Where can I get my pet cremated in my city?

Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

Several Indian cities have animal crematoriums, run by the municipal corporation or an animal welfare charity: Mumbai (Mahalaxmi and Malad), Pune (Naidu Hospital), Bengaluru (Sumanahalli), Hyderabad (Nagole), Chennai (Blue Cross of India) and a centre in Delhi. Call before you go: timings, papers and closures change, and your vet usually knows the current arrangement.

Ask whether the ashes come back to you, which papers you need (Mumbai asks for a vet's death certificate and, for a dog, its licence), and whether they collect. Petym does not list fees, because few corporations publish them and reported ones change.

From news reports, not yet an official source.

What news reports say, city by city, with the date of each report. Few corporations publish a page of their own.

How does Mumbai's municipal cremation booking work?

BMC is the one corporation we found with its own published terms for cremation.

BMC's Veterinary Health Department page carries the rules and conditions for cremation booking, with booking by mobile number and a one-time password. For a dead stray animal it asks for a death certificate from a municipal or private dog sterilisation centre's vet. For a pet dog, a municipal licence is required. The person bringing the animal needs one photo ID and one address proof, and an Animal Welfare Board of India caregiver ID card is accepted for strays.

The page does not say where cremation takes place, the hours or whether there is a charge, so call the department's free helpline, +91-7564976649, which the page lists, before you go. If your dog is not licensed, ask what they need in its place.

What should you ask before you take your pet?

One phone call saves a wasted trip across the city with your pet's body.

  • Is the crematorium open today? Facilities close for maintenance, and in July 2025 Mumbai's Deonar crematorium was still being built. The Week (PTI)news report
  • Which papers do you need: a vet's death certificate, the dog licence, your ID and address proof? BMC Veterinary Health Department
  • Will the ashes come back to you, and how long will it take? DT Nextnews report
  • Is it an individual cremation, with only your pet's ashes, or communal, where ashes are not returned? PDSA
  • Can the family be present, and is there a space for a prayer or last rites? DT Nextnews report
  • Does it take your kind of pet? Some facilities are described as for dogs, or for dogs and cats, or for small animals only. The South Firstnews report
  • What is the charge, and does it differ for a pet and a community animal? Ask, because few corporations publish it. Punekar Newsnews report

What kinds of pet cremation are there?

The terms PDSA uses. Indian facilities may not offer all three, so ask.

  • Ashes returned

    Individual cremation

Your pet is cremated on its own and the ashes are returned to you, sometimes in a casket. PDSA

  • No ashes back

    Communal cremation

Several pets are cremated together, so ashes cannot be returned. Often the lower-cost choice. PDSA

  • Your choice of place

    Private, arranged by you

You choose the crematorium yourself; your vet can keep the body until it can be taken. PDSA

    What the sources say

You can usually take your pet yourself, after booking. Call first to check timings and papers. BMC Veterinary Health Department

What if there is no crematorium near you?

Ask your vet first: many vets keep a body and arrange cremation, and PDSA notes the vet can hold the body until a crematorium can take it. Your municipal corporation's veterinary department will know of any facility nearby, including those run by charities.

Burial on land you own is the other choice, with care. Do not bury a pet that was put to sleep in a shallow grave, because the drug stays in the body and can poison scavengers, and never bury a pet that may have had rabies.

Questions owners ask

Is there a pet crematorium in Mumbai?

Yes. In July 2025 BMC told the Bombay High Court its Mahalaxmi animal crematorium was working, a natural gas crematorium at Malad was set up in September 2023, and one at Deonar was being built. Book through BMC's Veterinary Health Department, which asks for a vet's death certificate and, for a dog, its licence.

Where can I cremate my dog in Bengaluru?

BBMP's animal crematorium is at Sumanahalli on Magadi Road, next to the human crematorium, according to a 2016 report; it had separate incinerators for small and large animals and could return the ashes. That report is old, so phone BBMP or ask your vet first.

Is there a pet crematorium in Hyderabad?

Yes. A crematorium for small animals opened in December 2022 at the animal care centre in Fathullaguda, Nagole, on land provided by GHMC and run by People for Animals. Families can take the ashes home or immerse them. Call ahead to check timings and what to bring.

How much does pet cremation cost in India?

Petym does not list fees. Few corporations publish their charges, and amounts reported in the news differ and change. Some cities cremate stray animals free, as Pune's corporation does. Ask the crematorium or your vet for the current charge when you book.

Can I get my pet's ashes back?

Usually, if the cremation is individual. Blue Cross of India in Chennai returns ashes, often within about an hour, and Hyderabad's facility lets families take them home. In a communal cremation, where several pets are cremated together, ashes cannot be returned, so ask which kind it is.
