How often should I deworm my dog?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Puppies need deworming every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age until about 8 weeks, then monthly. For adult dogs, TroCCAP, the council that writes parasite guidelines for the tropics, advises monthly deworming. ESCCAP says a dog whose risk is unclear should be dewormed, or have its poo tested, at least 4 times a year.

In most Indian cities, where dogs walk on shared streets, meet community dogs and live with children, the tropical advice is the one to discuss first. Your vet sets the schedule from your dog's lifestyle and chooses the product; never give a human or leftover medicine.

What do the guidelines say, by age?

The councils agree on early, frequent treatment for puppies. They differ on adults because worm risk differs by region and lifestyle.

Age or situationWhat the guideline says
Puppies, TroCCAP (tropics) Tropical Council for Companion Animal ParasitesFrom 2 weeks of age, every 2 weeks until 8 weeks, then monthly. Treat the mother at the same time.
Puppies, ESCCAP (Europe) European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP)From 14 days, every 2 weeks until 2 weeks after weaning; monthly to 6 months if the risk stays high.
Puppies, CAPC (North America) Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC)From 2 weeks, every 2 weeks until year-round parasite control begins.
Puppies, Merck Veterinary Manual Merck Veterinary ManualAt 2 weeks, repeated every 2 to 3 weeks to 2 months, then monthly to about 6 months.
Adults, TroCCAP Tropical Council for Companion Animal ParasitesMonthly for roundworms; hookworm control may need treatment every 2 weeks or monthly, depending on the product.
Adults, ESCCAP European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP)By risk group: from 1 to 2 times a year for an indoor-only dog to 12 times a year for the highest risk. At least 4 times a year if risk is unclear.
Adults, CAPC Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC)Year-round broad-spectrum parasite control, with poo tests at least twice a year.

TroCCAP writes for tropical countries such as India; ESCCAP for Europe; CAPC for North America.

Why do puppies need deworming so often?

Because most are born with worms or catch them in the first days of life. Roundworm larvae rest in the mother's body and can wake up during pregnancy, crossing the placenta to infect the puppies before birth, and more pass through her milk. TroCCAP says treating every 2 weeks stops these infections becoming established before the worms start laying eggs. Merck describes the first signs as poor growth and loss of condition, with a dull coat, a pot belly, and worms in the poo or vomit.

Hookworms are the more dangerous worm in hot, humid places. Their larvae get in through the skin, by mouth or through the mother's milk, and TroCCAP warns that in puppies they cause diarrhoea, often bloody, with anaemia that can kill, sometimes from as early as 10 days of age. Merck calls anaemia in young puppies the characteristic, and often fatal, sign. A pale, weak or listless puppy needs a vet the same day.

How often should an adult dog be dewormed?

ESCCAP sorts adult dogs by how they live. The groups below are its scheme; the tropical guideline leans to monthly for most dogs.

  1. If Your dog lives indoors only, never meets other dogs, has no park access and eats no raw meat or prey

ESCCAP's lowest risk group: treat 1 to 2 times a year, or test the poo at the same frequency. Few Indian dogs live like this. European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP)

  2. If Your dog goes out on walks and meets other dogs

ESCCAP says treat 4 times a year or test the poo as often. TroCCAP, for the tropics, advises monthly treatment after puppyhood. Tropical Council for Companion Animal Parasites

  3. If Your dog roams, hunts, scavenges, eats prey or is fed raw meat

ESCCAP's higher risk groups: 4 to 12 treatments a year, and every 4 weeks against tapeworm for dogs fed raw meat that was not cooked or frozen enough. European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP)

  4. If Your dog shares a home with children under 5 or 6, or an elderly or immunocompromised person

ESCCAP suggests planned monthly deworming, or a monthly poo test and treatment by result, depending on your vet's risk assessment. European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP)

  5. If You cannot judge the risk

Deworm or test the poo at least 4 times a year. ESCCAP says studies show 1 to 3 dewormings a year do not protect enough. European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP)

Why does India point to the frequent end?

TroCCAP's monthly advice is written for tropical conditions like ours: heat and humidity that keep worm eggs and larvae alive in soil, and many dogs sharing the same streets. A review of Indian studies estimated that about 11% of soil samples from public places in India held Toxocara roundworm eggs, the eggs that infect children who play in parks and put their hands in their mouths.

That second point is why deworming is also family health. CDC says children are most at risk of roundworm infection, which can damage the eye, and TroCCAP says all animal hookworms can infect people, usually as itchy skin tracks. And a clean poo test is not the whole story: TroCCAP notes that finding no eggs in a sample does not rule out infection.

What makes a deworming plan work?

When should I call the vet instead of waiting for the next dose?

  • If A puppy is pale, weak, or has black or bloody diarrhoea

See a vet the same day. Hookworm anaemia can kill young puppies before eggs even show in the poo. Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC)

  • If Worms in the vomit or poo, a pot belly or poor growth

Call your vet. These are signs of a heavy roundworm burden that needs a planned treatment. Merck Veterinary Manual

  • If Diarrhoea with vomiting, or a dog that stops eating

Do not just deworm and wait. Worms are only one cause; see a vet, especially for a puppy. Merck Veterinary Manual

Questions owners ask

Can I deworm my dog every 3 months?

Every 3 months matches ESCCAP's minimum of 4 times a year for a dog whose risk is unclear. The tropical guideline, TroCCAP, advises monthly for adult dogs, and ESCCAP also suggests monthly for dogs living with small children. Ask your vet which fits your dog's walks, diet and household.

When should I first deworm my puppy?

At 2 weeks of age, according to TroCCAP, CAPC and the Merck Veterinary Manual, and ESCCAP says from 14 days. The treatment is repeated every 2 weeks while the puppy is young, with the mother treated at the same time. A breeder or shelter should tell you which dates are already done.

Does an indoor dog in a flat need deworming?

Usually yes, though perhaps less often. ESCCAP puts a dog with no outdoor access, no contact with other dogs and no raw food in its lowest risk group, still treated 1 to 2 times a year. Most flat dogs go for walks on shared streets, which puts them in a higher group.

Is a poo test as good as deworming?

It can be an alternative if done as often as the treatments would be, ESCCAP says. But a negative test does not prove there are no worms, as TroCCAP notes, and eggs can still be passed between tests. Your vet can tell you whether testing, treating or both suits your dog.

Can I use the same dewormer as my child?

No. Never give a human medicine or guess a dose. The product and dose for a dog depend on its weight, age and the worms your vet wants to cover. Ask your vet for a dog product and write the date on the vaccination card.
