How often should I feed my puppy?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Feed a puppy four meals a day from 6 to 12 weeks of age, three meals a day from 3 to 6 months, and two from 6 to 12 months, says the Merck Veterinary Manual. After a year, dogs move to adult food once or twice a day. Feed at set times and take the puppy out after meals.

Also asked as: puppy ko kitni baar khana dena chahiye. How much goes in each meal depends on the food and your puppy's size and growth, so follow the food's label, watch your puppy's body shape, and ask your vet.

How many meals a day does a puppy need at each age?

From the Merck Veterinary Manual's puppy care table.

Over 12 months VCA Animal Hospitals1 or 2Adult foodVCA says at least two meals a day is ideal for most adults

These are meal counts, not amounts. The daily amount is split across the meals and grows as the puppy grows.

Why does a puppy need so many meals?

A small stomach and a lot of growing to do.

VCA explains that feeding three to four meals a day can be helpful for puppies because smaller portions suit a puppy's small stomach. Spreading the day's food over several meals also keeps energy steady through the day.

Regular meal times help house training too. VCA notes that puppies generally need to relieve themselves within 10 to 15 minutes of eating, so a puppy fed at set times can be taken out at set times. In a flat, that predictability is worth more than any gadget.

Dogs are creatures of habit, VCA adds. A routine of meals, toilet trips, play and rest at the same times each day helps a puppy settle, a point RSPCA NSW makes as well.

What are the rules for feeding a puppy well?

Do

  • Feed at set times and pick the bowl up after the meal. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • Use a food labelled complete and balanced for growth, or a home-cooked diet set by your vet or a vet nutritionist. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • Keep the food the breeder or rescue used at first, and change gradually over three to five days if you need to. RSPCA
  • Feed in a quiet place away from other pets, and leave the puppy alone while it eats. RSPCA NSW
  • Keep fresh water available all day, especially in Indian summers. Animal Welfare Board of India

Don’t

  • Free feed from a bowl that is always full. VCA says it is not recommended and can lead to juvenile obesity, binge eating, orthopaedic problems and diabetes. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • Add calcium syrup or other supplements to a complete puppy food without asking your vet. VCA Animal Hospitals
  • Give milk, chocolate, grapes, onion or garlic. ASPCA lists them among foods to keep away from pets. ASPCA Animal Poison Control
  • Put your hands in the bowl or take food away mid-meal; RSPCA NSW says it teaches a puppy to worry about its food. RSPCA NSW

How do I know if I am feeding the right amount?

Look at the puppy, not the bowl.

  1. If You can feel the ribs easily with a thin fat cover, and see a waist from above

About right. WSAVA's charts describe this as an ideal body condition. WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee

  2. If You cannot feel the ribs and there is no waist

Too much. Cut back treats first and ask your vet about the daily amount. WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee

  3. If Ribs, spine and hip bones stand out

Too little, or a health problem. See your vet. WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee

  4. If The puppy leaves food at most meals

Questions owners ask

How many times a day should a 2 month old puppy eat?

Four times a day. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives four meals of puppy food a day from 6 to 12 weeks of age. Spread them through the day, at the same times, and take the puppy out to toilet after each meal.

When should I switch my puppy from 3 meals to 2?

At about six months. Merck's table gives three meals a day from 3 to 6 months and two from 6 to 12 months. Keep the total daily amount the same when you drop a meal, and ask your vet if your puppy is a large breed or not growing well.

When should a puppy switch to adult food?

Merck's table moves puppies to adult food after 12 months. Large and giant breeds grow for longer, so ask your vet when to switch. Change foods gradually over several days to avoid an upset stomach.

Can I leave food out all day for my puppy?

VCA says free feeding is not recommended, because it can create juvenile obesity, encourage binge eating and lead to orthopaedic problems and diabetes. Feed set meals at regular times and pick up what is left after the meal.

Can I feed my puppy home-cooked Indian food?

Only with a vet's plan. VCA notes that home-prepared diets without the right supplement are a common cause of calcium problems in puppies. Petym's puppy diet chart explains what a balanced plan needs and what to avoid, such as onion, garlic and grapes.
