
The ASPCA lists compulsive and frustration barking too: both need more exercise, mental stimulation and, for compulsive barking, a behaviourist.
What can you do tonight to stop the barking?
Most night barking falls quickly when the dog cannot see or hear its triggers and has had a full day.
- Give a proper walk, sniffing time and a food puzzle in the evening. The ASPCA advises more exercise, mental stimulation and social contact for dogs that bark a lot. ASPCA
- Move the bed away from the balcony, front door and windows that face the street. Frosted film on low glass blocks the view of passers-by. ASPCA
- Play music or a fan in the room to drown out other dogs barking outside. ASPCA
- Offer a last toilet trip just before bed, and for a puppy, keep the crate in or near your bedroom so you hear when it needs to go out. Humane World for Animals
- Keep night toilet trips short and dull: out, toilet, back to bed, no play. Humane World for Animals
- Do not get up, talk or scold for attention barking; wait for quiet, then reward it. ASPCA
- Teach a quiet cue in the daytime: let the dog bark three or four times, say the cue calmly, and reward the moment it stops. ASPCA
Why do Indian homes make night barking harder?
Indian streets are busy at night, and many flats share walls and stairwells.
In many Indian neighbourhoods community dogs patrol and bark through the night, watchmen do rounds, and late deliveries and autos pass under the window. A pet dog that hears all of this from a balcony or a front room has a reason to bark every few minutes. The ASPCA calls this socially facilitated barking when a dog joins in with other dogs, and advises keeping the dog indoors, away from the sound, with music to cover it.
Summer heat and power cuts can also leave a dog restless and unable to settle, so make sure it has a cool, shaded place to sleep and fresh water. Barking itself is not against the law, but the Animal Welfare Board of India asks owners to try to keep dogs quiet at night. If a neighbour has already complained, read what the law says before you reply.
What should you not do about night barking?
Quick fixes that frighten or hurt the dog tend to add fear, which makes barking worse.
Do
- Reward calm, quiet behaviour, and teach the dog what to do instead. AVSAB says barking can be managed by arranging the environment and reinforcing the response you want. American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior
- Rule out pain and illness with your vet, especially if the barking is new. ASPCA
- Be consistent: everyone at home answers barking the same way. ASPCA
Don’t
- Do not shout. The ASPCA advises against yelling when you teach quiet, and says territorial barkers often ignore scolding anyway. ASPCA
- Do not use anti-bark or shock collars. The ASPCA calls bark collars punishment devices, and says almost all dogs become collar-wise. ASPCA
- Do not muzzle a dog to keep it quiet for long periods or tie its mouth shut. ASPCA
- Do not punish barking that comes from fear or anxiety; it needs a behaviour plan, not a correction. ASPCA

Questions owners ask
Should I ignore my puppy barking at night in the crate?
- Partly. Humane World for Animals says to ignore whining that is just testing you, but never punish it. If the barking goes on for several minutes, take your puppy out for a short toilet trip with no play, then back to bed. Keeping the crate in or near your bedroom helps you tell the two apart.
Why does my dog bark at street dogs at night?
- Your dog may be alarmed by the noise, guarding its home, or joining in with the barking outside, which the ASPCA calls socially facilitated barking. Move your dog's bed to an inner room away from the street, play music to cover the sound, and offer a chew. Rewarding quiet works better than scolding.
Do anti-bark collars work for night barking?
- They are not recommended. The ASPCA calls bark collars punishment devices and says virtually all dogs become collar-wise, barking again once the collar is off. AVSAB advises against any tool that relies on pain or fear. Fix the reason for the barking and reward quiet instead.
Why has my old dog started barking at night?
- New night barking in an older dog needs a vet visit. Pain, arthritis, failing sight or hearing, and canine cognitive dysfunction can all disturb sleep. Cornell lists night wandering, restlessness and pacing among the signs of cognitive dysfunction, and early treatment can help slow it.
Can my neighbour complain about my dog barking at night?
- Yes. Barking is not an offence in itself, and a society cannot ban a dog for it, but the Animal Welfare Board of India asks owners to keep dogs quiet at night, and constant barking can lead to a nuisance complaint. Showing that you are working on the cause is your best reply.
