What is a KCI registered puppy?
Updated By PetymFacts checked against official sources on
Quick answer
A KCI registered puppy is one recorded with the Kennel Club of India, a pedigree registry founded in 1896, as the pup of a registered sire and dam. The registration certificate records its breed, parents, breeder, date of birth and microchip number. It proves pedigree. It does not prove the puppy is healthy or the breeder licensed.
KCI registration is voluntary and is not a legal licence. Under the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017, anyone who breeds dogs for sale needs a separate certificate from the State Animal Welfare Board, and no pup under eight weeks may be sold. Check both, plus the vet records, before you pay.
What is the Kennel Club of India?
A private club that keeps the pedigree register for dogs in India and runs dog shows.
The Kennel Club of India (KCI) is based in Anna Nagar, Chennai. Its forms describe it as founded in 1896 and affiliated to The Kennel Club, London, in 1900, and its transfer form says it has been affiliated to the FCI, the international federation of kennel clubs, since 1964. Owners who register dogs with it agree to its rules and accept its committee as the governing body for canine affairs, including disputes about registration, breeding and sale.
KCI is not a government body. Registering a puppy with it is a choice, usually made by breeders who want to show dogs or breed pedigree litters. When its website was checked on 21 October 2026 it showed a notice that a new website was being deployed, with contact details and downloadable forms only.
What do the words on KCI papers mean?
Taken from the KCI registration and transfer forms.
- Litter registration
- The breeder registers all the live puppies of one litter at the same time, after 30 days of birth and within 180 days. Both the sire and dam must be KCI registered, and the breeder must be recorded as the owner of the dam. The Kennel Club of India
- Breeder
- The person who owns the dam when she gives birth, unless the club has recorded a loan of the bitch for breeding. The Kennel Club of India
- Registered name
- A formal name, up to 24 letters excluding a prefix, chosen by the breeder. It is not the puppy's house name. The Kennel Club of India
- Prefix or affix
- A kennel name registered by a breeder for life. Pups registered with a breeder's prefix cannot have their registered name changed. The Kennel Club of India
- KCI number and microchip number
- The forms record the KCI numbers of the sire and dam and a chip number for each, and the single-dog form asks for the dog's own microchip number. The Kennel Club of India
- Bred in India or imported
- A pup conceived abroad and born in India is treated as imported. An imported dog is registered with its foreign certified pedigree. The Kennel Club of India
- Transfer of ownership
- When a registered dog is sold, the new owner sends the transfer form, signed by both owners, with the original registration certificate. Until the transfer is recorded, the dog cannot be shown in the new owner's name. The Kennel Club of India

If The seller offers papers for an extra charge
Ask why. Litter registration is done by the breeder for the whole litter at one time; the papers should match the pup and its parents. The Kennel Club of India
How much does KCI registration cost?
KCI's forms list its fees, and the litter form shows that the fee per pup rises the longer the breeder waits after the birth, with separate rates for German Shepherds and for Indian breeds. Registering or transferring a dog also requires a subscription to the Indian Kennel Gazette. Because the club was rebuilding its website when we checked, confirm the current tariff with KCI directly rather than relying on figures quoted by sellers.

Questions owners ask
Is KCI registration compulsory in India?
- No. KCI is a private pedigree club, not a government licence. What the law requires of breeders is a certificate of registration from the State Animal Welfare Board under the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017, and some cities require a pet dog licence from the owner.
How do I check KCI papers are genuine?
- Check that the breed, date of birth, sire, dam and microchip number on the certificate match the pup, scan the microchip at your vet, and contact the Kennel Club of India in Chennai with the registration number if you are unsure. Its enquiry desk and email are on its website.
Can I register my dog with KCI later?
- KCI has a single-dog registration form, and it needs the parents' KCI numbers and a signed declaration. Litters must be registered by the breeder within 180 days of birth. If the parents were not registered, the dog normally cannot be registered as a pedigree.
Does a KCI certificate mean the puppy is vaccinated?
- No. The certificate records pedigree and ownership. Vaccination is shown by the vaccination card signed by a vet. The 2017 Rules require breeders to sell only healthy pups that have had their inoculations, so ask for the card with every puppy.
What is the difference between KCI and a breeder licence?
- KCI registration is a pedigree record kept by a private club. A breeder licence is the legal certificate from the State Animal Welfare Board under the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017, needed by anyone who breeds dogs for sale. A good breeder can show both.
