When should I spay my female cat?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
Around four months of age, and by five months. International Cat Care advises neutering at around four months, before sexual maturity, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners supports spaying by five months, because a female cat can breed from as early as four to five months, often with no obvious signs. Your vet confirms the date.
If your cat is older, it is not too late: spaying still prevents litters and uterine infection. Keep her strictly away from unneutered males until the operation, and ask your vet about timing if she is in heat, pregnant or nursing.
Why do vets now advise spaying at about four months?
Because kittens can get pregnant before most owners expect it.
International Cat Care says kittens reach sexual maturity from around four months of age, and that neutering should routinely take place at around four months, before cats reach it. Its pregnancy guide adds that a cat's body changes over the 63 to 65 days of pregnancy, so a kitten that mates at four months can have kittens of her own at six.
The American Association of Feline Practitioners' 2020 position statement supports spaying and neutering cats not meant for breeding by five months of age, to prevent unplanned litters. It asks vets to tell owners that a cat can be reproductively active as early as four to five months without necessarily showing obvious physical signs. The older advice of waiting until six months, or until after a first heat, leaves a window in which many accidental litters happen.
The same statement leaves the exact age to the vet, who weighs the kitten's health and their own surgical and anaesthetic judgement. So the guidance is a target, not a rule: ask at the kitten's vaccine visits, and book the date.
What happens to a female kitten if she is not spayed?
A typical course, from International Cat Care and the AAFP.
From about 4 months
Sexual maturity can begin. She can be reproductively active before you see any signs. American Association of Feline Practitioners (now the Feline Veterinary Medical Association)
Usually around 6 months, sometimes earlier
The first season, or heat. International Cat Care says it is usually around six months but can be earlier, and she will 'call' with a demanding, rising and falling cry. International Cat Care
Each heat
A cycle of around 14 days. If she does not mate, International Cat Care says the cycle repeats about two weeks later. International Cat Care
If she mates
Pregnancy lasts about 63 to 65 days. International Cat Care
Later in life
Unspayed cats can develop pyometra, an infection of the uterus, and are more likely to get mammary tumours. International Cat Care
What does spaying protect your cat from?
The benefits the sources name, with the strength of the evidence where it is limited.
- Unplanned litters, which is the main reason the AAFP gives for spaying by five months. American Association of Feline Practitioners (now the Feline Veterinary Medical Association)
- Pyometra, a uterine infection that International Cat Care lists among the risks for unneutered females. International Cat Care
- Mammary tumours. A 2025 review of four studies found spaying protective, more so when done young, with one study showing benefit only before 1 year. The reviewer rates the evidence as weak. Veterinary Evidence (2025), Goguastudy
- Repeated calling every few weeks, which is stressful for the cat and for neighbours in a flat. International Cat Care
My cat is not a young kitten. When should she be spayed?
Each of these is a conversation with your vet, who decides the date.
If She is older than five months and has not had a heat
Book it soon. The aim of early spaying is to beat the first heat and any pregnancy. American Association of Feline Practitioners (now the Feline Veterinary Medical Association)
If She is an adult who has had heats or litters
It is not too late. Spaying still prevents litters and pyometra; your vet checks her health first. Spay and neuter International Cat Care
If She is in heat now
Tell your vet; they will advise whether to operate now or wait. Keep her indoors and away from unneutered males meanwhile. International Cat Care
If She may be pregnant or is nursing kittens
Ask your vet about the options and the timing. Do not let her out in the meantime. International Cat Care
If She is a community cat you feed
AWBI's 2021 guidelines ask local bodies and recognised welfare groups to sterilise and immunise stray cats. Ask your municipal corporation or a local animal welfare group. Animal Welfare Board of India
What should you expect after the operation?
International Cat Care says cats usually recover quickly, most are back to their normal selves by the next day, and activity should be limited for a while so internal wounds can heal. Follow your vet's discharge sheet on food, the wound and any medicine, and call the clinic if the wound is swollen, weeping or open, or if your cat will not eat.
Spayed cats are more prone to weight gain, International Cat Care notes, so ask your vet whether to change her portions once she has healed. The cat food calculator gives a starting point to discuss.
Why does this matter in India?
In its 2021 circular, the Animal Welfare Board of India told every state that stray cats can be found in large numbers in every district, and that kittens die on roads, under vehicles and in drains. It asked local bodies and recognised welfare groups to run birth control and immunisation for cats on the lines of the dog programme. A spayed pet cat that slips out of a flat cannot add to that, and a community cat that is spayed has fewer litters to lose. If you are planning a trip, spay well before it, so your cat has healed before a sitter or a cattery takes over.

Questions owners ask
Can a 4 month old kitten get pregnant?
- Yes. International Cat Care says cats reach sexual maturity from around four months, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners warns that a cat can be reproductively active as early as four to five months without obvious signs. Keep an unspayed kitten away from unneutered males and book the spay.
Should I let my cat have one litter before spaying?
- None of the veterinary sources we checked recommends it. International Cat Care advises neutering at around four months, before sexual maturity, and the AAFP supports spaying by five months. A litter adds kittens who need homes, and the cat can breed again afterwards unless she is spayed.
Is it safe to spay a kitten so young?
- The AAFP's 2020 position statement supports spaying cats not meant for breeding by five months, and International Cat Care advises around four months. Both leave the exact age to your vet, who weighs the kitten's health and surgical and anaesthetic factors. Ask at a vaccine visit.
Will spaying make my cat fat?
- International Cat Care says neutered cats are more prone to weight gain, but that is managed with portions and play, not by skipping the operation. Ask your vet whether to adjust her food after she heals, and check her body condition every few weeks.
Who spays community cats in India?
- AWBI's 2021 guidelines ask local bodies, working directly or through animal welfare organisations recognised by AWBI, to run birth control and immunisation for stray cats. Ask your municipal corporation's veterinary department or a local welfare group which programme runs in your area.
