My dog is aggressive to street dogs on walks: what do I do?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
Most pet dogs that bark, growl or lunge at street dogs are afraid, frustrated, or guarding their patch, and the lead stops them moving away. Keep enough distance that your dog stays calm, walk at quieter times, and reward it for looking at the other dogs calmly. Punishment, choke chains and shock collars make the fear and the aggression worse.
If the reaction started suddenly or your dog seems sore, see your vet first, because pain is a common cause of aggression. If your dog has bitten, or fights break out, get help from your vet and a qualified behaviour professional. Never harm the community dogs: they are protected by law and will stay in your area.
Why does my dog react to street dogs?
It is rarely about dominance. Fear is the most common reason, and the lead makes it worse.
The Merck Veterinary Manual says fear is the most common motivation for aggression in dogs, and that aggression is used to increase the distance between the dog and what frightens it. Aggression towards unfamiliar dogs, it adds, is likely motivated by fear, resource guarding, frustration or territoriality. A fearful dog on a lead cannot escape, so it tries to make the other dog leave instead, by barking and lunging.
Community dogs add their own pressure. Each group holds a territory, and they bark at, follow or rush a strange dog walking through it. A pet dog that has been chased or bitten once may start reacting long before the street dogs come near. The RSPCA says dogs with bad past experiences may feel threatened by other dogs, and that a dog uses aggression almost always because it thinks it is under some form of threat.
Pain matters too. Merck calls pain an important risk factor for behaviour problems, and the ASPCA says an otherwise gentle dog can behave aggressively when in pain. A sudden change in how your dog reacts is a reason to see your vet.
What should you do if street dogs approach on a walk?
Stay calm and create space. Your aim is to leave, not to win.
If Street dogs start barking from a distance
Turn and walk calmly the other way, or cross the road. Reward your dog with a treat as you move off. Merck Veterinary Manual
If A dog comes close and stiffens
Stop and stand still rather than rushing towards or away from it, and put a solid object such as a parked car or gate between you if you can. RSPCA (England and Wales)
If Your dog is lunging and cannot hear you
You are too close. Move away first; training only works when your dog can still take food. Merck Veterinary Manual
If A fight breaks out
Do not put your hands between the dogs. Once they are apart, take your dog to the vet even for a small bite: VCA vets say bite wounds treated within six hours heal best. VCA Animal Hospitals
If You were bitten or scratched while separating them
Wash the wound with soap and running water and see a doctor or a government anti-rabies clinic the same day. The doctor decides what treatment you need. National Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
How do you walk a reactive dog in an Indian neighbourhood?
Plan the walk around the dogs you know you will meet.
- Walk where and when you are less likely to meet dogs that frighten yours. Merck gives this as the main safety tool for dogs that react on the lead. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Learn the territories on your route: which lanes, gates and tea stalls have resident groups, and go round them. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Use a well-fitted harness or a head halter introduced with rewards. Merck says head halters can help a dog change focus and settle. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Carry high-value treats such as small pieces of boiled chicken, and feed as soon as your dog notices another dog at a distance it can cope with. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Teach a basket muzzle with rewards if contact cannot always be avoided. Merck says it is useful where triggers cannot be avoided, though it does not treat the fear. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Do not let your dog greet street dogs or other pets while it is reactive, and never force it close to get used to them. Merck says flooding is not recommended. Merck Veterinary Manual
- Never use a choke chain, prong or shock collar, or jerk the lead. AVSAB lists all of these as tools and techniques an appropriate trainer avoids. American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior

Questions owners ask
Is my dog aggressive or just scared of street dogs?
- Often both. Merck says fear is the most common motivation for aggression in dogs, used to increase distance from what frightens them. A dog that lunges on the lead but avoids street dogs when free is usually fearful. Watch for early signs such as a lowered body, lip licking or turning away, and move off before the outburst.
Should I carry a stick to keep street dogs away?
- Use it only as a barrier, never to hit. Hurting a community dog is cruelty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and waving a stick can make dogs more defensive. The RSPCA advises standing still and putting a solid object between you and a threatening dog, then walking away slowly.
Can I socialise my adult dog with street dogs?
- Not by forcing meetings. Merck says flooding, or exposing a dog to its fear at full intensity, is not recommended because it can cause severe distress. Work at a distance where your dog stays calm, pair the sight of other dogs with treats, and close the gap only as it relaxes.
Will neutering stop my dog fighting with street dogs?
- It may help some dogs, but it is not a cure for fear. Ask your vet whether neutering suits your dog. Most reactivity towards street dogs comes from fear, frustration or territory, which need distance, management and reward-based training. A vet check also rules out pain, a common cause of aggression.
Can I ask the corporation to remove street dogs from my lane?
- Not to relocate them. Under the ABC Rules, 2023, community dogs are sterilised, vaccinated and returned to the same locality. You can ask the corporation's ABC programme to sterilise and vaccinate unsterilised dogs, and report a dog that seems rabid or sick.
