Why is my dog scratching so much?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Most dogs that scratch constantly have one of four problems: fleas, mites (mange), an allergy, or a skin or ear infection, often more than one at once. Every dog scratches sometimes, but itching that wakes your dog, breaks the skin or causes hair loss needs a vet, who can find the cause with simple skin tests.

In India, heat and monsoon humidity make skin trouble more common: in one Himachal Pradesh hospital study, nearly half of skin cases came in the rainy season. Check your dog for fleas tonight, keep the coat dry, and book a vet visit rather than trying shampoos and home remedies one after another.

What makes a dog itch?

Usually a parasite, an allergy or an infection, and one often leads to the next.

Itching has a short list of common causes. Fleas bite, and some dogs are allergic to flea saliva, so even a few fleas can set off intense scratching. Mites burrow into or live on the skin and ears. Allergies to things in the air (atopic dermatitis) or, less often, to an ingredient in the food make the skin itch from the inside. Bacteria and yeast then grow on skin that has been scratched raw.

The Merck Veterinary Manual says scratching itself causes wounds, scabbing, skin and ear infections, hair loss and scaling. So an itchy dog can look worse after a week of home remedies: the first cause remains, and an infection has joined it.

Skin disease is one of the most common reasons Indian dogs see a vet. A study at the veterinary college hospital in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, found skin disorders in 227 of 2,671 dogs seen between February 2021 and April 2022. Bacterial skin infection was the most common diagnosis, followed by demodectic mange, fungal infection, fleas and sarcoptic mange, and 80.62% of the dogs with skin disease were itchy.

How can you tell the causes apart?

Where your dog scratches and how fast it started give your vet clues. Only tests confirm the cause.

Where it itchesOther clues
Fleas or flea allergy Merck Veterinary ManualHips, base of the tail and thighsCrusts on the back end; reddish black flea droppings in the coat
Sarcoptic mange (scabies) Merck Veterinary ManualEar edges, elbows, legs, chest and bellyIntense itch that comes on suddenly; can pass to people and other pets
Demodectic mange Merck Veterinary ManualPatches, often on young dogsItch mild or absent in the localised form; widespread cases are serious
Airborne allergy (atopic dermatitis) Merck Veterinary ManualPaws, face, ears, front legs and bellyLicking and chewing the paws, rubbing the face; usually starts between 6 months and 3 years old
Food allergy Merck Veterinary ManualSimilar places to airborne allergyItch that barely changes with the season
Ear infection or ear mites Merck Veterinary ManualEars, with head shakingA smell, redness, swelling or discharge from the ear

Many itchy dogs have two causes at once, such as an allergy with a bacterial infection on top.

What can you check at home tonight?

These checks help you describe the problem to your vet. They do not replace the visit.

  • Part the hair over the hips and at the base of the tail and look for fleas or their droppings: reddish black specks shaped like commas or pellets. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Put any specks on a damp paper towel. Flea droppings dissolve to a reddish brown colour. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Sniff and look inside the ear flaps for a smell, redness, swelling or discharge, and notice any head shaking. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Run your hands over the coat for ticks, especially between the toes, in the ears and around the neck. Ticks are common on Indian dogs and spread tick fever. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Note where your dog scratches, licks or chews most, and whether it is worse in the monsoon or all year. Merck Veterinary Manual

Why is itching worse in the Indian monsoon?

Damp coats and humid air suit bacteria, yeast and fungi. In the Palampur study, 46.69% of skin cases were seen in the monsoon, more than in any other season. Fleas and ticks also thrive in warm weather, and flea larvae survive best in humid homes: the Merck Veterinary Manual says humidity below 50% kills them.

Wet coats and ears matter too. Merck advises keeping ear canals dry, because humidity and water raise the risk of ear infection, and VCA lists matted hair that traps moisture among the triggers for hot spots. After a monsoon walk or a bath, dry your dog fully, including the ears, armpits and between the toes.

What helps, and what makes itching worse?

Treat the cause, not the scratch, and do it with your vet.

Do

  • Use a flea and tick product your vet recommends, and ask about your other pets too: Merck says other pets, strays and wildlife can bring fleas back. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Wash bedding and vacuum where your dog sleeps: flea eggs and larvae live in the home, not just on the dog. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Be patient. Merck says controlling a flea infestation can take 6 weeks to 3 months. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • If your vet suspects a food allergy, feed only the trial diet and treats they recommend, for as long as they say. Merck says a trial can last up to 3 months. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Use a cone or a soft suit if your vet advises it, to stop licking and scratching while the skin heals. VCA Animal Hospitals

Don’t

  • Do not give human antihistamines, steroids or other human medicines without your vet: VCA warns against it. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • Do not put vinegar or home remedies in sore ears. Merck says they can make inflamed ears worse. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Do not rely on blood or skin tests sold to diagnose food allergy. Merck says they are not reliable; a diet trial is the test. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Do not cut matted hair or the hair around a hot spot with scissors. VCA says scissors can cut the skin; let your vet or groomer clip it. VCA Animal Hospitals

When does an itchy dog need a vet soon?

Book a visit within a day or two for these. Go the same day if your dog is also dull, off food or feverish.

  • If A red, wet, oozing patch that is getting bigger

This may be a hot spot. VCA says they can grow dramatically in a short time; your vet will clip, clean and treat it. VCA Animal Hospitals

  • If Sudden, intense itching with crusts on the ears, elbows or belly

Ask about sarcoptic mange, and tell the vet if anyone at home is itchy too. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Head shaking, a smelly ear or discharge

See a vet before cleaning anything. Merck says prompt attention is needed and some dogs need the ear examined under sedation. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Bald patches spreading across the body, especially in a puppy

Your vet will take skin scrapings for demodectic mange, which can be severe when widespread. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Itching that comes back every season or never fully goes

Atopic dermatitis is lifelong and needs long-term management and regular vet checks, Merck says. Merck Veterinary Manual

Questions owners ask

Is it normal for a dog to scratch every day?

A short scratch now and then is normal. Scratching that wakes your dog at night, leaves red or bald patches, breaks the skin or goes on for more than a few days is not. Fleas, mites, allergies and skin infections are the usual causes, and your vet can test for them.

Can a dog have fleas if I cannot see any?

Yes. The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs that are very sensitive to flea bites may groom so much that few fleas are left to see. Look instead for flea droppings, reddish black specks that turn reddish brown on a damp paper towel, especially around the hips and tail base.

Can I catch my dog's itchy skin condition?

Sometimes. Sarcoptic mange can pass from an infected dog to people and other animals, and fleas bite people too. Demodectic mange mites live on all dogs and are not the same risk. If you develop itchy spots after your dog does, tell your vet and see a doctor.

Will changing my dog's food stop the itching?

Only if a food allergy is the cause, which is less common than airborne allergy. Merck says food allergy is diagnosed with a strict elimination diet trial lasting up to 3 months, fed only as your vet directs. Swapping brands every few weeks does not work as a test and can confuse the picture.

Does pet insurance pay for skin problems?

Check your wording. One Indian dog policy filed with IRDAI excludes skin-related treatments from its hospitalisation section and skin disease surgery from its surgery section. Another excludes routine flea and tick prevention. Read our answer on what pet insurance covers in India before you rely on a policy.
